John Deere Rolls Out Trio of Marine Engines
John Deere Power Systems has expanded its lineup with three new marine engines available for order from early 2018. The new 4.5L PowerTech 4045SFM85 offers high power to weight ratio for repowering and new vessel construction, and is ideal for planing and semi-displacement hulls, the manufacturer said. It has two ratings for light-duty commercial vessels, high-speed governmental applications and high-speed pleasure craft, which includes an M4 rating with 205 kW (275 hp) at 2,600 rpm and M5 rating with 235 kW (315 hp) at 2,800 rpm. The 4045SFM85 propulsion engine ratings will meet U.S.
Scrubbers Installed on Two NCL Vessels
Exhaust gas cleaning systems, also known as scrubbers, have been installed on two Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) ships in order to reduce air emissions. NCL says it was the first cruise line to commit to retrofitting six vessels with scrubbers and has now exceeded that commitment with a total of eight ships, including the latest two, Norwegian Sun and Norwegian Jade. The ships’ new lightweight in-line scrubbers are a hybrid technology developed by Yara Marine Technologies that are able to operate in open loop, closed loop and closed loop with bleed off mode.

Clean Marine Secures Multi-Vessel EGCS Contract
Clean Marine, developer of Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems (EGCS), has secured a multi-vessel contract from Inventor Chemical Tankers AS (ICT). The agreement, covering seven 19,900 DWT chemical tankers, marks the launch of the firm’s CleanSOx Compact Hybrid Allstream scrubber to the marketplace. According to Clean Marine CEO Nils Høy-Petersen, the company has been exclusively dedicated to EGCS solutions since its inception in 2006. “Our latest product has been designed to ensure ship owners can achieve simple, cost and space efficient compliance with the IMO’s SOx regulations, coming into force in 2020,” he said. Cat Delivers 3412C Marine Genset as a Complete MCS-Certified Package
The 3412C marine genset from Caterpillar Marine Power Systems now arrives at shipyards as a complete MCS-certified package. Vessel builders receive the ready-to-install genset as a complete package to be installed as a single component on-board in a simple “plug and play” fashion. Caterpillar provides Marine Classification Society (MCS) certification direct from its factories. Vessel builders are assured a familiar genset electrical interface that is well documented in advance, allowing the shipyard to plan the installation and be prepared for simple on-board wiring configurations. In addition, the genset arrives complete with a functionally tested alarm and protection system.
Protecting Marine Diesel Engines from Cat Fines Damage
DNVPS has warned that cat fines levels are increasing year by year. Lower sulphur marine fuels have even higher cat fines levels than typical heavy fuel oils (HFO). The ExxonMobil MobilGard lube oil monitoring service, concludes that 43 percent of all ships “have a potentially catastrophic issue with cat fines,” based on testing more than 400,000 marine diesel oil samples. So, cat fines are a very serious threat to every ship burning heavy fuel oils. What is the solution? Many have studied this serious problem, and all have come to the same basic conclusion: eliminating the 3 to 5 micron cat fines (and larger) will prevent the cat fines from damaging fuel injection pumps, fuel injectors, piston rings, pistons, cylinder liners, exhaust valve seats and stuffing box seals.
Association for Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems
The Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems Association (EGCSA) was launched March 30 to provide a sustainable operating environment within the marine industry for exhaust gas cleaning system technologies. The EGCSA has been formed from companies and organizational divisions that manufacture exhaust gas cleaning systems for the marine sector. New Diesel Soot Filtration System
Problems caused by inefficient regeneration of a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) can be eliminated with the installation of a SeaClean Soot Filtration System (shown above) by marine exhaust system engineering, design, fabrication and service company DeAngelo Marine Exhaust. The SeaClean system monitors the exhaust gas temperature and varies the power going to the heater element so that exhaust gas temperatures are constant. This allows a DPF to work properly so that collected soot is burnt off at high temperature, leaving only a tiny ash residue.

Wärtsilä Launches Inline Scrubber System
Wärtsilä said its new inline scrubber system is designed to offer notable benefits over conventional exhaust gas cleaning systems, and its compact form saves considerable space, which is particularly important in smaller vessels and when being retrofitted, while the lower cost structure of the new design offers CAPEX advantages. With just one scrubber system per engine, installation is faster and easier, Wärtsilä said, which consequently reduces the out-of-service time for the vessel. Wärtsilä Hybrid Scrubbers for 3 Box Ships
Wärtsilä has received an order for Hybrid Scrubber Systems to clean the exhaust emissions from three 2,500 TEU container vessels. The installation has been ordered by a major European owner and operator and will be carried out at the Jinhai Heavy Industry Co., Ltd in China. The contract was signed in March 2015 and the systems are scheduled for delivery in December 2015. The scrubber system, which comprises two scrubber units, will be installed to clean the exhaust from both the main and auxiliary engines.

Wärtsilä Scrubbers for Three More Color Line Ships
Wärtsilä has been contracted to retrofit its Open Loop Scrubber systems on three additional vessels owned by Color Line, Norway's largest cruise and ferry operator. ClassNK's Guidelines for Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems
Leading classification society ClassNK announced that it has released Guidelines for Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems. These guidelines cover class safety requirements as well as safety requirements stipulated in the IMO guidelines. The MARPOL Convention Annex VI has placed phased limits on the maximum allowable amount of sulphur in fuel oils used by vessels globally, as well as stricter requirements in geographically defined emission control areas. Under the regulation, more stringent limits will be enforced over time. In the face of these more stringent limits, the industry has begun to look towards alternative solutions to the expensive low sulphur content fuel oils currently required by the regulations.

DNV GL Approvals for SAACKE Scrubbers
Classification increases planning certainty for exhaust gas scrubber operators. The classification society DNV GL has certified the SAACKE exhaust gas scrubber based on soot separation using a dry process.
