UECC Trials Biofuels

Ship operator United European Car Carriers (UECC) has bunkered sustainable biofuel for the first time in collaboration with GoodFuels and vessel owner NYK.GoodFuels delivered the B30 blend, 470 tonnes of VLSFO and sustainable biofuel, to time-chartered Emerald Leader in the port of Vlissingen in May. Steel Cut for UECC Hybrid PCTC

Norway-based provider of shortsea RoRo transportation United European Car Carriers (UECC)  held a steel cutting ceremony for its first newbuild pure car truck carrier (PCTC) on order with China Ship Building Trading and Jiangnan Shipyard Group.Representatives from UECC, NYK, Japan Marine Science, MUFG Bank, DNV-GL, SDARI, CSSC and CSTC gathered at the Jiangnan Shipyard in in Shanghai on the 8th of January 2020 to witness and celebrate the steel cutting ceremony for UECC’s first Battery Hybrid LNG Powered PCTC.Earlier, UECC, jointly owned by Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and Wallenius Lines, has signed a contract to construct three new generation PCTC with China Ship Building Trading Co., Ltd and Jiangnan Shipyard Group Co.

UECC Orders Four New Car Carriers

United European Car Carriers (UECC) has signed a contract to construct two new generation pure car/truck carriers (PCTCs) with China Ship Building Trading Co., Ltd and Jiangnan Shipyard Group Co. Ltd.The newbuilding contract also has options for two additional vessels, and the first vessel is planned for delivery in 2021. ENGIE, Fluxys, Mitsubishi Corporation, and NYK have taken delivery of the world’s first purpose built liquefied natural gas bunkering vessel (LBV) from Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction Co. Ltd., at the Yeongdo shipyard in Busan, Korea. She will run on LNG for her maiden voyage, after a few days of loading LNG delivered by trucks at the shipyard. Zeebrugge in Belgium will be the home port of the vessel, which has been named ENGIE Zeebrugge accordingly. From there, the 5,000 m3 LNG capacity LBV will supply LNG as a marine fuel to ships operating in Northern Europe. The two LNG-fueled pure car and truck carriers (PCTC) operated by United European Car Carriers will be its first customers.

Great Ships of 2016: M/V Auto Eco

Since it started publishing in 1939, Maritime Reporter & Engineering News has recognized excellence in ship construction. United European Car Carriers (UECC), which is jointly owned by Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and Wallenius Lines, held a naming ceremony for the M/V Auto Eco, a s historic ship in that it is the first of two dual fuel LNG PCTCs with 1A Super Finnish/Swedish ice class. The world’s first dual fuel LNG PCTC M/V Auto Eco had her formal naming ceremony at the Port of Zeebrugge, Belgium on November 21, 2016.

First Dual-fuel LNG Car Carrier Christened

United European Car Carriers (UECC), daughter company of Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and Wallenius Lines, signed a contract in 2014 for the construction of two dual fuel LNG Pure Car and Truck Carriers. The first vessel, de ms AUTO ECO, left the shipyard in China in September and arrived in November in Zeebrugge. On November  21, the ms AUTO ECO was christened at the terminal of International Car Operators (ICO) in the Zeebrugge inner port. The godmother of the ship is Claire Tillekaerts, CEO of Flanders Investment & Trade.

First LNG-fueled Pure Car/Truck Carrier Named

United European Car Carriers (UECC), owned equally by NYK and Wallenius Lines, held a naming ceremony on November 21 at the Port of Zeebrugge, Belgium, for Auto Eco, the world’s first LNG-fueled pure car and truck carrier (PCTC). Auto Eco had been delivered to UECC on September 29. The ceremony was attended by Geert Bourgeois, minister-president of the government of Flanders; Claire Tillekaerts, CEO of Flanders Investment and Trade; Masafumi Ishii, Japan’s ambassador to Belgium; Takao Kusakari, NYK senior advisor; and Koichi Chikaraishi, NYK senior managing corporate officer; among others. Auto Eco is equipped with dual-fuel engines that can use either liquefied natural gas (LNG) or heavy fuel oil and marine gas oil.

Belgium Delegates Visit NYK

Geert Bourgeois, Minister-President of the government of Flanders; Claire Tillekaerts, CEO of Flanders Investment and Trade; and accompanying delegates visited the NYK head office and met with NYK board counselor Koji Miyahara, senior advisor Takao Kusakari, and senior managing corporate officer Koichi Chikaraishi. During the meeting, Kusakari, who serves as the president of the Japan-Belgium Society, offered his appreciation for the visit on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Belgium and Japan, and also 120 years since the start of NYK’s first European liner service between Yokohama and Antwerp. He also mentioned that NYK will continue to seek collaboration and cooperation with the government of Flanders through the ports of Zeebrugge and Antwerp…

World’s First LNG-fueled PCTC Delivered

United European Car Carriers (UECC), which is equally owned by NYK and Wallenius Lines, took delivery of the world’s first LNG-fueled  Pure Car and Truck Carrier  from Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. on September 29 at the NACKS shipyard in Nantong, China. The vessel  will be named “Auto Eco” when reaching North Europe towards the end of November, and it is the first of two sister vessels to be delivered. These new, unique vessels are equipped with dual-fuel engines that can use either liquefied natural gas (LNG) or heavy fuel oil and marine gas oil. These vessels will be put into service in Europe, where strict sulphur emission regulations have been introduced.

