Marshall Islands To Combat Money Laundering

At a time when the actions of open registries and offshore jurisdictions are under unprecedented scrutiny, the Republic of the Marshall Islands is demonstrating its resolve and commitment to transparency and accountability by accepting an invitation to join the Egmont Group. The Egmont Group is an international network of financial intelligence units set up to promote global communication to prevent and investigate money laundering and the financial background of known and suspected terrorists, including open ship registries, some of which, in the past, have been allegedly involved in dubious financial transactions. Marshall Islands Observe ISM Code Before Deadline

The Marshall Islands can confirm that all vessels on its ships register affected by Phase II of the International Safety Management (ISM) code were in full compliance ahead of the July 1 deadline. Those vessels registered with the Marshall Islands that do not comply with ISM are exempt by virtue of the Safety Of Life At Sea (SOLAS) compliance definitions, are in lay-up or have been foreign bareboat charter registered in another flag-state jurisdiction. The 2001 annual report of the Paris Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control (Paris MOU) has put the safety records of flag states back in the spotlight once again when it showed that safety management deficiencies on vessels have risen by 150% in three years.

Osprey Crew Commended by Marshall Islands

The rescue of all 22 crew members of a foundering ship, carried out in difficult conditions in the Arabian Sea, has earned the master and crew of the VLCC Osprey a certificate of commendation from the register's maritime administrator for "outstanding seamanship and courage". The Osprey, a Marshall Islands registered, 1999 built double-hull tanker of 284,893 dwt, is operated by International Marine Transportation Ltd., an Exxon Mobil Corporation subsidiary company and is manned by British officers and a Filipino crew. Her master is Captain Stephen Williams. "Captain Williams and his crew did a magnificent job in difficult conditions", said William Gallagher, president of International Registries, Inc., which runs the Marshall Islands register.
