Five out of the six cruise ships inspected by U.K. Maritime and Coastguard Agency surveyors in British Ports Friday have been detained over crew welfare issues.The Astoria, Astor, Colombus and Vasco de Gama at Tilbury, as well as the Marco Polo at Bristol, have all been detained after surveyors found a number of expired and invalid Seafarers Employment Agreements, late payment of wages and crews who had been on board for over 12 months. All these are in breach of the Maritime Labor Convention (MLC) and the ships have been detained for that reason.All five are from the same company – Global Cruise Lines Limited. Australia ordered two cruise ships to leave its waters on Thursday, after a liner that docked in Sydney Harbor last week became the primary source of infection in the country's coronavirus outbreak.Although well below levels elsewhere in the world, the pace of Australia's infections is starting to pick up speed, reaching nearly 2,800 cases and 13 deaths.The government of West Australia state said nobody would be permitted to disembark from the German-operated MV Artania after seven of 800 foreign passengers on board tested positive for the virus…

CMA CGM’s mega containership Vasco De Gama ran aground off the Port of Southampton on the UK’s south coast just after midnight on August 22, 2016, reported Fleetmon. The damages of the  2015-built, 17,859 teu giant vessel are being assessed. There is no news on the damage as of yet. During the accident there were no injured people and no water pollution. The ship was refloated within an hour and proceeded to the port where an underwater survey will be conducted. The local authorities reported that traffic in the area was not affected by the grounding of ultra large container ship. The investigation for the root cause of grounding is under way. The ultra large container ship was built in 2015 by Jiangnan Changxing Shipbuilding in China.

In order to improve the reliability of its service, CMA CGM has decided to review the port coverage of FAL 1. As from m/v CMA CGM JULES VERNE voy. 115 FLE, FAL 1 service will no longer call the port of Zeebrugge. Last vessel calling Zeebrugge will be m/v CMA CGM VASCO DE GAMA voy. 113FLE on August 29th, 2016. CMA CGM Group has decided to postpone its project to deploy 18,000 TEU-capacity vessels on Transpacific market trade. The much-anticipated launch of a weekly service with six mega-ships which was planned for the end of May has been delayed  in order to optimise the use of its fleet. The decision also comes as the company is rolling out an alliance with China’s Cosco Group and other rivals. French container shipping major has now signed a deal with COSCO Container Lines, Evergreen Line and Orient Overseas Container Line on creation of a new alliance, dubbed the Ocean Alliance. Analysts say CMA CGM’s new partners would not have welcomed the addition of more capacity on a route where they’re already struggling to generate profits.

CMA CGM’s six 18,000 TEU vessels named after great explorers will be deployed on the trans-Pacific market and help to accelerate its growth, the container shipping company announced today. Beginning from the end of May 2016, the CMA CGM Group will deploy its flagship fleet of six 18,000 TEU vessels between Asia and the West coast of the U.S. on the Pearl River Express service. The biggest container ship in the world, the MSC Maya, made its maiden call at Southampton on Tuesday 15 December. The 395.4m vessel, which can carry a world-leading 19,224 containers, is just the latest giant container vessel to call at the port in recent weeks. As well as being the biggest, the vessel, which is named after Maya Aponte the four-year-old daughter of MSC President and CEO Diego Aponte, uses cutting-edge technology to make it one of the greenest vessels on the sea. She is the first of the four Oscar class vessels to call at the port’s container terminal. Her visit is just another record-breaking call for SCT5, the £110m new 500m berth at the container terminal, operated by DP World Southampton and opened by Olympic sailing legend Sir Ben Ainslie in March 2014.

The world leading shipping group CMA-CGM has fitted its largest containership, the 18,000 TEU Vasco de Gama, with a 2,000 cu.m/h Bio-Sea 2000 Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) supplied by French ballast water treatment specialist Bio-UV. The Vasco de Gama is equipped with the latest environmental technologies, and the BIO-SEA2000 BWTS representing therefore one of the greenest goods transport means in the world. The Bio-Sea system uses filtration and high power UV to treat ballast water without requiring any chemicals. The U.K.-flagged Vasco de Gama has a length of 399 m and beam of 54 m. Delivered July 27 by China State Shipbuilding Corporation, it is thus largest containership ever delivered from a Chinese shipyard.

Built by China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), the 18,000 TEUs vessel is, with its 399 meters length and 54 meters width, the largest ship in the CMA CGM fleet and the largest containership ever built in a Chinese shipyard. The CMA CGM Vasco de Gama is equipped with an engine of the latest generation, a twisted leading edge rudder with bulb and an optimized hull design, together decreasing the ship’s CO2 emissions by 10 percent compared to the previous vessel generation, CMA CGM said.

Calling 11 different countries, the U.K.-flagged CMA CGM Vasco de Gama is positioned on the CMA CGM Group’s French Asia Line (FAL) joining Europe to Asia.

One of Portugal's largest warships, the Vasco de Gama Class frigate NRP Corte Real added its name to the list of ships (EUNAVFOR) operating in the Horn of Africa sea area. The new addition to the fleet will mount counter-piracy operations, with a view to protecting WFP aid shipments to Somalia. Commissioned into the Portuguese navy in 1990 the Corte Real is no stranger to the Horn of Africa, having previously worked to prevent piracy under the 'OCEAN SHIELD' NATO Operation.

Proceeding 19 months of construction time, the suction dredger Vasco de Gama - with a hold of 33,000 cu. m. — was launched at the Thyssen Nordseewerke construction yard on November 5, 1999. Owned by the Jan de Nul Group, the dredger, which is the largest in the world, will be utilized for international land reclamation projects. Krupp Fordertechnik GmbH supplied the dredging systems and components. Before being passed over to its owner during 2000, the dredger is scheduled to carry out high-performance dredging operations.