New Global Brand for LNG Bunkering: Gas4Sea

ENGIE, Mitsubishi Corporation and NYK Line have launched Gas4Sea, a new brand for their joint marketing of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel around the world. Gas4Sea aims to lead innovation through the ship-to-ship supply of LNG for the maritime sector. In 2014, ENGIE, Mitsubishi Corporation and NYK concluded a framework agreement for a partnership to develop LNG bunkering services. By combining NYK’s shipping expertise with ENGIE and Mitsubishi Corporation’s LNG supply portfolio and terminal access under the brand Gas4Sea, the partners will offer a cleaner, reliable, safe and cost-effective service to shipping customers worldwide. Through their experience in their respective businesses, they will be able to tailor their LNG supply chains to the customers’ needs.

Obituary: Christer Olsson, Stolt-Nielsen Chairman of the Board

The Board of Directors of Stolt-Nielsen Limited announced the passing of Christer Olsson, Chairman of the Board. He was 70. Mr. Olsson had served as a Director of the Company since 1993, and as Chairman of the Board since December 15, 2009, when he succeeded Jacob Stolt-Nielsen, the company's founder. The Board of Directors will elect a new chairman at the Company's Annual General Meeting in April 2016. "For more than two decades, Christer provided constructive guidance and thoughtful insights to Board discussions, helping the Company to capitalize on opportunities as well as overcome challenges," said Niels G. Order Placed for First Gas-Powered Car Carriers

Dual-fuel ME-GI engine adds important reference to growing list. United European Car Carriers (UECC) has signed a contract for the construction of two LNG-powered Pure Car/Truck Carriers (PCTCs). A single MAN B&W 8S50ME-GI dual-fuel engine will power each newbuilding. The PCTCs will be capable of operating on LNG fuel, heavy fuel oil or marine gas oil, providing greater flexibility and efficiency. They represent the first such vessels globally to be fitted with an LNG propulsion system. When in service, they will be capable of completing a fourteen-day round trip in the Baltic operating solely on LNG, including main engine and auxiliary power generation. UECC ordered the newbuildings in conjunction with a long-term fleet evaluation process concerning its Baltic fleet.

Bureau Veritas to Class First LNG Bunker Barge

International classification society Bureau Veritas has been chosen to class the unique LNG bunkering vessel which will be built at Hanjin Heavy Industries, Korea, under an agreement between Japan’s NYK and Mitsubishi and France’s GDF-SUEZ. The vessel will carry 5,000 cu m of LNG for ships’ fuel stored at 4 Bar in two IMO Type C pressure tanks. Delivery is set for 2016 when the vessel will operate from the Fluxys LNG Terminal in Zeebrugge, initially supplying LNG fuel from GDF-SUEZ to the fleet of United European Car Carriers.

Zeebrugge Orders Seagoing LNG Bunkering Vessel

On May 13, 2014 Mitsubishi Corporation, GDF SUEZ and NYK signed a framework agreement aiming to develop the LNG bunkering market worldwide, in the context of international regulations that seek to reduce the impact of shipping activities on the global environment. This partnership now resulted in two concrete contracts: a joint order of an LNG bunkering vessel, the world’s first LNG bunkering vessel with the aim of providing LNG to LNG-fueled vessels; and also an LNG bunkering contract between GDF SUEZ and United European Car Carries (UECC)…

UECC Orders Dual-Fuel Ice-classed PCTCs

United European Car Carriers (UECC), jointly owned by Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and Wallenius Lines, inform it has signed a contract to construct two triple-fuel LNG Pure Car & Truck Carriers (PCTCs). The contract has been signed with Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) and the vessels will be constructed at the NACKS shipyard in Nantong, China which is a joint venture between KHI and China Ocean Shipping (Group) Company. Deliveries of both the vessels will be in the second half of 2016.

Falmouth Docks Say Farewell to Huge RoRo

'M/V Autosky,' capable of carrying 2,080 cars & commercial vehicles leaves UK's A&P Falmouth Shipyard after repairs, overhauls, re-painting. The contract work included repairs, an overhaul of the bow thruster, removal of two Becker rudders, overhaul of trailing flaps and two Stabilizer trailing flaps, and a complete change of livery with new ship side logos. The long-term relationship between the dockyard and United European Car Carriers (UECC) highlights the importance of repeat business for A&P Falmouth. In the past 15 years UECC has docked at least one vessel per year inFalmouth.
