Germany's LNG Import Terminals Tackle Challenges

A German government-backed liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal project at Mukran on Ruegen island in the Baltic Sea, near existing LNG reception facilities delivering into the mainland port of Lubmin, will be downsized. The quest for alternative imports intensified as the country sought to end reliance on Russian pipeline gas after Russia invaded Ukraine last year.Apart from gas, industry and the government are anticipating increased use of hydrogen, which when produced using renewable energy can help the transition to a lower carbon economy.Germany would need to import much of its hydrogen needs and the low density of the gas makes transportation over long distances complicated unless a carrier…

German Green Group Seeks to Cut Wilhelmshaven FSRU License by 10 Years

A German environmental group has lodged a complaint calling for the operating licence of a new floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal at Wilhelmshaven to be shortened by a decade citing its discharging of chlorine and risks to Germany's climate targets.Germany plans to use so-called Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRUs) to import LNG as it weans itself off of piped Russian gas. The group, Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH), said in a complaint to the commercial regulator in the state of Lower Saxony that the licence for the unit at Wilhelmshaven should end in 2032, not 2042.

Höegh Esperanza, FSRU for Germany's First LNG Terminal Reaches Wilhelmshaven

The Höegh Esperanza floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), for Germany's first LNG terminal, has arrived in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, Uniper has informed."The arrival of the FSRU marks an important milestone shortly before the opening of Germany's first LNG terminal on December 17, 2022," Uniper said. The FSRU was previously loaded with around 165,000m³ of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in Spain - enough to supply around 50,000 - 80,000 German households for a year. While it did bring the LNG, from now on, Höegh Esperanza will no longer bring the LNG to Wilhelmshaven itself. Its task is to regasify LNG delivered by other LNG carriers and to feed at least five bcm of natural gas into the German gas grid each year.

Uniper CFO: Nord Stream 2 Completion Not Cure-all for Gas Market Woes

On September 10, 2021, the sections of the second Nord Stream 2 pipeline laid from the German shore and Danish waters was connected in a so-called above water tie-in. The opposing pipe strings were lifted from the seabed by the lay barge Fortuna and the pipe ends were cut and fitted together. The welding to connect the two lines took place on a platform located above the water on the side of the vessel. Then the connected pipeline was lowered to the seabed as one continuous string.©NordStream2

The completion of the controversial Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline to bring more Russian gas into Germany under the Baltic Sea would go some way to relieving the tight gas market this winter, but there were other factors at play, the chief finance officer of utility Uniper said."Clearly it (Nord Stream 2) would help but the situation is more complex," CFO Tiina Tuomela said in an earnings call with analysts on Friday, adding weather factors and the level of arrivals of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in Europe were also important.Certification of the pipeline…
