Fourth Iranian Tanker Docks in Venezuela

The Venezuelan navy said it escorted a fourth tanker bringing Iranian fuel through its waters on Thursday, while the United States called the shipments to the gasoline-starved country a distraction from problems facing President Nicolas Maduro.The oil industries of Iran and Venezuela are both under U.S. sanctions. Iran is providing its fellow OPEC member up to 1.53 million barrels of gasoline and refining components to help ease an acute shortage, the result of the near-complete breakdown in its refining network as well as the sanctions.Washington has said it is weighing a response to the shipments.Venezuela's military has escorted each tanker through its exclusive economic zone.

Venezuela detains three vessels for suspected fuel smuggling - navy

Three vessels suspected of smuggling subsidized fuel from Venezuela's refinery-rich Paraguana peninsula were detained this week by the country's navy, a local commander said on Saturday. Sources told Reuters on Monday that seven people had been arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle diesel in a tanker owned by state oil company PDVSA. Admiral Andres Gomez, commander of a local navy unit, confirmed tanker 'Negra Hipolita' was found with an excess load of 50,000 barrels of diesel fuel at the Cardon refinery. Two additional vessels, both from Panama, were detained this week by the Venezuelan navy, also on smuggling suspicions, Gomez added. It was not immediately clear when they were apprehended. PDVSA did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Venezuelan Navy Compels Seismic Research Ship to Enter Port

The 285-ft U.S.-chartered oil exploration ship 'Teknik Perdana' seized by the Venezuelan navy in Caribbean waters disputed with neighbouring Guyana was escorted into port at Venezuela's Margarita Island on Sunday, reports AP. Quoting Venezuelan authorities, AP said the ship's 36 crew members, including five U.S. citizens and two Brazilians, would be held on board while an investigation continued. AP note that Adm. Angel Belisario Martinez told local station Union Radio that the research ship was conducting unauthorized scientific work in Venezuela's exclusive economic zone and the case had been turned over to prosecutors. Santiago Shipyard Launches Vessel

According to a report from the Cuba Standard, the Damex Shipbuilding & Engineering shipyard in Santiago — one of the few fully foreign-owned operations in Cuba — finished assembling a 600-ton multi-purpose cargo vessel that will be used by the Venezuelan navy, Prensa Latina reported. Northrop Grumman Redelivers Venezuelan Frigate

Northrop Grumman Corporation redelivered the first of two modernized Lupo-class frigates to the Venezuelan Navy on May 16. The ships, Mariscal Sucre (F-21), and Almirante Brion (F-22), arrived in Pascagoula in January 1998 to undergo extensive modernization and upgrade. F-22 will be redelivered this summer. The 2,500 DWT frigate is 372 ft. (112.8 M) long with a beam of 53 ft. (15.9 M) and a draft of 22 ft. (6.5 M). The ship's propulsion is supplied by two 35,000 HP gas turbine engines and/or two diesel engines and can power the ship to a top speed of 36 knots. With the modernization, berthing space was reduced from 182 to a crew of131.

Halter Marine has answered the call from the Venezuelan Navy for a variety of patrol boats. The company recently delivered four 80 ft. (24.3 m) boats to the country's government, which completes the contract for the design and construction of 12 total vessels in this size range. Designed for high speed operations in coastal and riverine environments, the vessels will be used for a variety of patrolling efforts in Venezuelan territorial waters, specifically to counter illegal drug traffic, provide search and rescue assistance, and disaster relief. Powered by a pair of Detroit Diesel marine engines, the vessels will have a range of 1,000 nm and a maximum speed of 25 knots. Halter also supplied the last two 54 ft. patrol boats for the Venezuelan National Guard.
