World Fishing Fleet: Vietnam Grows the Fleet
In keeping with their reputation as a nation that can overcome all obstacles, Vietnam is rebuilding its aging fishing fleet. With a government program of soft loans, designated Decree 67/ND-CP, fishermen are building boats along 28 coastal provinces from the north to the south of Vietnam. Capt. Trinh Van Hung, grew up in a fishing family and, after completing his schooling, he fished briefly with his father. His curiosity took him into business as a trader but the call of the sea was strong. At 25, he returned to the fishing.
Landing School Receives Grant from Collectors Foundation
The Landing School, a post-secondary institution focused on educating tomorrow's marine industry professionals, announced they have received a grant from the Collectors Foundation, an educational grant-making organization founded by Hagerty Insurance and funded by classic vehicle and boat enthusiasts. The Landing School first received grant money from the Collectors Foundation in 2005. Since then, the Foundation has granted $50,000 to The Landing School, which in turn has helped 50 students achieve their goal of attaining a diploma or associate degree through The Landing School. Green Joins Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum
Joe Green of Portland, Ore. has joined the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) in St. Michaels, Md. as a shipwright apprentice. With an associate’s degree in wooden boat building from the Northwest School of Wooden Boat Building in Port Hadlock, Washington, Green will primarily work on the restoration of the Museum’s bugeye, the Edna E. Crowley Awards Scholarship
Iris Lowery, from Washington, DC, a student in the maritime studies program of Williams College and Mystic Seaport, has been named as a recipient of a Thomas B. Crowley, Sr. Memorial Scholarship, which is presented annually at the institution by Crowley Maritime Corporation. Lowery was selected based on academic success, financial need, and her interest in maritime trades and studies. In addition to participating in the Williams-Mystic program, Lowery is a junior majoring in Human Ecology at College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine. Additionally, Lowery has strong skills in boatbuilding. She graduated with an associate's degree from Northwest School of Wooden Boat Building before continuing her studies at College of the Atlantic where she is pursuing her bachelor's degree.
