Nobeltec announces new hardware integration and software functionality with the service pack release of Admiral 11.1 and VNS 11.1. Actisense, the marine electronics brand from Active Research, based in Poole, UK, announced its collaboration with Nobeltec, the US based developer of PC-based marine navigation software programmes and supplier of electronic charts, hardware, and accessories, to integrate NMEA 2000 into Nobeltec software packages. Powered by Actisense technology, the Nobeltec NMEA 2000 Gateway (NGT-1-NBL) has been designed to transfer NMEA 2000 data from the NMEA 2000 bus to PC’s running the Nobeltec VNS 11 and Admiral 11 navigation software programs. The Viet Nam Shipbuilding Industry Group (Vinashin) signed 22 contracts worth $2b at Vietship, the country’s largest shipping exhibition being held in Ha Noi,  VNS said. The contracts, signed with both domestic and foreign partners, covered shipbuilding, maritime transportation, developing ancillary industries for ’s shipping fleet and financing and insurance, Vinashin said in its written statement. Noteworthy deals included a contract to build a 16,800 DWT cement carrying vessel for KGJS of Norway, a contract to build 16 cargo vessels for Jebsens of Norway and a contract to build a 11,000 DWT cargo ship for Kanematsu of Japan. According to VNS, Nam Trieu Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, under the Viet Nam Shipbuilding Industry Group, began construction of a 56,200-tonne vessel, the first of three vessels for Japan’s Lavender Maritime S.A. The 623 ft. will be built under Japan’s NK Register in 22 months. The HCM City-based Sai Gon Shipbuilding Industry Company Ltd. (SSIC) and the Danish owner, the Erria A/S, launched a new 2,900 DWT container vessel. The new small river and seagoing container ship, named Erria Viet Nam, was built under a $5m contract signed between SSIC and Erria in November 2005. Construction of the vessel began in February 2006. Under the contract, SSIC, a subsidiary of the Viet Nam Shipbuilding Industry Corp. (Vinashin) is undertaking the construction. Source: VNS

The Shinec Shipbuilding Joint Stock Co, a subsidiary of Vinashin, signed an agreement to establish a joint venture with the Czech Republic’s Viking Cordage Co, VNS reported. The joint venture will invest US$5 million in a factory in the Vinashin-Shinec Industrial Zone in Hai Phong’s Thuy Nguyen District. The facility will manufacture devices for navigation which have not been previously produced in Viet Nam, including nets and cables made from natural and artificial fibres, according to Shinec. Shinec specialises in producing ship interiors. The company has previously supplied products to customers in the Czech Republic and the UK. The Da Nang-based Song Thu Co laid the keels for four 5,000 hp tugboats at a ceremony on Saturday. The 24-metre long, 11-metre wide vessels, known as ASD (Azimuth stern driver) 2411, will be built by the State-owned company for the Netherlands-based Damen group under a $18.75m contract signed last year. The Dutch group will supply the design, technologies, and equipment for building the vessels. Colonel Ha Son Hai, the company’s managing director, said the tugboats would be completed in 36 months. He said this year Song Thu would also build a 3,500 hp rescue vessel for the coast guard, vessels to respond to oil spills, and multi-purpose vessels for use in the oil and gas sector. Source: VNS

The Dung Quat Economic Zone in the central province of Quang Ngai has to date attracted 103 projects with a combined capital of over $5b, according to the Investment and Trade Promotion Centre of the zone’s management board. In 2006 alone, twenty projects were licensed in the zone, capitalized at over $1.1b, $832,of which came from foreign-invested projects. Among major new projects were a $1b steel mill by Taiwan’s Tycoons Group, a $260m heavy industrial complex by the Doosan Group of South Korea, and PetroVietnam’s $2.5b Dung Quat oil refinery. A company official said Vinalines would continue to invest in building new seaports in Dinh Vu, off the northern port city of Hai Phong, in Quang Ninh Province; Hiep Phuoc in HCM City; Cai Mep-Thi Vai in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, in addition to Vung Tau container port. The company is aiming for an average cargo capacity of between 50-55 million tonnes at each of its ports by 2010. Vinalines is also looking to turn Van Phong port in the central province of Khanh Hoa into a modern international entrepot. Vinalines expects to complete the first phase of its building plans for logistical and maritime services nationwide by 2010. Vinalines said it is also planning to move into banking and finance, as well as shipbuilding and transport-infrastructure development.

