ClassNK Releases New PrimeShip-HULL Software
ClassNK has released PrimeShip-HULL (HCSR) Ver. 2.5.0 in response to the new IACS Common Structural Rules for Bulk Carriers and Oil Tankers (CSR BC & OT). CSR BC & OT, which harmonizes requirements found in both existing Common Structural Rules for bulk carriers and double hull oil tankers, was adopted by the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) Council in December 2013, partially amended in 2014, and applies to bulk carriers over 90m in length and double hull oil tankers over 150m in length contracted for construction on or after 1 July 2015.
Diana Containerships Sells Two Post-Panamax Container Vessels
Greece-based global shipping company Diana Containerships announced that it has entered into an agreement to sell the m/v March and the m/v Great, each a 2004 built containership, for an aggregate price of US$22.0 million to an unaffiliated third party. The Company expects the Vessels to be delivered to the buyer at the latest by March 30, 2018. The unaffiliated purchaser of the Vessels is the same party with which the Company entered into a previously announced agreement to sell up to seven vessels, subject to the purchaser arranging financing.

Koden’s CVS-FX Echosounder Compatible with Olex
Koden Electronics Co., Ltd. announced that its CVS-FX series echosounders (CVS-FX1, CVS-FX2 & CVS-FX2BB) are now fully compatible with the Olex 3D navigation system. Koden’s CVS-FX series is a frequency selectable digital broadband echosounder. Olex is a unique system for navigation, fishery plotting and ocean mapping, developed and manufactured by the Norwegian company Olex AS. Transas Secures First Simulator Order in Myanmar
In May 2002, Singapore-based Transas Marine Pacific received the first order to supply a multi-purpose simulation complex to Myanmar (Burma). The order came from Eastwind Shipmanagement Pte Ltd, which is setting up its own training center in Myanmar. Among the Transas simulator equipment to be installed within the next 8 weeks in the new training facilities of Eastwind, there will be the TGS 4100 Ver. 4.1 GMDSS simulator class; networked PC-based Engine Control Room simulator ERS 2000 Ver. 5.4.2 and the Transas ship handling simulator Navi-Trainer Professional 3000. The configuration of the ship handling simulator is a multi-task CBT solution comprising ARPA/radar, visualization/conning and ECDIS workstations.
Keppel Explores Sale of Jack-up Rigs to Borr Drilling
Singapore yard Keppel Corporation is considering a sale of jack-up rigs to Norwegian offshore drilling contractor Borr Drilling, reports The Business Times. The world’s biggest builder of oil rigs is seeking to offload six jack-up rigs for up to US$960 million to the Oslo-listed drilling firm headed by Tor Olav Trøim, said the report. BT also reported that Keppel Capital has already hooked up with structured finance provider Clifford Capital to potentially extend a sale-and-lease-back arrangement for at least one jack-up contracted by Grupo R.
German Waterways Strike: 150 Barges Held Up
More than 150 barges are anchored at or near locks in western Germany's river and canal systems hit by a lock workers strike, report Platts, citing the German waterway shipping lobby BDB and German shipping firm sources. The German waterway system has 435 locks, the lion's share in western Germany. The small number in eastern Germany have been excluded from the strikes because of massive recovery work from last month's catastrophic flooding there. TEN Sells, Leaseback Two Suezmax Tankers
Greece-based Tsakos Energy Navigation (TEN) has announced that it has sold for $65.2 million gross, through a five-year sale and leaseback transaction, the 2005-built Suezmax tankers Eurochampion 2004 and Euronike. The sale proceeds have been used to reduce debt and add $16.0 million of cash to TEN’s balance sheet. Rolls-Royce Mulls Sale of Commercial Marine Unit
Industrial conglomerate Rolls-Royce is considering selling the bulk of its struggling marine business as the company embarks on another restructuring which aims to further slash costs. "We are embarking on a further simplification of the business, including the evaluation of strategic options for our Commercial Marine operation and a reduction from five operating businesses to three core units based around Civil Aerospace, Defence and Power Systems," said a press release from the company.
