Navy Ends Search for Man Overboard from USS Theodore Roosevelt

Australia Joins U.S. Ships in South China Sea Amid Rising Tension

An Australian frigate has joined three U.S. warships in the South China Sea near an area where a Chinese vessel is suspected to be exploring for oil, near waters also claimed by Vietnam and Malaysia, officials said on Wednesday.The warships arrived this week close to where the Chinese government survey ship Haiyang Dizhi 8 has been operating, which is in turn near where a vessel operated by Malaysia’s Petronas state oil company is conducting exploratory drilling, regional security sources have said.The U.S.

Two U.S. Warships in South China Sea Amid China-Malaysia Standoff

Two U.S. warships are operating in the South China Sea, the Navy said on Tuesday, with three regional security sources saying they were near an area of a standoff between China and Malaysia.The Haiyang Dizhi 8, a Chinese government research ship, was spotted last week conducting a survey close to an exploration vessel operated by Malaysia’s state oil company Petronas, months after it undertook a similar patrol off Vietnam.The incident prompted the United States to call on China to stop its “bullying behavior” in the disputed waters, citing concern over Beijing's provocative actions towards offshore oil and gas developments there.The U.S.

US Navy Aids Stranded Iranian Vessel

A U.S. Navy warship came to the aid of an Iranian vessel stranded in rough waters in the Arabian Sea. A helicopter crew conducting routine flight operations from Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Preble (DDG 88) spotted the dhow approximately 60 nautical miles from land. “The distressed mariners were seen waving their hands over their head in an effort to get the attention of our pilots,” said Cmdr. Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group Enters 7th Fleet

The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) and the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group (TRCSG) entered the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations (AOO) Oct. 23, to conduct maritime security operations, theater security cooperation and port visits as part of the U.S. Navy's ongoing presence in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region. Theodore Roosevelt, the flagship of Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 9, is joined by the guided-missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill (CG 52) and the guided-missile destroyers USS Halsey (DDG 97), USS Preble (DDG 88) and USS Sampson (DDG 102). "Entering 7th Fleet is an exciting opportunity to integrate with other U.S. Navy units in the AOO, as well as operate with our partners and allies in the region," said Rear Adm.

Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group Departs for Deployment

The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) departed San Diego for a regularly scheduled deployment, Oct. Theodore Roosevelt, the flagship of Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 9, will join USS Bunker Hill (CG 52), USS Halsey (DDG 97), USS Sampson (DDG 102) and USS Preble (DDG 88) for a routine deployment. The Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group deployment is an example of the U.S. Navy's routine presence in waters around the globe, displaying commitment to stability, regional cooperation and economic prosperity for all nations. "The U.S. Navy carrier strike group is the most versatile, capable force at sea," said Rear Adm. Steve Koehler, commander, CSG 9.

Theodore Roosevelt Strike Group Begins COMPTUEX

The ships of the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group (TRCSG) departed, Aug. 1, for Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX), the final work-up phase prior to deployment scheduled later this year. COMPTUEX evaluates the strike group's deployment readiness by testing command and control functions, crew safety evolutions, search and rescue operations, damage control testing and operational capabilities of a carrier strike group, ultimately certifying the TRCSG for deployment. "COMPTUEX is the ultimate test before we go forward," said Rear Adm. Steve Koehler, commander, Carrier Strike Group Nine. Teamwork and effective communication are also graded elements of the exercise.

The U.S. Navy has a balanced fleet, but it wants to grow bigger and better. Will the budget allow both? Maritime Reporter's March 2017 cover story on the U.S. Navy was all about the numbers. There exists several plans to grow the fleet beyond the current number of 308 ships, the Mitre recommendation of 414 ships, the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessment 340-ship proposal, and the Navy’s decision to grow the fleet to 355 ships, and the Trump administration’s 350. With so many numbers being bandied about, there are even more suggestions on how to get there.

This Day In Naval History - May 11

1862 - CSS Virginia is destroyed by Confederates off Craney Island to prevent capture. 1898 - During the Spanish-American War, Marines and Sailors from USS Marblehead (C 11) and USS Nashville (PG 7) cut the trans-oceanic cable near Cienfuegos, Cuba, isolating Cuba from Spain. For heroism during this action, 54 Marines and Sailors received the Medal of Honor. 1943 - In the Attu Operation, Task Force 16, commanded by Rear Adm. Thomas C. Kinkaid, landed a force of 3,000 US Army troops of the 7th Division in the cold and the mist of the Aleutians. 1945 - During the Okinawa Campaign, kamikazes crash into Task Force 58s flagship, USS Bunker Hill (CV 17). As a result, Vice Adm. Marc A. Mitscher transfers his flag to USS English (DD 696), then to USS Enterprise (CV 6) on May 14.

