Battered by Waves, British Coastguard Completes Daring Sea Rescue
A British rescue worker was battered by waves but still completed a daring sea rescue after three people got into difficulty on the west coast of England, a video released by British coastguard service on Tuesday showed. Footage shot from a helicopter showed a man clinging to a rock in the sea near Bude, 200 miles (321.87 km) southwest of London, after he became cut off by a rising tide on Saturday evening. Mark Hughes, a winchman for the coastguard who is known as "Spike", was lowered from the helicopter to save him when he was caught blindsided by a wave. Hughes reached the man and was attaching him to the wire when both were washed into the sea by a second wave. They were winched quickly out of the surf, while two other people were also rescued from a nearby beach.
Damen Books Four More Twin Axe FCS 2610 Orders
Marineco UK placed another order for two more Damen FCS 2610 Twin Axe vessels to serve its offshore wind activities, and Sure Wind, a British company specializing in the German market and new customer for Damen, has ordered two as well. The Scottish company Marineco was the first customer for the Damen Twin Axe vessel, which has become the industry standard since its introduction just over two years ago. Damen Deliver Twin-Axe OSV to Marineco
The ‘Marineco Thunderbird’ is UK-based Marineco’s fourth FCS 2610 Twin Axe to join its windfarm support fleet of vessels. Marineco was the first customer to buy one of these vessels nearly two and a half years ago, based on a design for an Offshore and Offshore Wind support vessel which Damen really believed in. The recent purchase of Thunderbird, Damen say, is proof of the concept and its future. Siemens will be deploying Thunderbird off the west coast of England, where it will be used to perform installation and maintenance work for Walney Offshore Windfarms.
Fourth High-speed Support Vessel for Marineco
The Marineco Thunderbird is U.K.-based Marineco’s fourth FCS 2610 Twin Axe. Siemens will be deploying Thunderbird off the west coast of England, at the same latitude as Barrow, where it will be used to perform installation and maintenance work for Walney Offshore Windfarms. The vessel’s superstructure is spacious, offering sleeping accommodation (four two-person cabins) and making it possible for the crew to stay on-site for longer periods of time. The FCS 2008, a smaller version of the FCS 2610 with lower fuel consumption, will be introduced on the market in the summer of 2013.
UK Tugboat in Trouble: Crew Taken Off
Eight crew members have been taken off a flooding tug boat a mile off Hope’s Nose, Torbay, on the south-west coast of England. The UK's Maritime and Coastguard Agency reports that the tugboat began taking water after it collided with the vessel on tow. Nearby Brixham Coastguard has been coordinating the rescue operation after the collision in the dark on Sunday evening. The RNLI Torbay all-weather lifeboat and the Exmouth all-weather lifeboat were sent to the scene, along with a local harbour tug from Brixham, the Royal Navy vessels HMS Lancaster and HMS Severn, the RAF search and rescue helicopter from Chivenor and the Torbay Coastguard Rescue Team. Efforts are being made to keep the tug afloat with a salvage crew from the Royal Navy on board, equipped with pumps.
