UK Includes Domestic Shipping in ETS

The UK Emissions Trading Scheme Authority (UK ETS) – has announced that the scheme will be expanded to include domestic maritime transport from 2026.The scheme will be applicable to vessels of 5,000 gross tons or higher.The UK ETS is run by a joint body comprising the UK Government, Scottish Government, Welsh Government and the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs in Northern Ireland.The UK ETS was launched in 2021 to replace the UK’s participation in the EU ETS.

VIDEO: Wreck of Fishing Vessel Nicola Faith Recovered

The UK authorities have recovered the fishing vessel Nicola Faith, which had gone missing off the coast of Colwyn Bay, Wales in January, in an incident in which all three crew members died.The bodies of the three crew members Ross Ballantine, 39, Alan Minard, 20, and Carl McGrath, 34, were found in mid-March. AST Tapped to Track 400 Welsh Fishing Vessels

Applied Satellite Technology (AST) Marine Sciences said it has been awarded a three-year contract with the Welsh government to supply an advanced inshore vessel monitoring solution (iVMS) for the Welsh inshore fleet of 400 under-12-meter fishing vessels.The Welsh government are proactively future proofing their fleet in preparation for the upcoming legislation that will soon require all inshore fleets and fishers to have this technology on board.AST’s Group Managing Director, Gregory Darling said…

19m Fisheries Patrol Boat Launched

Incat Crowther announced the launch of Lady Megan, a 19m Catamaran Fisheries Patrol Vessel. Built by Mainstay Marine for the Welsh Government, Lady Megan is designed to be a robust and versatile vessel that packs immense functionality into its modest platform and is designed to operate year round in the Irish Sea.The aft working deck of Lady Megan is the epicenter of this functionality, featuring a hydraulically operated tender launch and recovery system, capable of launching and retrieving a 5m RIB while the vessel is in motion in Sea State 3.

British Ports Association Sets Priorities for 2018

The Chief Executive of the British Ports Association (BPA), Richard Ballantyne, has outlined the Association’s key priorities for 2018. These include continued interaction and influencing on the Brexit discussions, promotion of planning and freight policy reform, calls for increased transport connectivity investment and the rectification of the ‘definition of a ship’ legal anomaly. Discussions with the various parts of Westminster and the Devolved Governments on Brexit will continue to be a major feature for the ports industry this year. “2018 will be a critical for UK ports as by the end of the year we should know what Brexit will look like.

Tidal Energy from Deep and Slow Waters

Deep Green, an underwater kite construction from the Swedish company Minesto, is set to be deployed in 2017 at the Holyhead Deep site off the coast of Anglesey, Wales. Delivering a customized turbine solution in 2016 for the underwater power plant project will be SCHOTTEL HYDRO. And while the turbine complements the first full-scale Deep Green device, 19 more devices are due to follow during the coming three years and will eventually form an array with an overall capacity of 10 MW.
