New Pilot Boat Arrives in Port of Bunbury

Southern Ports’ new pilot boat Wardan has arrived in Bunbury, Western Australia, for local testing and trials ahead of an official naming ceremony to be held early next year.The boat, built by Hart Marine, combines top-tier technology, safety and comfort in a lightweight structure that renders the vessel resistant to corrosion, guaranteeing longevity and resilience in the harshest of marine conditions.Southern Ports Chief Executive Officer Keith Wilks acknowledged the exciting milestone for the Port of Bunbury’s fleet.

McLean Contracting Company Acquires Shugart Manufacturing

Maryland-headquartered heavy civil and marine contractor McLean Contracting Company announced it has acquired South Carolina-based Shugart Manufacturing, designer and builder of sectional barges, barge propulsion units and accessories, screeds, barge ramps, bridge steel, concrete forms, and other miscellaneous equipment and materials for marine and construction use.The asset purchase agreement is effective as of December 30, 2021.Prior Shugart owner and president Donnie Wilks will stay on with McLean to direct the division.

Newcastle Bulk Terminal Reaches Key Milestone

Australia’s new east coast supply chain alternative Port of Newcastle has marked an important milestone in the development of the Newcastle Bulk Terminal.A press release from the company said that the dismantling of the old ship unloaders is now complete, with bulk cargo hoppers now in place to provide continuity of trade while the new ship unloader and conveyor system is constructed.The old ship unloaders at the Kooragang 2 berth have been a feature of the Walsh Point precinct since 1968. The two rail mounted ship unloaders were established at what was then known as 'Rotten Row' to handle dry bulk products including fertiliser, rock phosphatic, ores and meals.

The InfraCal Soot Meter, from Wilks, provides users with a rapid, onsite ASTM Method D7686 for measuring soot concentration levels in diesel engine oils. Soot levels as high as 12-15% are easily measured in 30 seconds. This Day in Coast Guard History – September 1

1789-An act of Congress provided for the registering and clearing of vessels and the regulation of the coastwise trade, thus laying the foundation of American navigation laws which, until 1912, embodied the marine policy of the United States. 1894-An armed guard of Revenue Cutter Service personnel were placed on the Pribiloff Islands to protect seals. 1938-The Coast Guard assumed responsibility for the Maritime Service. 1939-The armed forces of Nazi Germany invaded Poland, beginning World War II. 1942- On 1 September 1942 Joseph C. Jenkins was given a temporary promotion to warrant officer (Boatswain); becoming the first African-American warrant officer in the Coast Guard.
