GEG, Proman to Build Renewables-to-Methanol Plant at Nigg Oil Terminal

UK-based Global Energy Group and Swiss-based integrated energy company, Proman have partnered up to develop a renewable power to methanol plant using local sources of captured CO2 to be located at the Nigg Oil Terminal in the Highlands of Scotland.GEG is also the owner of the Nigg Oil Terminal and Proman is the second-largest methanol producer in the world-GEG said that the development of an industrial-scale renewable power to methanol production facility with CO2 to be provided from local industrial sources will be known as the “Cromarty Clean Fuels Project“.

Rolls-Royce Wins Propulsion Contract for Nine RoRo Vessels

Rolls-Royce Commercial Marine has won a significant contract to deliver the propulsion system to nine vessels to be built by Nanjing Jinling Shipyard Co in China for the Italian Grimaldi Group.The nine 238 meter long vessels are so called Ro-Ro vessels (Roll-on-Roll-off) designed to transport over 7,800 linear meters of rolling units, equivalent to about 500 trailers. They are named the Grimaldi Green 5th Generation, and will be hybrid powered by combining use of traditional fossil fuels during operation and battery power when in port. Exhaust Economizers: A Silent Contributor to Green Technology

Next generation economizers are being introduced by Ulmatec Pyro. This will carry on the history of 35 years of heat recovery from ship’s exhaust – a technology that’s still unknown for many in the marine industry. You can’t ignore waste energy recovery systems if you want to participate in discussions about efficient marine designs. That statement is based on the fact that most diesel engines on board a vessel still operate on an efficiency scale in the 30 percent range. The remaining 60-70 percent represents losses, converted into heat.

GE Powers Maersk’s Mega Ships

GE’s Marine Solutions recently delivered its power take off/power take in (PTO/PTI) solution along with its Power Management System digital software solution onboard four of the largest container vessels owned by Maersk Line—Madrid Maersk, Munich Maersk, Moscow Maersk and Milan Maersk. Madrid Maersk is the first container vessel delivered from Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME)—back in April—and Munich Maersk and Moscow Maersk have both completed successful sea trials. Milan Maersk will soon be in service.

All in a Day’s Walk

Just over the horizon, a new ‘Integration Strategy’ promises offshore safety and efficiencies. Kongsberg’s Walk-to-Work technology is just the beginning. Maritime technology has come on in leaps and bounds since the turn of the century. We have the technology to keep an offshore support vessel on station within a 0.5-meter radius, even in the most severe weather conditions and sea states. We have the technology to manage power output, and control drives and thrusters to the ‘nth’ degree, providing safety and reliability for all ship handling operations. And we have the technology to deliver gigabytes of data to shore without paying for a helicopter or a mid-ocean drop off of hard drives or DVDs. So, what’s next? Arguably, the ‘big’ topic is unmanned vessels.

ABB debuts Dynamic AC Concept

Zurich, Switzerland, March 14 2016 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, is launching a new Dynamic AC (DAC) concept that optimizes engine speed, leading to significant fuel savings. It joins a number of established ABB products, such as Azipod propulsion and the Onboard DC Grid, which maximize energy efficiency for vessel owners. For a large cruise ship, for example, up to 6 percent (or up to 2000 tons of fuel) of annual savings can be achieved by engine speed optimization. The concept has been created with a simple configuration of electrical system using existing and proven ABB components, which ensures quality and reliability. The concept is new to the commercial maritime industry.

Pumps and Piping: A Curious Turn to the Right

Owners and shipyards come to the realization that alternative composition piping and pumps represent the way forward. You cannot put a vessel to work without pumps, valves and piping. Too often, product selection is left to the discretion of those who view these items as inconsequential decisions, driven primarily by not much more than initial cost. That mindset, in an atmosphere of cost-cutting, the quest for fuel economy and reduction in total lifecycle costs, is changing – albeit ever so slowly. Led in part by success in the military and naval sector, workboat operators are now taking a hard look at both plastic and glass reinforced epoxy (GRE) piping, as well as pumps and valves built with alternative composite materials.

Big Ships Can Lose Big Money on Pumps

A  project by pump maufacturer Grundfos aboard a Lauritzen Bulkers cargo ship shows that large vessels could be losing money on wasted energy. The project, carried out on the 19,889-ton Durban Bulker, focused on efficiency in ship’s pumps. The Durban Bulker project focused on the energy used in cooling off the ship’s engines. The ship uses pumped seawater to cool its engines, but the previous system did not take into account the temperature of the water. When the Durban Bulker is sailing in colder seas…

New Pumps Save Millions at Sea

A Grundfos project aboard a Lauritzen Bulkers cargo ship shows that large vessels could be losing money on wasted energy. A pilot project between Grundfos and Danish shipping operator Lauritzen Bulkers shows that better technology and a sharp focus on pump efficiency can mean big savings on the bottom line. The project, carried out on the 19,889-ton Durban Bulker, focused on efficiency in ship’s pumps. “Ships often use oversized pumps that consume too much power,” says Kim Kirkegaard, Business Development Manager at Grundfos. The project paid off.

GL Completes EEDI Certification

Germanischer Lloyd (GL) presented Carisbrooke Shipping with energy efficiency design index (EEDI) certificates for four low emission dry cargo vessels. Built by Chinese shipyard Jiangsu Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, the four 8500 DWT sister vessels, the Vectis Eagle, Falcon, Harrier and Osprey incorporate a number of innovative features, including the distinctive Groot Cross-Bow(r). The four vessels, which have been built to Finnish Swedish Iceclass 1A, have been designed and constructed to optimize energy efficiency in almost every facet of operation.
