Contaminated marine fuels from several suppliers led to fouled engines on about a dozen vessels operating from the U.S. Gulf Coast this spring, according to Lloyd's Register and marine fuel testing service VPS.The tainted fuel was the first major occurrence along the U.S.

Canadian naval architecture firm Robert Allan Ltd. has unveiled a methanol-fueled RAptor 2400 crew transfer vessel (CTV), bringing the offshore wind industry closer to eliminating carbon emissions from the supply chain.As a marine fuel, methanol provides emissions benefits that are similar to natural gas when it comes to reducing CO2, NOx, SOx and particulates, but without the need for cryogenic or pressurized fuel tanks. This reduces capital cost, saves space and allows more fuel to be carried.

Together with Shell, Van Oord is testing the use of biofuel on its fleet. The biofuel reduces CO2 emissions by more than 40% compared with conventional marine fuel. This test fits in with the ambitions of both parties to reduce the CO2 emissions in the maritime industry. The first pilot will take place during a dredging project in Germany on Van Oord's trailing suction hopper dredger HAM 316.The shipping industry is being faced by major sustainability challenges. By 2050, global shipping will have to emit an average of 50% less CO2 than in 2008.

Danish shipping and logistics company DFDS has decided to invest in startup company Mash Energy ApS to develop a commercially viable biofuel.The Danish ro-ro giant said in a press note that MASH Energy ApS produces biofuel from agricultural waste, currently from the by-products of nut processing in Tanzania and India.The biofuel is CO2 neutral and can be used in ships. PAO Novatek announced that its subsidiary OOO Arctic LNG 3 commenced drilling of the first well at the North-Obskiy license area located in the shallow waters of the Ob Bay.The initial well is drilled using a jack-up floating drilling rig “Amazon” leased from “Gazprom flot”. Container shipping: Change required for higher ratesDemandThe growing imports of loaded containers into the U.S. East Coast (USEC) continues to be a focal point for the container shipping industry. Growing by 10.4 percent in Q1-2018, the first three months saw 215,000 TEU more entering the USEC than in Q1-2017. Exports grew by 55,000 TEU in the same time span, growing outbound loaded containers by 3.8 percent.This illustrates the constantly changing imbalance in U.S. foreign trade. For every five containers entering the USEC in 2013, four were exported.

Ecoslops, an innovative technology company that upgrades ship-generated hydrocarbon residues into valuable new fuels and light bitumen,  announced key achievements for the first half of 2017. Ecoslops has confirmed the excellent performance of the first industrial micro-refinery unit (P2R) in the Port of Sines, Portugal and the strong growth dynamics of its production. Production doubled, from 6,050 tonnes to 12,200 during the same period last year and sales in tonnes amounted to 9,700, vs. 3,700 in H1 2016. The operator of a Portsmouth-based barge has today been made to pay almost £111,000 in fines and costs after pleading guilty to a breach of maritime legislation. Serco Ltd. admitted an offence at Portsmouth Crown Court in relation to the health and safety of workers aboard the barge 1706, which is operated as part of a service contract with the U.K. Ministry of Defense. The primary function of the barge is to collect waste products from naval vessels when they were moored in Portsmouth. On July 6, 2011, barge 1706 was secured alongside a warship at Portsmouth Naval Base and was taking waste water from the vessel. A short while later, the crew started to smell the distinctive 'rotten eggs' odor of hydrogen sulphide (H2S).

The coolant collecting and recycling system is projected to save Caterpillar Undercarriage Xuzhou Ltd. (CUXL) nearly 600L of coolant each year and reduce hazardous waste disposal by 20 tonnes annually. What’s more, the facility could save more than $11,000 in the first year alone, with savings climbing even higher as product volume increases. This is the way CUXL's Quality Manager Lake Lian describes an outdated machining coolant collecting system that has been costing one of our Undercarriage facilities in China more than $10,000 per year in waste disposal fees alone. The U.S. Energy Department on Wednesday unveiled a plan for up to $4 billion in loan aid for renewable energy companies to help rejuvenate a program that faced harsh political attacks over past failures of federally subsidized projects. The Obama administration's draft plan would provide loan guarantees for innovative projects that limit or avoid greenhouse gas emissions. It will specifically focus on advanced electric grid technology and storage, biofuels for conventional vehicles, energy from waste products and energy efficiency.

OW Bunker, a physical distributors and resellers of marine fuels, today announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Genoil, the global engineering technology development company. The relationship has been established to build a facility that can produce 0.1% low sulphur fuel oil, and provide ship owners and operators with the opportunity to buy a cheaper product than distillates that still meets ECA compliance regulations. As part of the agreement, Genoil will finance the building of a Hydroconversion Upgrading System (GHU) within Europe. The facility is primarily designed for hydro cracking and the desulphurization of fuel oils.

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) has authorized limited marine traffic in the safety zone in the Port of Houston/Galveston for commercial ship traffic, Tuesday. Cleanup operations are still ongoing; however ships are being prioritized for transit by the Port Coordination Team. Steven E. Avery, 56, of Bohannon, VA, Billy J. Avery, 81, of Virginia Beach, VA, and the corporation Sea Solutions, Inc., all pleaded guilty yesterday in Norfolk federal court to various environmental crimes stemming from their activities in the ship scrapping business. Neil H. MacBride, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, made the announcement that the plea was accepted by U.S. District Judge Arenda L. Wright Allen. The three will all be sentenced on July 12, 2012.

Four Filipino seamen received a total of $250,000 dollars from the U.S. Department of Justice for their initiative in protecting the environment. The four informed the U.S. Coast Guard of the actions of the M/V Katerina, a ship that was found to be in violation of international and U.S. environmental laws. U.S. Embassy Chargé Joseph Mussomeli presented the cash awards to Jonathan Sanchez, Jimmy Piamonte, Florencio Tolentino and Richard Santillan during a ceremony held today at the U.S. Embassy in the Phillippines. 1. "Ship efficiency is a question of perspective", this is one conclusion of the two-day expert conference of the German Society for Maritime Technology on "How to make ships more efficient?". More than 150 participants from all over the world attended the first international conference on ship efficiency in Hamburg. Increasing fuel prices and strong environmental concerns have initiated the high ranking forum of naval architects, ship engineers, ship owners, ship builders, maritime institutions and suppliers, classification societies, financial analysts investors, academics and media representatives. Participants came from Australia, Denmark, Indonesia, Italy, Iran, Norway, Sweden Finland, Greece, Austria, Switzerland, UK, India, Korea and the US.

Taking a moment to think back to when Holland America Line (HAL) first announced the formulation of the new Vista Class at the Sea Trade Cruise Shipping Show in Miami, Fla. in March 2001, it is almost as though we are living in a different world. The cruise industry was booming, there was no such thing, as the Office of Homeland Security and the threats of terrorism seemed only real in distant lands. One thing is the same, however, and that is that despite all these obstacles — both financial and political — HAL stood its ground to work with Fincantieri to build a vessel class like no other - both on the technical and design fronts.
