Maersk Vessels Transmit Live Weather Data to Meteorologists

Container shipping giant A.P. Moller - Maersk said it has teamed up with National Meteorological Service of Germany, Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) to install automated weather stations enabling a portion of its fleet to transmit live data to help forecast weather and climate.In the largest project of its kind, A.P. Moller - Maersk (Maersk) has installed automated weather stations (AWS) on 50 of its vessels creating a pulsating oceanic web of weather and climate observations. Matson Targets Net Zero GHG Emissions by 2050

U.S.-based Matson, a carrier in the Pacific, said this week it will reduce its fleet greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 40% by 2030, and achieve net zero fleet GHG emissions by 2050.The Honolulu-headquartered company joins peers such as Denmark-based Maersk and Switzerland-based MSC on a growing list of international shipping companies to reveal decarbonization plans that go beyond the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) target to reduce overall GHG emissions from ships by 50% from 2008 levels by 2050.Shipping…

StormGeo Launches Navigator Solutions Portfolio

StormGeo launched the Navigator Solutions Portfolio, which is designed to be an integrated, navigational and route optimization platform connecting onboard solutions to shore-based decision support. The move melds with StormGeo's recent acquisition of Nautisk, a supplier of digital maritime charts and publications to the merchant marine. GAC SMHI Weather Solutions for Safer, Efficient Shipping

Forecasts and route planning tools from GAC-SMHI Weather Solutions are playing a key role in a European Union initiative to promote safer and more efficient shipping. The Sea Traffic Management (STM) Validation Project, developed by a European Consortium led by the Swedish Maritime Administration, aims to make merchant shipping safer, smoother and more efficient by tackling the fact that international shipping remains relatively unregulated. The route chosen by a ship is often unknown to other vessels – something which can increase the chances of collisions, near misses, congestion and delays. The STM projects aims to tackle that issue by exploring ways in which routing information and planning can be shared to minimise the risks.

Weathernews Inc., a privately owned weather company, will provide weather routing services, port forecasts and other weather driven risk communication services to Maersk Line and Maersk Tankers, for safety and bunker saving purposes. Klaveness Orders Weather Service for 140 Ships

Weather business MeteoGroup is to provide fleet monitoring, performance reporting and weather routing services to Norwegian shipping company Torvald Klaveness. The contract will see MeteoGroup provide its ship routing, monitoring and performance analysis service, RouteGuard, to 140 of Torvald Klaveness’ owned and managed ships. Based on weather data from MeteoGroup’s own model, Nautical MeteoBase (NMB), a team of nautical and offshore meteorologists and master mariners will be responsible for planning and optimizing routes to ensure the safe and efficient passage of Klaveness’ vessels.

GAC Singapore Moves to new HQ

GAC Singapore is marking the 30th anniversary of its establishment by relocating to a new head office to enable future expansion of its operations. The company, which has expanded its portfolio of services since its establishment as a ship agent in 1981, now employs 145 staff at four locations in Singapore, and is looking to expand further in 2012. An increase in business is expected as a result of a number of major infrastructural improvements in the pipeline for Singapore. These include a new LNG terminal on Jurong Island due to begin commercial operations in 2013, and the opening of Singapore's International Cruise Terminal (ICT) later this year.

Unicom Management Uses BVS

Applied Weather Technology, Inc. (AWT) announced that Unicom Management Services (Cyprus) Ltd has now been using its BonVoyage software (BVS) for 10 years to help its ship Captains steer clear of heavy weather in order to avoid vessel damage and prevent crew injury. After first adopting BVS in 1999 as part of a trial on three ships, SCF Unicom observed that the onboard software was helping its Captains to reduce heavy weather damage to those ships.
