DNV GL Hires Bendrik as Chief Digital Transformation Officer

Klas Bendrik will join DNV GL September 1 as Chief Digital Transformation Officer to support DNV GL’s digitalization and IT strategy. Bendrik will be based at the DNV GL headquarters in Høvik, Norway and will be a member of DNV GL Group’s Executive Committee and report to Group President and CEO Remi Eriksen.“Digitalization is central to our strategy. DNV GL invests 5 percent of its revenue on research, development and innovation, and now more than 60 percent of this is dedicated to our digital transformation,” Eriksen said.

Lars Ljungström has been appointed to vice president of finance and chief financial officer (CFO) for Volvo Penta of the Americas, effective July 2017. Ljungström will provide strategic leadership over finance, planning, budgeting and reporting for North, South and Central America and the Caribbean. ROV Winch Supplied for Antarctica Expedition

Antarctica expedition benefits from a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) winch supplied by MacArtney Underwater Technology. An icebreaking polar supply and research vessel is to map out underwater conditions in the icy waters in terms of subsurface and marine life. The winch system, which was acquired through Swedish SubSea Solutions on the part of University of Gothenburg, will be put to good use on board South African icebreaking polar supply and research vessel S. A. Agulhas II designed to carry out scientific research and supply to South African research stations in Antarctica.

Johan Roos

Johan Roos is Interferry’s executive director of European Union and IMO affairs based in Brussels, Belgium. He took up the newly created regulatory affairs post in September 2011 after previously serving as director of sustainability with Sweden’s Stena Rederi AB. He holds a masters degree in environmental sciences from the University of Gothenburg. In 2000, he left classification society DNV to join ferry operator Stena Line to develop internal environmental management systems and for many years, he was in charge of sustainability issues for all of the Stena group’s shipping activities.

Enormous Plastic Bags In Unique Ocean Research

To study the effects of ocean acidification, ten huge plastic containers called mesocosms are in place in the Gullmar Fjord in Sweden. The project is unique: mesocosms of this size have never been used for such a long period of time. The experiment is part of a worldwide research project, and includes researchers from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. The mesocosms were lowered into the fjord with the help of divers from the research vessel Alkor and each one will now enclose 55,000 litres of seawater, containing organisms from the winter waters of the Gullmar Fjord.

Kongsberg Maritime Multibeam Echo Sounder Chosen for Icebreaker

Kongsberg Maritime has been awarded a $3.2m contract to provide an EM 122 1ºx 1º multibeam hydrographic echo sounder and one 3º SBP 120 sub bottom profiler to the University of Stockholm and the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. The Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation have financed the purchase together with the Swedish Research Council. The system is to be installed on the Icebreaker Oden, which is owned and managed by the Swedish Maritime Administration, Norrköping, Sweden. Oden built by Götaverken-Arendal in Gothenburg in 1987 is a 107m icebreaker vessel with 19 crewmembers and a top-speed of 15 knots. The EM 122 12 kHz multibeam echo sounder is designed to perform seabed mapping - bathymetry and seabed imagery - to full ocean depth with an unsurpassed resolution…
