First Mobile MTU Gas Engines for Rederij Doeksen

The first two preproduction units of the new mobile MTU gas engine from Rolls-Royce have completed performance tests and were accepted by the customer at the beginning of December. MTU delivered the first two of a total of four 16-cylinder Series 4000 gas engines, each with an output of 1,492 kW, for two new catamarans. From 2018, the two aluminum vessels will operate ferry services on the Dutch Wadden Sea. They are currently being built by Strategic Marine’s shipyard in Vietnam for the Dutch shipping company Doeksen.

Cat Delivers 3412C Marine Genset as a Complete MCS-Certified Package

The 3412C marine genset from Caterpillar Marine Power Systems now arrives at shipyards as a complete MCS-certified package. Vessel builders receive the ready-to-install genset as a complete package to be installed as a single component on-board in a simple “plug and play” fashion. Caterpillar provides Marine Classification Society (MCS) certification direct from its factories. Vessel builders are assured a familiar genset electrical interface that is well documented in advance, allowing the shipyard to plan the installation and be prepared for simple on-board wiring configurations. In addition, the genset arrives complete with a functionally tested alarm and protection system.

Association for Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems

The Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems Association (EGCSA) was launched March 30 to provide a sustainable operating environment within the marine industry for exhaust gas cleaning system technologies. The EGCSA has been formed from companies and organizational divisions that manufacture exhaust gas cleaning systems for the marine sector. The founder companies of the association are Aalborg Industries, Clean Marine, Krystallon, Marine Exhaust Solutions, and Wartsila. New Compact Genset Muffler

Equipment noise can quickly spoil the ambiance of even the most luxurious craft. Such problems are a thing of the past for lovely 130' Lady Kath, according to her captain, Bill Hipple. A new Marine Exhaust Systems G-19 water drop generator muffler significantly reduced genset exhaust noise, creating more peaceful days and nights for all onboard. After the installation, Lady Kath's 65 kW naturally aspirated Northern Lights generator exhaust was only 74 dBA. This allows normal tone conversation.

ClassNK Updates Scrubbers Guidelines

Classification society ClassNK said it has released the second version of its Guidelines for Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems. Based on the first version Guidelines released in August 2014, the latest version includes the results of joint research and testing on actual Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems. In an effort to reduce SOx and PM emissions from ships, MARPOL Annex VI limits the maximum allowable amount of sulphur contents of fuel oil used onboard globally, as well as place stricter requirements in geographically defined Emission Control Areas (ECA). Last October it was determined that stricter global sulphur limit of 0.5 percent is to be started on 1 January 2020.

New Diesel Soot Filtration System

Problems caused by inefficient regeneration of a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) can be eliminated with the installation of a SeaClean Soot Filtration System (shown above) by marine exhaust system engineering, design, fabrication and service company DeAngelo Marine Exhaust. The SeaClean system monitors the exhaust gas temperature and varies the power going to the heater element so that exhaust gas temperatures are constant. This allows a DPF to work properly so that collected soot is burnt off at high temperature, leaving only a tiny ash residue.

The CTG Sea Sentry is a wash water monitoring system which monitors both the sensor inlet and outlet of wet exhaust gas scrubber systems. Halyard to Install Exhaust Silencers for Alicat Wind Farm Vessels

As the 2013 Seawork International Show approaches, U.K.-based marine exhaust specialist, Halyard, announced thatit has been selected by Great Yarmouth based boat builder Alicat Workboats to ensure its new four WFSV (Wind Farm Support Vessels) remain quiet on the water and to provide increased comfort for those on board. Alicat Workboats commissioned Halyard to design, build and install a full exhaust silencer system for all four of its new state-of-the-art Offshore Wind Farm Service Vessels. Alicat Workboats is constructing the four vessels (1x12m, 2x19m and 1x19m) for U.K.

Vulkan Italia, SB Broneske Start New Cooperation

Vulkan Italia has signed a cooperation with the German company SB Broneske. Vulkan Italia is going to work as a representative for SB Broneske in the Italian market, where the two companies will join their experience on the elastic support for exhaust pipe system. Elastic support for the exhaust pipe system includes vibration mounts, expansion bellows, pipe penetrations and rain caps for the exhaust pipe system of ships. Vulkan Italia, founded in 1987 and located in Novi Ligure, is the market leader in elastic support in the ship building industry in Italy. Vulkan Italia provides a superior service and deep knowledge of applications to the Italian customers. SB Broneske, founded in 1972, is inventor, designer and producer of elastic support for the exhaust pipe systems.

