Keel Laid for Finnish Border Guard’s New Patrol Vessel

The Finnish Border Guard has held a keel laying ceremony for its new patrol vessel at Baltic Operator's shipyard in Gdansk.On March 12, 2024, a keel laying ceremony was arranged at Baltic Operator’s shipyard in Gdansk. The ceremony took place in the presence of the representatives of the Finnish Border Guard, Meyer Turku, Baltic Operator and Bureau Veritas.The keel laying ceremony is an old tradition. ABB to Power Finland's Two New Patrol Vessels

ABB announced it has secured a contract with Finnish shipbuilder Meyer Turku to supply an integrated power and propulsion package comprising two Azipod propulsion units and the Onboard DC Grid power system for two new, advanced multi-purpose patrol vessels of the Finnish Border Guard.Due for delivery in 2025 and 2026, the 98-meter ships will replace the outgoing Tursas and Uisko patrol vessels. Alongside the existing Turva, they will guard Finland’s borders, performing maritime rescue operations and helping mitigate environmental impacts.

Finnish Patrol Boat to Test Bio LNG Fuel

The Finnish Border Guard is testing bio liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel for a coastguard patrol vessel in an effort to lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, thereby lessening the impact on global warming.The 96 meter long vessel Turva is fitted with Wärtsilä dual-fuel engines and has been supported with a Wärtsilä maintenance agreement since its launch in 2014. The Bio LNG fuel is supplied by Gasum, a Finnish state-owned biogas refiner. Bio LNG is a 100%  renewable fuel that can reduce CO2 emissions over its lifecycle by up to 90% compared to conventional fuel.

Finnish Minelayer Undergoes Midlife Refit

Minelayer vessel Pansio has been fully refitted and handed over to the Finnish Navy, following a midlife upgrade carried out by ATLAS ELEKTRONIK Finland Oy (AEFI ) together with Uki Workboat Oy (Uudenkaupungin Työvene Oy) as a subcontractor. Pansio is the first of three Pansio-class minelayers, including Porkkala and Pyhäranta, to undergo refit which aims to extend the use of the ships well into the 2030s. The machinery, satellite communications and light weapons systems required for the minelayers were purchased from abroad since there is no Finnish manufacturer.

Vikoma and Mobimar Supply Oil Spill Response Equipment for Finnish Border Guard

OPV Turva, the Finnish Border Guard's new 314 foot (95.9 meter) offshore patrol vessel, will be outfitted for oil spill response just seven months after its launch. UK-based Vikoma International Ltd and Mobimar Ltd of Finland will provide the vessel with oil spill response equipment, including 800m of Vikoma oil containment boom, four Vikoma boom reels, and Mobimar's in-hull integrated recovery system, along with other oil recovery systems. The equipment will provide a recovery capacity of over 1000m3.

On Friday May 9, 2014, STX Finland Oy’s Rauma Shipyard handed over a next-generation offshore patrol vessel to the Finnish Border Guard. The vessel was christened Turva by her godmother, Minister of the Interior Päivi Räsänen, in the christening and float-out ceremony held on August 2, 2013. STX Finland’s Rauma Shipyard Launches OPV

The offshore patrol vessel UVL10, currently being built for the Finnish Border Guard at STX Finland Oy’s Rauma shipyard, was named Turva at a festive naming and launching ceremony on Friday 2 August. Minister of the Interior Päivi Räsänen acted as godmother for the ship, wishing the vessel and its crew luck and success in their future maritime operations.
