The port State control regimes which carry out inspections on ships to monitor and enforce compliance with international regulations have pledged to strengthen their collaboration with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and amongst themselves. A recent workshop (24-26 October) for port State control (PSC) MoU/Agreement Secretaries and Database Managers and Member States, the seventh of its kind, was held at IMO headquarters in London, United Kingdom. Participants shared experiences, highlighted new projects and approved a wide range of recommendations, which are aimed at further collaboration, harmonization and information sharing. The recommendations will be forwarded for review by IMO and the regional governing bodies of PSC regimes.

Ki-tack Lim from the Republic of Korea has been elected as the new Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), with effect from January 1, 2016, for an initial term of four years, the IMO announced. The current president of Busan Port Authority, Lim has served as the Republic of Korea’s Deputy Permanent Representative to IMO from 2006 to 2009 and was Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Flag State Implementation (FSI) from 2002 to 2004. Lim majored in nautical science at the Korea Maritime and Ocean University (KMOU), Busan, graduating in 1977.

By the established deadline of 31 March 2015, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has received the nominations of six candidates, nominated by their Governments for the position of Secretary-General of IMO. The election for the post will be held at the 114th session of the 40-Member strong IMO Council, which meets from 29 June to 3 July 2015. The Russian Federation has nominated Vitaly Klyuev, Russia’s Deputy Director of the Department of State Policy for Maritime and River Transport, as a candidate for the post of Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), marking the first time ever that a candidate from Russia will compete for the IMO SG's post. Russia has been a member state of the IMO since the organization’s inception. Voting for the IMO Secretary General post will begin in June 2015, and the new Secretary General will assume the office from January 1, 2016.

The Paris Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control (Paris MoU) Committee met in Vilnius, Lithuania, from 19 - 23 May 2014. Among other matters, the report of the Harmonized Verification Programme (HAVEP) on passenger ships (objective to obtain a view of emergency preparedness on passenger ships) was discussed. The meeting was attended by all members, the European Commission, EMSA, Montenegro, observers from the ILO, US Coast Guard, Black Sea MoU, Caribbean MoU, Mediterranean MoU, Tokyo MoU and Viña del Mar Agreement. Since the implementation of the new inspection regime on 1st of January, 2011, there is a clear indication that it is showing positive results.

Updated charts of the Northern Sea Route without the 'white spots' will be created in 2015-2016, in addition, the Ministry of Transport is planning to organize this year's transfer of jurisdiction from the Ministry of Defence to FSUE 'Hydrographic Enterprise' or in its own subordinate structure, said the deputy director of the Department of State Policy for Maritime and River Transport of Russia, Vitaly Klyuev. "We will increase the hydrographic work in the Arctic to the year 2015-2016 to get a real picture of the depths for safe navigation,"  he said at a news conference in RIA Novosti, devoted to the preparation of the Russian exposition at the World exhibition "Expo-2012" to be held from May to August in South Korea.
