EU-backed Project Targets Improved Fuel Efficiency

ABS, Capital Ship Management Improve Propulsion Shaft Monitoring

ABS and Capital Ship Management Corp. (“Capital”), a distinguished ship management company, have collaborated to install an advanced condition monitoring system on the propulsion shafting of the Capital managed vessel M/T Agisilaos, a 36,700 dwt, Ice Class 1A IMO II/III Chemical/Product Tanker, built in 2006. The ABS Smart Bearing solution uses non-destructive testing sensors installed on the bearing pedestal and housing to measure and display the force exerted by the main propulsion shafting system onto the bearings, effectively converting the pedestal into a permanently installed weighing machine. “It was a pleasure working with Capital to develop the ABS Smart Bearing concept,” says ABS Chairman, President and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki.

Marine Design Conference Wraps Up in Tokyo

The 12th International Marine Design Conference (IMDC) was held in Tokyo from May 11-14, hosted by The Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers, and sponsored by The Shipbuilders' Association of Japan and ClassNK. IMDC is a global academic conference for the design of marine systems including ships. Since its inception in the U.K. in 1982, it has taken place every three years with this week’s conference marking its 12th conference. This is the second time the IMDC has been held in Japan; it took place in Kobe in 1991 for its fourth conference.

TURBOMED Opens Service Station in Shanghai

TURBOMED S.A. has established a new service station in Shanghai, China as a move to expand its presence in the worldwide marine industry. Furthermore, Yiannis Paraskevopoulos, Owner of TURBOMED S.A., decided to instate in Shanghai a Greek mechanical engineer, Nikos Paraskevopoulos, to represent the company as the authorized superintendent of all the operations concerning turbocharger service. Paraskevopoulos has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and is a specialist in turbocharger maintenance and repair.

SNAME Meeting on Financials of LNG

SNAME announced its seventh technical meeting for the 2013-2014 season, during which Dr. Panagiotis Zacharioudakis, Senior Researcher at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), will speak on the subject of “The Financials of LNG.” The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 20 at 7 p.m. in The auditorium of Maran and Alpha Tankers, Kallithea, Athens. The use of LNG as marine fuel is a very promising alternative for compliance with environmental regulations, compared to other solutions such as scrubbers and MGO. In the presentation, a brief description of the Costa Project (CO2 & ship transport emissions abatement by LNG), funded by the TEN-T, will be given.

Ferries Design Competition Ofers $5,000 Prize

Student teams from seven maritime universities have submitted proposals for the designcompetition for Safe Affordable Ferries sponsored by the Worldwide Ferry Safety Association (WFSA). A panel of six judges will review the submissions and will announce the winners by early Fall 2013. The top prize is $5,000 with second and third prizes also to be awarded.