Vietnam President Nguyen Minh Triet said that he expected the Viet Nam Shipbuilding Industry Group (Vinashin) to increase its international profile by producing more ships for the world market. Triet made these comments at a meeting with company officials and the management board of the Dung Quat Shipbuilding Company in central Quang Ngai Province. Triet also visited the Dung Quat Oil Refinery Plant and held meetings with the management board. Deputy General Director of the Viet Nam Oil and Gas Corporation Truong Van Tien briefed the President on the progress of construction over the past year, and affirmed that the management board was working closely with the project contractor to resolve issues, particularly in speeding up construction. The Viet Nam Shipbuilding Industry Group (Vinashin) has snatched up two large contracts with UK partners worth $800m. The contracts were executed during the Viet Nam Days in the UK business forum on trade, investment and tourism last Friday in London. Vinashin inked a $100m deal with Graig Investment Ltd to build 25 ships and another to build a floating oil tank for the Viet Nam Oil and Gas Corporation (PetroVietnam), worth $680 million. The latter deal was signed with Monobuyo Co, Petromaritime Consulting and London Maritime Consultants. In 2003, Vinashin signed contracts with the company worth $500 million to build 6,500- and 12,000-DWT freighters and 13,000 DWT container ships. It also won another $322.5 million contract to build 15 cargo ships of 53,000 DWT each in 2004.

Reports said that Viet Nam Industrial Shipbuilding Corporation (Vinashin) Expects to earn $500m from shipbuilding contracts through next year, the Ministry of Trade reported. Export turnover from the shipbuilding industry stood at $200 million last year. Vinashin has finished negotiating shipbuilding contracts with foreign buyers that would generate an estimated $1.5b in revenue through 2009. Vinashin estimates that with an investment of $3b over the next 10 years, it would reach a productivity of $3b per year. The corporation was currently implementing large shipyard projects approved by the Government. The Ministry of Trade concurred that, by 2010, the domestic shipbuilding industry could earn $1.7 billion from building and exporting ships.

The Government Office announced a proposal to establish the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Economic Group (Vinashin Group) by restructuring the Viet Nam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin) had been approved. The Vinashin Group would become a multiple-owner business with the State holding a majority stake, comprised of State-owned and equitised subsidiaries, it said. Under the plan, the group would function as the financial investor for its other concerns, and control the capital holdings, technology, trademarks and markets of its subsidiary companies. The Government also issued official approval of the establishment of a holding company for the Ha Noi-based Viet Nam Shipbuilding Industry Group.

According to reports, Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin) recently announced it would invest $18.9m in the construction of a shipyard in the southernmost province of Ca Mau. Vinashin said it had selected a 54 hectare site in the province’s Nam Can District for the new facility, which is to be used to build ships displacing 5,000-10,000 tons, the average size of its current fleet. Up to 4,000 employees will work at the new shipyard once it is operational in 2008, and the State-owned company is already working with provincial authorities to train local workers. Vinashin said its latest project was part of its plan to increase local content in shipbuilding to 65 percent by 2010, which would require investment of about $633 m.

The Viet Nam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin) generated a turnover of $493 million last year, marking a 41 percent jump over 2004 revenue. Last year the corporation signed a number of major construction contracts for large cargo ships. Many of the deals were made with countries with advanced shipbuilding capacity, including Denmark, the UK and Poland. Last August, Vinashin closed a $68 million deal to supply four container ships to Denmark’s Rederiet Fabricius A/S. Fabricius Marine placed a $4.3 million order for a 2,500 DWT container ship, scheduled for delivery by late 2006, while the company took on a $212 million contract to build eight cargo ships for UK-based Graig Investment Company.
