Tallink to Repair Silja Europa at Turku Yard

Estonian shipping company Tallink Grupp said that its vessel Silja Europa has set sail to Turku Repair Yard in Naantali, Finland for scheduled maintenance and planned renewal works that would make the ship more environmentally friendly.The 1993-built vessel will stay in Turku Repair Yard for two weeks, returning to the Tallinn-Helsinki route on February 9, said a press note from the provider of mini-cruise and passenger transport services in the northern Baltic Sea region.During the scheduled docking, the vessel will undergo considerable renovation of several key passenger areas. Turku Completes Ship Recycling Project

The Ship Recycling project at the Turku Repair Yard in Naantali in Finland has been completed.In the three-year project, funded by Tekes, six vessels were dismantled and recycled on an experimental basis. The background of the project is the EU Ship Recycling Regulation, which states that after 2018, EU-flagged or European-owned vessels can only be recycled on shipyards approved for that purpose.In the past, majority of the world’s fleet has ended up being scrapped in Asia under conditions that do not meet European safety and environmental standards. Kosonen Named Managing Director of Turku Repair Yard

Oskari Kosonen has been named managing director of Turku Repair Yard, a Finnish ship repair arm of the Estonia-based BLRT Grupp.Kosonen joined Turku Repair Yard in November 2007. Before that, he held positions at a design and engineering company as well as at a shipyard, where he mainly managed naval projects. Kososnen graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from Turku University of Applied Sciences.

Life Extension for World’s Oldest Icebreaker

A comprehensive dry docking and life extension plan has been set out for the 62-year-old Finnish icebreaker Voima, continuing its run as the world’s oldest operational icebreaker. Commissioned in 1954, Voima is part of Arctia’s icebreaker fleet and has demonstrated its reliability in the Baltic Sea over the decades, serving as model for many four-propeller icebreakers built after it. Harnessing the Wind for Auxiliary Propulsion

Finnish marine engineering company Norsepower Oy Ltd. announced that it will bring to the commercial maritime market an auxiliary wind propulsion solution aimed at maximizing cargo ship fuel efficiency, with first sea tests on a Finnish cargo ship slated to begin later this year. Tallink Cruise Ship Receives Maintenance at BLRT Yard

The maintenance of passenger ferry Victoria I at Finland’s largest ship repair yard, a part of BLRT Grupp, has been finished. Scheduled maintenance of Victoria I was carried out within six days at Turku Repair Yard’s dry dock. “The success of such projects, when quality maintenance has to be executed within shortest possible time, is ensured by smooth cooperation of BLRT Grupp and ship owner teams and partners. We are proud that our experience gives Tallink Grupp the confidence to place repair works with us,” said Vesa Marttinen, the Managing Director of Turku Repair Yard.

RoRo into Turku with Grounding Damage

The 13,145 grt Finnish owned ro-ro Global Freighter has drydocked for grounding damage inspection at Finland’s Turku Repair Yard in Naantali. The ro-ro grounded near Nauvo in the Turku Archipelago while on a charter to Sea Wind Line for a voyage between Turku, Finland and Stockholm, Sweden. The 1977-built vessel has been seriously holed below the waterline. It is not known yet weather permanent repairs will take place in Naantali or that the vessel will be towed to a cheaper repair location. The ro-ro is owned by Lillbaka Oy.

Aker Yards Signs Contract with Birka

Aker Yards Lifecycle Services and Birka Line have signed a contract for the refurbishment of the spa area on board the Birka Paradise. The contract is worth approximately $2.7m. The refurbishment is scheduled for completion in January 2008. The scope of work onboard the cruise ship Birka Paradise includes the extension and refurbishment of the spa area (treatment rooms, saunas, showers and other spa facilities). This is the fourth spa refurbishment contract won by Aker Yards in the last few years. The cruise ship will be drydocked at Turku Repair Yard. The Birka Paradise was delivered in 2004 from Aker Yards, Rauma.

Aker Yards Signs Refurb Contract

Aker Yards and Silja Oy Ab have signed a contract for modernizing the two passenger-car ferries Silja Serenade and Silja Symphony. The refurbishment includes renewing the vessels passenger areas to conform to the demands of the future The project will be managed by Aker Finnyards Lifecycle services, which offers comprehensive and cost efficient services to cruise and passenger ship operators. The refurbishment will be carried out in cooperation with partners. The Turku Repair yard offers facilities, and the project means work for several turnkey contractors.
