Working Harbor Committee to Screen "Liemba!"
The Working Harbor Committee is presenting a screening of the documentary film "Liemba!" on Tuesday, March 31 at the Community Church of NY. The screening will feature special guest speaker James Wong, Director of Ferries, NYC Economic Development Corp. "Liemba!" is a documentary on the history and significance of the 100-year old historic vessel MV Liemba, a ferry connecting communities and people with work on the great Lake Tanganyika, the second largest freshwater lake in the world. The lake is divided among four countries, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and Zambia.
Great North River Tugboat Race and Competition
More than 15 tugboats are expected to participate in the Working Harbor Committee’s annual Great North River Tugboat Race and Competition Sunday, August 31 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The race features nose-to-nose pushing contests and a line-throwing competition by tugboat crew members. FILM EVENT: America’s Women Seafarers Tell Their Stories

This special Women at Sea program features a screening of the documentary “Shipping Out – The Story of America’s Seafaring Women” followed by a conversation with seven women mariners who work as mates aboard cargo ships, tug captains, marine engineers, pilots, port officials and more. Some got jobs by pretending they were men; others sailed as captains’ wives and took command of ships when their husbands were unable.
Annual Great North River Tugboat Race
<p>Fifteen to 20 tugboats, the maritime 18-wheelers that normally dock ships and push barges, will roar down the Hudson River Sunday morning, September 5, as they vie to be named the fastest boat in their class. The race typically draws thousands of spectators, which is one of the reasons the tug companies enjoy participating. <br /> <br /> “New Yorkers sometimes forget they are surrounded by water and that there is a whole maritime industry working here. This tug competition is the one time a year people can really see what we do,” said Craig Rising of McAllister Towing and Transportation, one of the largest and oldest tug companies in the country. It is also a field day for the tug crews, many of whom bring their families aboard.
