GE Acquires Panametrics
GE Power Systems announced that it has acquired Panametrics Inc., a global leader in high-technology ultrasonic testing equipment and process control instrumentation. The company will become part of GE's Energy Management Services business and will be known as GE Panametrics. Panametrics develops highly specialized, harsh-environment sensors and instruments for nondestructive testing, solar radiation detection and process measurement instrumentation. The company's products include process control instruments; moisture, chemical and gas sensors; multi-phase flow meters; charged particle detectors; ultrasonic transducers and scanning systems for a wide range of applications.

DNV GL Launches Project to Test Biodegradable Lubricants
Classification society DNV GL has launched a new joint development project (JDP) in cooperation with marine insurers The Swedish Club, Norwegian Hull Club, Gard and Skuld to test the potential influence of Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs) on failures in stern tube bearings. DNV GL will oversee detailed laboratory testing of EALs by Leonardo Testing Services Ltd. at the University of Sheffield (UoS), UK. The JDP has been prompted by an increase in stern tube bearing failures over the last few years.

The Model AST 4530 Liquid Level Transmitter from American Sensor Technologies, Inc. (AST) is designed to measure the level of harsh liquids such as slurries, salt water and oil in vented tanks or containers. Constructed with PVDF material and a PTFE diaphragm, the AST 4530 submersible pressure sensor features a submersible PVDF cable, cord grip and housing as well as a conduit connection for turbulent installations such as process plants, salt water holding tanks, on-board ships, turbulent tanks and rail cars.
Airmar Acquires Marport Commercial Fishing Division
Airmar Technology Corporation, a company that designs, engineers and manufactures ultrasonic transducers and sensor technology, announced that it has acquired substantially all of the assets of Marport Deep Sea Technologies’ Commercial Fishing division, a leading developer of advanced sonar technology. Airmar will also acquire the Marport name and the web domain as a part of the transaction. The terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed. DNV GL Initiative For Acceptance Of Ultrasonic Flow Meters For Wet Gas
DNV GL has initiated a joint industry project (JIP) to promote the use of multi-phase ultrasonic flow meters for wet-gas applications. Seven industry partners have committed to the JIP, but it is open for more partners. Currently, multi-phase flow meters and wet-gas flow meters are used for both topside and subsea measurements, enabling operators to improve reservoir modeling and management, optimize production, and manage flow assurance. The output of wet-gas flow meters is also used to determine sales allocation between E&P companies and the royalties payable to the host government.
Sonardyne Launches Leak Detection Sonar
Sonardyne International has announced the launch of an Automatic Leak Detection Sonar (ALDS) at the Oceanology International Exhibition and Conference in London. The Sonardyne product is an active sonar capable of detecting and localizing deep water hydrocarbon leaks around offshore installations and pipelines soon after they develop, allowing operators to respond immediately and accurately in the case of a leak.ALDS is designed to detect oil and gas leaks at significant ranges, allowing coverage of wide areas from a single sensor. Typically, in deep water, the system will detect gas leaks of 1bpd (barrel per day) at a range of 500m and live oil leaks of 10bpd at the same range.
Tracerline Marksman Ulltrasonic Tool
Tracer Products has introduced the Tracerline Marksman ulltrasonic diagnostic tool, an instrument that converts and amplifies inaudible ultrasonic sound into audible “natural” sound. The Marksman uses a two-tiered process to ensure accurate diagnosis. First, the receiver unit converts inaudible sound into audible sound using a process known as heterodyning. Then, the receiver’s Sound Signal Technology fine-tunes the audible sound into the natural sound emitted by the defect itself.

Fuel Efficiency, Reduced Emissions for Maritime
Ferries and ocean going vessels can now sail more efficiently, save fuel, and reduce their CO2 emissions by using the Automated Draft Indicator System (ADIS). Weir-Jones Engineering Ltd. has recently released the third generation of this innovative marine technology. ADIS defines the position of the static water plane relative to the vessel. In this way, the position of any part of the ship relative to the water plane can be accurately determined. Based on these measurements, the position and orientation of the vessel including the draught, freeboard, heel and trim are precisely established. The calculations are carried out in real-time and these parameters are continuously updated and displayed.
GEA BallastMaster Is Awarded IMO Approval
A new solution of GEA Westfalia Separator Group for the treatment of ballast water with the aid of ultraviolet radiation, the BallastMaster ultraV, was certified in accordance with IMO guidelines and regulations. The BallastMaster ultraV ballast water management system is a mechanical/physical system solution for treating ballast water, including that with a high concentration of organisms and sedimentary particles. The two-stage system works with mechanical pre-filtration and subsequent disinfecting of the ballast water by UV-C and ultrasonic radiation without the use or generation of chemicals. In the first stage, an upstream mechanical filtration system removes all organisms and sedimentary particles larger than 20 microns.

Drone Wars: French Navy Examines Cutting-edge Tech
Defense technology company Naval Group and helicopter manufacturer Airbus Helicopters will together lead an effort to develop warship based aerial drones for the French Navy. The French companies were recently contracted by the French Directorate General of Armaments (DGA) to perform a “de-risking” study ahead of future construction of tactical helicopter drones. The demonstration project will eventually lead to trials of the drone launch system, mission system and airborne rotary-wing vehicle, conducted from a French Navy vessel.
