MSC Cruises confirmed it exercised options for two new World Class cruise ships from French shipbuilder Chantiers de l’Atlantique. The liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered newbuilds, currently referred to as World Class 3 and 4, will be delivered in 2026 and 2027. MSC Cruises also holds an option for a fifth ship in the series.The newly ordered ships will be an evolution of the World Class vessels, MSC World Europa and MSC World America, which already perform better than the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) requirement.

Confusion surrounding the entry into force date of MEPC 227(64), the amended regulation governing ship wastewater discharge overboard requirements, could see some shipowners falling foul of the new rules. Mark Beavis, the Managing Director of ACO Marine, a supplier of MEPC.227(64) compliant wastewater treatment systems, believes that any further delay from the IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) in formally announcing a new date will create further confusion. “A number of shipowners believe the deferred entry into force applies to MEPC.227(64) in its entirety, but this is not our understanding. The International Maritime Organisation, at its MEPC 68 postponed only the entry-into-force date of the ‘Special Area’ sewage discharge requirements.

ACO Marine announced it has signed a contract to supply a bespoke version of its new Clarimar MF wastewater treatment plant to the CFT 623 wellhead platform under construction for Dubai’s Dragon Oil. The specially adapted Clarimar MF-2 has capacity to treat 3.5 cubic meters of black and grey wastewater per day and features a sludge tank for liquid discharges from drilling operations. “The offshore oil and gas sector is an important market for ACO Marine,” said ACO Marine’s managing director Mark Beavis.

Hyde Marine’s chemical-free, IMO Type Approved ballast water treatment solution packs performance in a smaller footprint. That’s good news for small vessel operators who may soon find themselves impacted by a problem that previously was thought to be a “bluewater” issue. The notion that ballast water treatment and invasive species are both strictly the domain of big, bluewater liners coming from the Far East and other exotic locales quickly went out the porthole last November when the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued its long-awaited, updated draft Vessel General Permit (VGP) rule. The new rules potentially bring regulations to bear on vessels as small as 79 feet LOA and others, depending on service and routing.

Wastewater treatment systems on four popular cruise ships will receive a $9.2 million upgrade intended to enhance compliance with marine discharge regulations, according to a release issued by Hydroxyl Systems Inc. Hydroxyl, a Victoria-based manufacturer, was recently awarded contracts from Miami-based Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines to design and build four CleanSea environmental water process systems, said the report. The systems will combine Hydroxyl's bio-film carrier process for high-rate biodegradation with its dissolved air flotation equipment, both of which decrease space requirements and system lifecycle costs, Hydroxyl representatives said in the release.

Cruise ship lines will cover Washington's costs to administer an environmental agreement that limits and tracks wastewater discharges from large cruise liners. The Department of Ecology (Ecology) and the Port of Seattle have signed a companion accord to the 2004 memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Ecology, the Port and the NorthWest CruiseShip Association (NWCA). Ecology spent approximately $47,500 to inspect the wastewater treatment systems aboard the large ships, collect and test wastewater samples, review records, monitor compliance and prepare reports last year. The Port will reimburse Ecology for those costs, and collect that amount from NWCA-member ships - the large liners that sail between Seattle and Alaska from April to October each year - as part of their moorage fees.
