Blue Denmark in Need of New Competences
New technological developments and increasing competition from other countries may change future requirements for the education and competences demanded from Blue Denmark. This is shown in a new longitudinal study. Today, the Danish Maritime Authority – in cooperation with the Danish Agency for Higher Education – publishes a longitudinal study on the availability of qualified labour in Blue Denmark. In general, the report, which is sponsored by the Danish Maritime Fund, points to the fact that the maritime training programmes are expected to be able to meet the needs of the maritime industries as they look at the moment. Blue Denmark is faced with changes, including new technology, larger vessels, etc., which may change the need for education and competences in the future.
Danish Maritime Authority to Study Unmanned Shipping
Many believe that masterless ships may become reality within a very short period of time. Surely, the technology for unmanned ships is coming, yet it remains unknown exactly where, when and to what extent. Now, the Danish Maritime Authority (DMA), together with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), is seeking the answers for these unknowns by launching a prestudy on autonomous ships. DMA said the purpose of its cooperation with the DTU is, firstly, to increase the common knowledge base and to set the preliminary frames so that the development and use of unmanned ships can come about in an appropriate manner. Danish Business Minister to Meet with Shipping Leaders
With his participation in the Danish Maritime Forum on October 26 the Danish Minister for Business and Growth will highlight the need for greater global cooperation when meeting with maritime key leaders from around the world. Around 90 percent of world trade is transported by sea. Therefore, initiatives to increase global trade and new technological opportunities will be high on the agenda when global leaders from all parts of the maritime industry meet at the Danish Maritime Forum on October26-27.
Denmark Adopts Digital Ship Certification
As of June 24, 2016, ships flying the Danish flag are being digitally certified, making Denmark one of the first countries to put an end to the 100-year-old tradition of certifying ships with paper certificates. Until now, ship certification typically involved printing, stamping and signing paper certificates, and subsequently sending them around the world to be kept on board ships. The Danish-South Korean Green Growth Alliance met for roundtable talks yesterday. The Minister for Business and Growth's meeting with the South Korean Minister of Oceans and Fisheries is important for further developing the close co-operation. The Green Growth Alliance held its fifth meeting yesterday. This time it had the form of roundtable talks with a maritime focus at the premises of the Danish Maritime Authority. South Korea is the third-largest export market for Denmark in Asia and an important market for Danish shipping. South Korea is also of major importance to Danish suppliers of marine equipment, several of which have their production, service centres or sales offices in South Korea. The Growth Alliance was launched in 2011 as a cooperation between Denmark and South Korea.

The second Annual Danish Maritime Forum, scheduled for October 7-8, 2015, in Copenhagen, brings together a wealth of global maritime leaders to address present and long-term challenges for industry. Discussions at this year’s Danish Maritime Forum are influenced by volatility in global markets and uncertainties about future growth and will focus on how the maritime industry can address these challenges in both the short and long term.
