A new multipurpose 5,450m3 trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) was officially named and launched during a ceremony on January 11 at Royal IHC’s shipyard in Krimpen aan den IJssel, The Netherlands. Stricken Iranian Oil Tanker Keeps Exploding
The stricken Iranian oil tanker Sanchi keeps exploding, hampering efforts to extinguish the fire and rescue survivors, state media Xinhua said on Friday, citing the Ministry of Transport, as the blaze raged and worries grew the ship may break up and sink. The week-long rescue effort following the tanker's collision with a freight ship on Saturday night has been roiled by poor weather, including 3-metre (10 feet) high waves and strong winds, and toxic fumes from the burning oil. Dozens of the rescue boats were forced to retreat from dousing the tanker with foam on Wednesday due to an explosion.

A sunken Iranian oil tanker may be leaking heavy bunker fuel as well as light oil off the east coast of China and the best remedy was to recover the vessel, officials said on Friday. AMSC, HHI Expand Wind Power Alliance
American Superconductor Corporation, a global power technologies company, and South Korea-based Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (Korean Stock Exchange: HHI) announced that they have expanded their strategic alliance to include the joint development of a five megawatt (MW) full conversion wind turbine primarily for use in the burgeoning offshore wind industry. Under the terms of the alliance, the five MW wind turbine design will be jointly developed by HHI and AMSC's wholly-owned AMSC Windtec(TM) subsidiary. Once HHI begins volume production of the wind turbines, which is expected to commence by the end of 2011, HHI will purchase power electronic components for the five MW wind turbines from AMSC.
Bluewater Wants to Bring Offshore Wind Farm to Del.
Bluewater Wind, a developer of off-shore wind energy, is one of the companies competing for a long-term energy contract with Delmarva Power. Delmarva Power is requesting a proposal for an energy provider to help stabilize the price of energy in the state. Bluewater Wind is one of the companies competing for the contract, along with NRG, which has proposed expanding its coal facility on the Indian River Bay. Delmarva Power will choose an energy company in November. Bluewater Wind is proposing building as many as three wind farms that would generate a total of 600 megawatts of energy. While the price of fuel is free, the price of building the windmills will come to about $800 or $900 million. The University has been studying the wind off the coast of Delaware for 20 years.
America's First Offshore Wind Farm Project – Ramboll Leads
Danish-based international company Ramboll will as leader of a consortium with U.S. based companies design the foundations for the Cape Wind Offshore Wind Farm. The consortium expects more US offshore wind projects to be on the way. America's first offshore wind farm will also be one of the world's largest. With its 130 offshore wind turbines, each with a 3.6 megawatt capacity, Cape Wind Offshore Wind Farm will be situated off Cape Cod in the state of Massachusetts on the US east coast. When completed, the turbines will be able to produce electrical power for up to 500,000 households. Concerns about how the turbines would impact the local environment have for years held off investments in offshore wind farms in the US.

Vattenfall: Subsidy-free Offshore Wind by 2025
Sweden's Vattenfall expects to be able to build offshore wind power projects, one of the most expensive sources of renewable energy, without subsidies by the middle of the next decade, a senior company official said on Thursday. The state-owned utility plans to boost its wind power portfolio in Europe to 4 gigawatts (GW), equivalent to four nuclear reactors, by 2020 from the current installed 1.8 GW, and further to 7 GW by 2025. "We should be able to build onshore wind power projects by 2020 without subsidy, and we also expect that we could build offshore wind power without subsidy by 2025, but that would depend on the projects," Michael Simmelsgaard, head of Vattenfall's strategic projects in wind, told a conference.
AMSC Continues Sales Growth in Wind Energy Market
American Superconductor Corporation has received new orders for its D-VAR voltage regulation systems for wind farms in Northern Ireland and Texas. With these additional orders, AMSC now has an installed base and orders for D-VAR and PowerModule solutions to serve more than 2,900 megawatts (MW) of wind power worldwide - nearly triple the amount served by AMSC 12 months ago. According the British Wind Energy Association, the installed base of wind generated electricity in the United Kingdom rose 48 percent in 2006 to 1,963 MW. Stankiewicz noted that the new Texas wind farm installation for which the company received a D-VAR order was determined by the local transmission grid owner to require dynamic reactive support to maintain voltage stability when the wind farm is connected to the grid.

First Wind Turbine Installed at Gemini Offshore Wind Park
The first wind turbine has been installed at the Gemini offshore wind park, off the coast of the Netherlands. The wind park will be completed in 2017, and will supply 785,000 households with renewable energy. The SOV, Yno 309, currently under construction at Ulstein Verft, will be servicing this park. On February 16, 2016, the first wind turbine was installed by Van Oord at the Gemini Offshore Wind Park, and it will soon begin producing electricity. In the coming months, a total of 150 wind turbines will be installed 85 kilometers off the coast of Groningen, the Netherlands.

Oil from Sunken Iranian Tanker Diffusing in East China Sea
Oil from an Iranian tanker that sank in the East China Sea has diffused into four separate slicks, covering a combined area of just over 100 square kms (39 square miles), Chinese authorites said late on Wednesday. Earlier satellite imaging showed two large slicks, with the larger one also thicker and more concentrated, but the latest data had found four slicks ranging in size from 48 square kms (19 square miles) to 5.5 square kms (2.1 square miles), the State Oceanic Administration (SOA) said.
