Safe Harbors -Ports Take Approach to Automated Surveillance

As primary commerce hubs, ports are obvious targets for crime and terrorism. One of the primary tools that port security directors have relied on for security is video surveillance. The approach of recording video, reviewing the tape for improprieties apprehending the offender has worked somewhat for run-of-the-mill criminal activity. With today's threat from terrorism, however, this approach is no longer acceptable. The latest trend in port security focuses on implementing an enterprise approach in which all of port's sensor technologies including video, chemical, fire and others are linked together through information technology into a single, smart command center.

VistaScape for Port of Wilmington

The Port of Wilmington, Del. deployed VistaScape's SiteIQ software to automate surveillance, enforce port security policy, and increase the effectiveness of its security staff in responding to and preventing violations. SiteIQ is part of an overall security upgrade for the Port funded through $1.7 million in grants from the Transportation Security Administration and the Office of Domestic Preparedness. Advantech, Inc. of Dover, Del. A full-service deepwater port and marine terminal, the Port handles more than 400 vessels per year with an annual import/export cargo tonnage of 5 million tons. It comprises more than 350 acres, including the largest dock-side cold storage facility in North America.

Port of Wilmington Installs Surveillance System

Port of Wilmington, Del. has deployed VistaScape's SiteIQ software to automate surveillance, enforce port security policy, and increase the effectiveness of its security staff in responding to and preventing violations. The selection of SiteIQ further extends VistaScape's market leadership in the maritime sector for software-based intelligent surveillance systems. SiteIQ is part of an overall security upgrade for the Port funded through $1.7 million in grants from the Transportation Security Administration and the Office of Domestic Preparedness. Advantech, Inc. of Dover, Del. is the security integrator for the Port. It partnered with Honeywell to provide and install the integrated video surveillance, access control, and digital video storage solutions.

Adesta Helps Secure Port of Baltimore

Adesta LLC, an Omaha, Neb.-based systems integrator, signed a $5.5 million contract with the Maryland Port Administration to design and install a sophisticated security system at the Port of Baltimore. The project will include the installation of a remote video surveillance system as well as enhancements to terminal perimeter security. The expected completion date for the project is fall 2006. The system will provide the Port with total perimeter security and includes a fully scalable communications and electronic security network. The perimeter security measures include closed circuit television, video analytics by VistaScape Security Systems, and force protection for all terminals located at the Port.