Two US Navy Jets Crash into The Pacific

The pilot of one of two F/A-18 Hornets that crashed Sept. 12 while operating from USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) is in fair condition and receiving medical treatment aboard the ship. Search efforts continue for the missing pilot. At the time of the incident, USS Carl Vinson was operating in the Western Pacific Ocean approximately 250 nautical miles west of Wake Island. USS Momsen and Bunker Hill Disrupt Pirate Attack

USS Momsen (DDG 92) and USS Bunker Hill (CG 52) disrupted a pirate attack on Panamanian flagged merchant vessel Duqm, Feb. 2 in the Gulf of Oman. While transiting in international waters, the merchant vessel reported that pirates were attempting to board the vessel. Momsen and Bunker Hill, which were in the vicinity, immediately responded to the Duqm's distress signal and caused two pirates skiffs alongside the vessel with ladders against its hull to flee the area. Momsen and Bunker Hill tracked the skiffs movement and located the mothership that facilitated the attempted boarding of Duqm…

New Navy Contracts

General Dynamics, National Steel and Shipbuilding Company, San Diego, Calif., is being awarded a $940,378,173 modification to previously awarded contract (N00024-02-C-2300) for two construction options (T-AKE 11 and T-AKE 12) which includes design and construction; technical manuals; special studies, analyses, and reviews; engineering and industrial services; and data and two options for Long Lead Time Material for T-AKE 13 and T-AKE 14. T-AKE is a new Combat Logistics Force Underway Replenishment Naval vessel intended to replace the current capability of the Kilauea-Class (T-AE 26) Ammunition Ship, Mars-Class (T-AFS 1) Combat Stores Ships, and when operating in concert with a Henry J. Kaiser-Class (T-AO 187) Oiler ship, the Sacramento-Class (AOE 1) Fast Combat Support Ship.

SECNAV Energy Conservation Awards Announced

The Secretary of the Navy announced the Energy Conservation (ENCON) ship award winners for FY2003. These award winners represent Navy ships who have been singled out for outstanding execution of energy conservation measures and consistent reduction in energy consumption. Energy conservation awards were also announced for Navy shore activities and Marine Corps bases. During FY 2003, Commander, Pacific Fleet (COMPAC) and Commander, Atlantic Fleet (COMLANT) ships, even during this high level operational era, avoided the consumption of many thousands of kilowatt-hours of electricity. Using energy education, the Fleet was able to reallocate over 1,160,000 barrels of fuel, to high OPTEMPO ships.

The Secretary of the Navy has presented the Energy Conservation (ENCON) Awards for FY2003 in ceremonies conducted at the Navy Memorial in Washington, DC. These award winners represent Navy ships that have been singled out for outstanding execution of innovative energy conservation measures, and consistent reduction in energy consumption. Energy conservation awards were also presented to Navy shore activities and Marine Corps bases. Using Incentivized ENCON Energy Awareness, the fleet was able to reallocate over 1,160,000 barrels of fuel, to high OPTEMPO ships. In ship operating terms, this is equivalent to 22 “ship years” of underway steaming using energy conservation initiatives provided by NAVSEA’s ENCON Team.

BAE Systems Wins $30.9M Navy Contract

BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair, San Diego, Calif., is being awarded a $30.9m cost-plus-award-fee contract for maintenance, repair and alterations for the USS Bunker Hill (CG 52) Depot Modernization Period. Work will be performed in San Diego, Calif., and is expected to be completed in February 2009. Contract funds in the amount of $21.9m will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. This contract was competitively procured and advertised via the Internet, with two proposals received. The Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington Navy Yard, D.C., is the contracting activity.

Four U.S. Ships Participate in 2007 Portland Rose Festival

The guided-missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill (CG 52) led the way as the guided-missile frigate USS Vandergrift (FFG 48), the guided-missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay (CG 53), and the guided-missile destroyer USS Howard (DDG 83) followed behind. For many young Sailors, port visits are very rare and exciting.