Wärtsilä Launches Inline Scrubber System

Wärtsilä said its new inline scrubber system is designed to offer notable benefits over conventional exhaust gas cleaning systems, and its compact form saves considerable space, which is particularly important in smaller vessels and when being retrofitted, while the lower cost structure of the new design offers CAPEX advantages. With just one scrubber system per engine, installation is faster and easier, Wärtsilä said, which consequently reduces the out-of-service time for the vessel. Operational flexibility is also improved.

Wärtsilä has received an order for Hybrid Scrubber Systems to clean the exhaust emissions from three 2,500 TEU container vessels. The installation has been ordered by a major European owner and operator and will be carried out at the Jinhai Heavy Industry Co., Ltd in China. The contract was signed in March 2015 and the systems are scheduled for delivery in December 2015. The scrubber system, which comprises two scrubber units, will be installed to clean the exhaust from both the main and auxiliary engines.

MX-Scrubber installation now up and running in full scale test facility by Marine Exhaust Technology, a dedicated Danish supplier of Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems for SOx and NOx. Wärtsilä Scrubbers for Three More Color Line Ships

Wärtsilä has been contracted to retrofit its Open Loop Scrubber systems on three additional vessels owned by Color Line, Norway's largest cruise and ferry operator. With the latest contract, Wärtsilä's now has 36 shipsets, totalling 75 scrubber units, either already installed or in the pipeline. Each vessel will be fitted with four systems designed to rid the ships' exhaust gases of harmful sulphur oxide (SOx) and particulate emissions. GE, DSIC Unveil Plan for LNG Carrier Power Conversions

(DSIC) completed a preliminary design for the conversion of a steam turbine powered LNG Carrier (LNGC) to a gas turbine-based propulsion system. The study aims at steam powered LNGCs that offer low fuel efficiency but are not ready to be retired from service. ClassNK's Guidelines for Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems

Leading classification society ClassNK announced that it has released Guidelines for Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems. These guidelines cover class safety requirements as well as safety requirements stipulated in the IMO guidelines. The MARPOL Convention Annex VI has placed phased limits on the maximum allowable amount of sulphur in fuel oils used by vessels globally, as well as stricter requirements in geographically defined emission control areas. Under the regulation, more stringent limits will be enforced over time. In the face of these more stringent limits, the industry has begun to look towards alternative solutions to the expensive low sulphur content fuel oils currently required by the regulations.

Carnival Corp. to Invest $400m in Scrubber Technology

Carnival Corporation CEO Arnold Donald announced that Carnival will significantly extend its installation of exhaust gas cleaning technology, investing $400m in the coming three years to install the technology on 70 ships across its brand, a significant jump from the 32 announced last year. DNV GL Approvals for SAACKE Scrubbers

Classification increases planning certainty for exhaust gas scrubber operators. The classification society DNV GL has certified the SAACKE exhaust gas scrubber based on soot separation using a dry process. This ensures that the innovative system, which was initially installed in 2013 on the tanker MT Levana, owned by the Carl Büttner shipping company, can now be operated without restriction. "Many scrubbers manufactured by market competitors currently operate with special permits. This means that the operator is exposed to the risk that the investment may not pay off.

Wärtsilä 20 Diesel Engine Gets a Power Upgrade

An upgraded version of the Wärtsilä 20 diesel engine features greater power density thanks to increased cylinder output. The new engine will receive its officially launch at the Marintec conference and exhibition in Shanghai, China from December 5 to 8. According to the manufacturer, the increased maximum output of the new Wärtsilä 20 will enable vessels to accommodate greater payloads or achieve faster speeds with almost the same low fuel consumption as the current version, and will also improve bollard pull capacity for tugs and support vessels.

Three container vessels on order at Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard in China for Eimskip Island ehf and Royal Arctic Line A/S will be equipped with Langh Tech hybrid scrubber systems and water treatment systems for exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). The newbuilds are of a new energy-efficient design developed by Deltamarin. The in-line scrubbers are multi-inlet installations, where the main engine and auxiliary engines are connected to the same scrubber tower. In addition, the MAN Diesel & Turbo two-stroke main engines of the newbuildings are equipped with EGR systems.
