Polymer Serves an Array of Workboat Applications

(Image: Vesconite)

Workboats are built for a diverse range of purposes, but they all share the need for trouble-free bushings and bearings. Answering this call, Vesconite offers a line of low-friction, long-lived polymers that it says thrive in a dirty, marine environment. The company's flagship product, Vesconite is a self-lubricating, low-wear material able to carry high loads at slow speeds. It doesn't swell in water or need to be greased, and offers up to 10 times the usable life of bronze, the manufacturer claims. The polymer is suited for rudder necks and pintles.

Pneumatic Chainsaw Designed for Underwater Use

CS Unitec 5 1028 Chainsaw

CS Unitec introduces a series of pneumatic chainsaws suited for use in underwater applications or in wet, hazardous environments. Series 5 1028 air saws are designed with a chain brake to stop chain movement during kickback or repositioning of the saw during cutting. These air saws feature two separate lubricating systems that automatically oil the saw chain and motor for easy startup and low-maintenance operation. Safer than gas or electric in hazardous atmospheres, these saws are suitable for use in hot work areas, Ex zones or hazardous environments.

ROV Cable Solution for Deep Ocean Research

Nexans, a worldwide expert in the cable industry, is at Oceanology 2012 to promote its wide range of cable solutions developed to meet the specific needs of workclass ROV manufacturers and operators. Nexans’ specialized ROV cable manufacturing facility in Norway can produce steel armoured umbilicals for vehicles commonly used for trenching, ploughing, maintenance and drill support applications. The cables are typically designed with a two or three layer torque balanced armouring and 3 phase power supply, instrumentation and fibre optics. The typical depth rating is 2000 to 4000 metres. Deep water umbilicals are designed…

Increasing the Life Expectancy of Marine Equipment

Alan Robinson, managing director of Arc Energy Resources, discusses the benefits of weld overlay cladding to protect marine equipment and components from corrosion; and reviews the options available using corrosion resistant alloys. Paints and coatings are readily available to protect surfaces of a ship’s superstructure from saltwater in the atmosphere, but how can marine engineers ensure the long-term integrity of mechanical components and equipment such as pumps, valves and piping against aggressive corrosion caused by the sea itself, either below the surface or in areas subjected to significant amounts of  saltwater spray. In order to maintain the efficient and reliable operation of marine equipment…