Rolls-Royce Shares Jump as Commercial Marine Unit Sale Mulled
Britain's Rolls-Royce said on Wednesday it was considering the sale of its commercial marine business, which has been hit by weak demand in offshore oil and gas markets, as part of a restructuring of the company into three core units. Shares in the company jumped after it said the loss-making unit could be sold. They were trading up 7.2 percent at 1330 GMT. The announcement came as part of a restructuring of the aero-engine maker into civil aerospace, defence and power systems units, with naval marine and nuclear submarines consolidated into defence and civil nuclear into power systems.
SBM Offshore Hands over FPSO Turritella to Shell
SBM Offshore said it has completed the transaction related to the sale of floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel Turritella to Shell E and P Offshore Services B.V. Shell exercised an option to purchase the FPSO from SBM Offshore in summer 2017. The Turritella FPSO is contracted for the Stones deepwater development in the Gulf of Mexico, which began production in 2016. The vessel has a daily production capacity of approximately 60,000 barrels of oil and 15 million cubic feet of natural gas.
BMT Hires Strategy Director Tomlinson
BMT has appointed Guy Tomlinson as Group Capability and Strategy Director. Tomlinson joins BMT from QinetiQ where he led a 35-strong business development team as UK Sales Director. He brings to the role experience from across the maritime, defense, cyber and information and training domains, as well as leading on several sales and business development transformation programs. Prior to joining QinetiQ, Tomlinson served in the Royal Air Force for 23 years as an engineer officer, with operational tours in Iraq, Kosovo and the Falkland Islands.
FSL Trust Sells Vessel to Trim Debt
FSL Trust Management, as trusteemanager of First Ship Lease Trust (FSL Trust), announces that the Trust has sold its chemical tanker, FSL Tokyo, for a cash consideration of US$13.8 million. FSL Tokyo is a 2006, Japanese-built, 20,938 DWT chemical tanker that has been deployed in the spot market. The net proceeds from this Disposal will be applied in full to the outstanding loan facility in 1Q2018. FSL Trust will record a related impairment charge of approximately US$9.0 million in 4Q2017.
Hyundai Heavy Sets 2018 Sales Target $7.5 billion
South Korea's leading shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) aims to achieve 7.98 trillion won ($7.5 billion) in sales this year as its president warned of an unprecedented crisis due to declining order backlogs, reports Yonhap. Hyundai Heavy has not won any offshore plant orders for the past two years. The company's 2018 sales target represents a 60 percent decline from a decade ago. The shipyard said it is expected to post an estimated 10.03 trillion won in sales for 2017. The sales target is based on a parent base.
ClassNK Updates Scrubbers Guidelines
Classification society ClassNK said it has released the second version of its Guidelines for Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems. Based on the first version Guidelines released in August 2014, the latest version includes the results of joint research and testing on actual Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems. In an effort to reduce SOx and PM emissions from ships, MARPOL Annex VI limits the maximum allowable amount of sulphur contents of fuel oil used onboard globally, as well as place stricter requirements in geographically defined Emission Control Areas (ECA). Last October it was determined that stricter global sulphur limit of 0.5 percent is to be started on 1 January 2020.
New ClassNK Guidelines for Gas-fueled Ships
Classification society ClassNK has released the fourth version of its Guidelines for Gas Fueled Ships. With the introduction of increasingly strict environmental regulations, the industry is now turning toward the use of cleaner fuels such as LNG and more recently other low flashpoint fuels such as methanol to curb their NOx, SOx and PM emissions. The new guidelines provide comprehensive, up-to-date information on key design features relating to bunkering, hull structure, fire safety and explosion prevention measures for gas-fueled vessels.
Transas Launches Enhanced Navi-Sailor
In mid-July, Transas commercially launched the latest version of its new-generation marine navigation and information system, Navi-Sailor 3000. The Navi-Sailor 3000 ver.2 has been designed in line with the latest IMO regulations for UAIS interface. As such, Navi-Sailor 3000 has been provided with the capability to send, receive and display UAIS transponder information exactly as it is prescribed by international requirements. Compliance is achieved in the UAIS message format, content and interface of the send/receive facility, while full static, voyage and ship movement data are displayed on the electronic chart screen in strict accordance with the international standards.
