Arena Named VP at Shipbuilder

Huntington Ingalls Industries announced today that Jon Arena has been named vice president and chief counsel of HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding division. He will succeed Jim Gildea, who retired on April 1. Arena will be a key member of the law department’s leadership team, reporting directly to Kellye Walker, executive vice president and chief legal officer, and indirectly to Newport News Shipbuilding President Jennifer Boykin. In this role, he will be responsible for providing legal advice and counsel to senior management and overseeing and coordinating the provision of legal advice to Newport News. Arena comes to HII from Boeing, where he served as senior counsel, Boeing Global Services, since 2015. Prior to Boeing, he served as a senior attorney at NASA from 2002 to 2015.

David Spivak Leaves Seaspan Corporation as CFO

Seaspan Corporation announced  that David Spivak, Chief Financial Officer of Seaspan, has given notice that he is exercising his right to terminate his employment with Seaspan effective June 29, 2018 to pursue other opportunities. Spivak will continue in his current role until May 5, 2018, after which Ryan Courson will be appointed Chief Financial Officer and Spivak will continue with Seaspan as Special Advisor to the President and Chief Executive Officer through the end of June. Courson joined Seaspan in March 2018 as Senior Vice President of Corporate Development. He played a significant role in Seaspan's recent acquisition of GCI, working closely with Chen,  Spivak and other senior executives at Seaspan on all aspects of the transaction.

Courson to Replace Spivak as Seaspan CFO

Ship owner Seaspan Corporation announced that Ryan Courson will take over as the company’s chief financial officer following David Spivak’s decision to leave the post in early May. Spivak will continue as CFO until May 5 and will stay on as special advisor to the president and chief executive officer through the end of June. Courson joined Seaspan in March 2018 as senior vice president of corporate development. Prior to joining Seaspan, he spent three years at Falcon Edge Capital, and before that worked at Teton Capital as an investment professional and acting CFO of Teton’s largest investment, Davos Brands. Courson began his career working at Berkshire Hathaway. He is fluent in Mandarin and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Washington University in St.

Meidel Joins Crowley Fuels in Alaska

Rick Meidel has joined Crowley Fuels as vice president and general manager, responsible for the performance and day-to-day operations of Crowley’s Alaska division. Meidel previously spent 32 years with ExxonMobil in downstream lubricants, retail fuels marketing, refinery optimization and natural gas and co-generation power commercialization. He earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Washington University in St. Louis. In his new role, Meidel will be based in Anchorage and report to Rocky Smith, senior vice president and general manager.

Boykin Tapped as Next Newport News President

Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) Board of Directors has elected Jennifer R. Boykin to serve as executive vice president of HII and president of HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding division, effective July 1. She will succeed Matt Mulherin, who announced that he will retire on August 1 after a 36-year career at Newport News Shipbuilding. Boykin, who will report to HII President and CEO Mike Petters effective July 1, currently serves as vice president, engineering and design for Newport News Shipbuilding.

New Commander at US Navy Installations Command

Vice Adm. Mary M. Jackson relieved Vice Adm. Dixon R. Smith at a change of command ceremony for Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) March 31, at the Washington Navy Yard. The ceremony included the presentation of colors by the U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard color guard, national anthem by the U.S. Navy Band and remarks from guest speaker, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson. "While here, I've witnessed firsthand the tremendous dedication of our civilians and Sailors who support the fleet, warfighters and their families," said Smith. Smith served as the head of the Navy's entire shore infrastructure for approximately two and a half years and was the fifth commander of CNIC since the command's inception in 2003.

Tony Bon: From Yarn Handler to CEO

January of 2017 saw the retirement of one of the veterans of the Samson family. Tony Bon, CEO through 2015 retired as of December 31, 2016. Bon shares his impressions of the time he’s been with Samson and the high points of both the company and the industry it serves. In the Navy they have an expression to describe a captain that moves up through the ranks: “He came up through the hawse pipes.” Bon’s journey to the corner office at Samson is a similar story. In 1974, after leaving Berklee College of Music in Boston, Bon needed a job.

Mattis Takes Oath as 26th Defense Secretary

By a 98-1 vote, the Senate confirmed retired Marine Corps Gen. James Mattis to be the 26th secretary of defense Jan. 20, and Vice President Michael R. Pence administered his oath of office shortly afterward.R. Pence administered his oath of office shortly afterward. Mattis is the first retired general officer to hold the position since General of the Army George C. Marshall in the early 1950s. Congress passed a waiver for the retired four-star general to serve in the position, because law requires former service members to have been out of uniform for at least seven years to serve as defense secretary. Mattis retired from the Marine Corps in 2013. Mattis is a veteran of the Gulf War and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. His military career culminated with service as commander of U.S.

Imperatore, Founder and President of New York Waterways; Captain Donald Marcus, International President of the International Organization of Masters, Mates & Pilots; and Christopher Wiernicki, Chairman, President and CEO of the American Bureau of Shipping, were recipients of the maritime industry's most prestigious Admiral of the Ocean Sea awards presented at the 47th annual United Seamen's Service gala industry dinner and dance October 28, 2016. The event was held at the at the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel, New York City. Recognition was also given to American seafarers for specific acts of bravery and heroism while at sea. ABS Chairman, President and CEO, Christopher J. Wiernicki, was honored for his contributions to the maritime industry by the United Seamen’s Service (USS) as a recipient of the Admiral of the Ocean Seas Award on October  28, 2016 in New York. “I am humbled to accept this award, not for me, but rather on behalf of the more than 5,000 worldwide employees of ABS and the 1.5 million mariners who day in and day out keep this industry moving and our global economy expanding,” Wiernicki said. The award is conferred on those who have made noteworthy contributions to the maritime industry.
