SSI has today released ShipConstructor 2015 R2.1 software. The software release comes in response to emerging ship design, engineering and building trends as identified by SSI’s Client Council of industry leaders. The advisors on this software launch were representatives from U.S. and Canadian companies: Genoa Design, Glosten & Associates, Gunderson Marine and Trinity Marine Products. This group has similar production methods and/or design approaches. A different set of advisors from Europe provided input into the previous Client Council release last year.

Trinity Marine Products, Inc., a subsidiary of Trinity Industries, Inc. Tom Faherty has been promoted to President of Trinity Marine Products, replacing Paul Mauer, now Chief Operations Officer for TrinityRail. He has held a number of positions within Trinity Marine Products. Most recently, serving as Vice President and General Manager of the tank barge product line. He brings 36 years of experience and knowledge in the marine industry to his new leadership role. Stephen Sheridan has been promoted to Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer of Trinity Marine Products. He has 37 years of industry experience in a variety of executive leadership positions. In his new role, Mr. Sheridan will focus on enhancing Trinity Marine’s commercial relationships.

Argosy Transportation Group, Inc., Bellaire, Texas, has signed a contract with Trinity Marine Products, Inc., Madisonville, La., to build the Jean-M 2501, a 250-ft by 54-ft by 12-ft inland deck barge. The vessel, designed by Bristol Harbor Group, Inc. (BHGI), will have a 3,000 pound per square foot (PSF) maximum allowable deck load, and will primarily service the inland project cargo market. Argosy has chosen BHGI’s Houston affiliate, Bristol Harbor Group South, Inc. (BHGS), to oversee construction of the barge at Trinity Marine Products, Inc.

Jensen Maritime Consultants, Inc., a Crowley company, has designed two new barges for Global Marine Transportation, Inc. Both 10,000-barrel tank barges are scheduled to be constructed and delivered in 2010. Designed for lightering services, the barges are being built by Trinity Marine Products, Inc., and will be chartered to Maxum Petroleum, Inc. The tank barges are designed with corrugated cargo tank bulkheads to ease tank stripping and cleaning. All cargo tanks are completely smooth-sided except for the deck stiffeners above.

Trinity Industries, Inc. today announced Robert P. Herre has been named Executive Vice President of Trinity Marine Products, Inc., a subsidiary of Trinity Industries, Inc. Herre is a 25-year veteran of both the marine and inland shipbuilding industries, trained and experienced in engineering, operations and general management. Most recently, Herre served as President and Chief Operating Officer of Jeffboat LLC, a subsidiary of American Commercial Lines, LLC. "I'm extremely pleased to have someone of Bob's caliber joining the company," said Paul Mauer, President of Trinity Marine. "His background and experience enhance our existing management team, providing a unique perspective from within the industry.

Trinity Marine Products has reached a settlement agreement with Florida Marine Transporters, Inc. related to 28 tank barges owned and/or operated by Florida Marine. Trinity Industries, Trinity Marine Products, and Florida Marine will each dismiss their claims filed against one another. The settlement involves a joint monitoring of the barge coatings and void compartment maintenance procedures, and a mutual release of all claims against one another according to the parties’ representatives. A spokesman for Trinity Industries indicated the settlement would not result in a charge to first quarter earnings because amounts involved were well within the range of amounts previously reserved.

Injury and illness rates at shipyards that belong to the Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA) have declined over the past three years helping facilities to drastically their overhead costs. The average Total Recordable Incident Rates (TRIR) for SCA member facilities declined from 12.94 percent in 1998 to 11.76 percent in 2001, while the average TRIR for the industry as a whole (SIC 3731) as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) was 20.2 percent in 1999 and 22 percent in 2000. SCA’s data is based on the quarterly injury and illness surveys calculated by the Council. SCA has an active safety committee that reviews the results of each quarterly survey and holds bi-annual safety seminars to address the areas where most injuries occur.

Friede Goldman Halter (FGH) has signed nine contracts with a combined value of more than $52 million, excluding options. The contracts are outlined as follows: Halter has agreed with Foss Maritime for the construction of a 98-ft. (29.8 m) harbor tug, with options to build two additional vessels; a contract was also signed with an undisclosed foreign operator for construction of two high-speed passenger ferries, with options for two additional vessels; Sea Coast Towing has contracted Halter to build an 80,000-barrel oceangoing double-hull tank barge, with an option for an additional vessel; Trinity Yachts has agreed with Halter for hull construction of a 192-ft.

Trinity Marine Products has reached a long-term agreement to provide barges to Ingram Barge Company, the leading carrier on America's inland waterways. The contract calls for the construction of dry cargo units for a number of years. The terms were not disclosed except that the agreement protects Trinity with cost escalation coverage.

Florida Marine Transporters has added tank barge FMT 3008 to its fleet. The barge, the second of several being built by Trinity Marine Products, Inc., reflects an ongoing commitment by Florida Marine to shift to double-skin tank barge equipment. "Double-skin" tank barges, designed with an interior cargo shell and a secondary exterior hull, are primarily used for transport of petrochemical products over the nation's waterways. The hull configuration is designed to reduce cargo spills resulting from collisions, which rupture the barge hull. OPA 90 mandates all tank barges be "double-hulled" by the year 2015. Florida Marine has responded by moving well ahead of the mandated date, to make these barges available.
