AdvanFort Appoints Business Development Manager

AdvanFort appointed Dimitrios Angelopoulos, a retired Hellenic Navy submarine commander, as its new business development manager. Before coming to AdvanFort, Mr. Angelopoulos worked for Hellenic Shipyards S.A. as the project manager for the 214-type submarine contract with the Hellenic Navy. A Hellenic Naval Academy graduate, he has an Executive MBA degree from the University of Piraeus and an MBA degree from the University of Louisville. Commissioner Khouri Joins the FMC

The Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) announced that Michael A. Khouri of Louisville, Ky., has been sworn in as a Commissioner for a term to expire on June 30, 2011. Commissioner Khouri was nominated by President Barack Obama on December 3, 2009, and confirmed by the Senate on December 24, 2009. Commissioner Khouri comes to the FMC as a 35-year veteran in the maritime industry from positions held in vessel operations, legal and executive positions. He has also served on the boards of directors at the American Waterways Operators Association and the Waterways Council.

Jeffboat Safety Milestone

American Commercial Lines Inc. (NASDAQ: ACLI) (ACL) announced that on December 15, its Manufacturing Division, Jeffboat, accomplished the safety milestone of working two million hours without a lost time injury (an injury requiring time off from work) for the first time in its more than 70 years of operation. The shipyard has reached one million hours worked without a lost time injury twice in its history, most recently in June 2009. While Jeffboat has continually decreased injuries since 2004, it continues to implement new safety programs, including providing additional training to employees and conducting detailed investigations to identify root causes of injuries and implement corrective actions. Jeffboat Wins Labor Award

American Commercial Lines Inc. (NASDAQ:ACLI) announced that its manufacturing division, Jeffboat, and Teamsters Local Union No. 89 have received the 16th annual Labor-Management Award from the University of Louisville Labor-Management Center. The award, which honors an area workplace in which management and labor have demonstrated cooperative relations, was presented at the Labor-Management Center 2009 Award Banquet held on April 16. Jeffboat and the Union were praised by the Labor-Management Center for fostering a culture of open dialogue and communication at all levels of the workplace. Trinity Marine Products Announces New Executive Vice President

Trinity Industries, Inc. today announced Robert P. Herre has been named Executive Vice President of Trinity Marine Products, Inc., a subsidiary of Trinity Industries, Inc. Herre is a 25-year veteran of both the marine and inland shipbuilding industries, trained and experienced in engineering, operations and general management. Most recently, Herre served as President and Chief Operating Officer of Jeffboat LLC, a subsidiary of American Commercial Lines, LLC. ACL Announces Appointments and Promotions

American Commercial Lines Inc. has appointed Sam George to the position of vice president of environmental compliance, James L. Adams to the position of Vice President of Governmental Policy and Mario A. Muñoz to the position of Vice President, Regulatory Compliance. George brings several years of chemical and environmental compliance knowledge to the company. His most recent position was vice president of Madison Chemical Co., where he managed all environmental and regulatory compliance programs as well as environmental consulting services. He is a graduate of Hanover College and a graduate of the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law. Adams brings a background in transportation and public policy to the company.

Book Review: Tugboats of New York

"Tugboats of New York" is one of those rare constructions where everything works just about perfectly. The text is insightfully, appreciatively, and masterfully written. The illustrations are informative, handsome, and sometimes — deliberately, one gathers, given some of the credits — quite beautifully artistic. The photo captions are detailed and often lengthy, turning the book into sort of an A-V show on paper. And what paper. The stock is coated and 60-lb. heavy, bright, easy on the eyes, apparently formulated to last the next century or two. The illustrations glisten with a sheen more reminiscent of actual photographic prints than something screened into a book.

ACL Executive Appointment

American Commercial Lines Inc. announced the appointment of Rich Mitchell as Senior Vice President Corporate Strategy. Mitchell brings many years of business leadership, acquisition and strategic planning skills to the Company. He worked for more than 20 years with United Parcel Service of America, Inc. in positions of increasing responsibility, most recently as the Vice President of Corporate Strategy. He has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Louisville and a Master in Business Administration degree from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.

Shipway Appointed as President of Bath Iron Works

General Dynamics announced the appointment of John F. "Dugan" Shipway, 60, as president of Bath Iron Works, reporting to Michael W. Toner, executive vice president of General Dynamics Marine Systems group. Shipway succeeds Allan C. Cameron, 57, who has announced his retirement. Cameron had been president of Bath Iron Works since 1996. "Allan Cameron carried on the long shipbuilding tradition of 'Bath-built is best-built,'" said Nicholas D. Chabraja, General Dynamics chairman and CEO. "He recognized that great shipbuilders need modern tools. Through the development and construction of the new land-level facility, he brought Bath Iron Works into shipbuilding's 21st century," said Chabraja. "Bath Iron Works makes the best surface combatants in the world," said Cameron.
