Shipowners' Club on Mayflower Autonomous Ship

The Shipowners' Club has revelead details about Mayflower Autonomous Ship project (MAS), which is an innovative new venture to design, build and sail the world’s first fully autonomous vessel across the Atlantic Ocean. The project’s name commemorates the anniversary of the Pilgrim Father’s voyage from Plymouth, UK to Plymouth in the New World (USA) on the original Mayflower in 1620. To mark the anniversary, marine tech company MSubs, Plymouth University and charitable research foundation Promare, are developing a 21-metre autonomous vessel based on a classic Oyster hull.

World's First Floating Resort To Sale In 2001

The world's first ocean-going luxury resort is scheduled to be afloat late in 2001 now that Bahamas-registered ResidenSea has secured financing and found a builder, according to company officials. The vessel for the rich, dubbed The World of ResidenSea, was conceived four years ago by Norwegian cruise magnate Knut Kloster Jr. Flagging cruise line share prices coupled with turmoil in the world financial market over the past few years prompted the firm to cut the size and cost of the ship to 40,000 tons at $350 million from an initial 86,000 tons at $545 million.

Storage Tanks Installed on World’s First FLNG

Wison Offshore & Marine reports that it successfully completed the installation of the three LNG storage tanks into the hull of the Caribbean FLNG project, considered a significant  milestone in the delivery of the world’s first floating LNG production unit. With this major activity completed, the pathway is clear for installing the barge deck and topsides on the project. The Caribbean FLNG project, being supplied to EXMAR by Wison Offshore & Marine under an EPCIC contract, will be installed off the coast of Colombia.

First LNG Containership Receives ME-GI Engine

Late last month, NASSCO engineers placed the world’s first dual-fuel slow speed engine into the World’s First Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) powered containership. The ME-GI engine represents the next generation of technology that will open the door to a cleaner and safer shipping industry, particularly in the United States. Doosan Engine built the 8L70ME-C8.2GI under license from the designer MAN Diesel and Turbo. The engine weighs 539 tons. TOTE Shipholdings, Inc., a subsidiary of TOTE, is the first company to use these engines in their vessels.

ABS Updates Guidance on LNG Bunkering

ABS has updated its guidance on LNG Bunkering in North America to support the transport sector's increasingly rapid transition to the use of cleaner fuels. The second edition of ABS' Bunkering of Liquefied Natural Gas-fueled Marine Vessels in North America was released today, offering new market-leading advice to shipowners and operators who may be looking to develop bunkering infrastructure in response to new emissions regulations and showcase their environmental stewardship.

ABS Issues LNG Bunkering Advisory

Report explores the benefits and challenges of natural gas power from the perspective of fuel providers and operators. Classification society ABS published a new Advisory about LNG Bunkering in response to the industry's growing interest in gas propulsion, LNG Bunkering: Technical and Operational Advisory, exploring the benefits, challenges and solutions associated with fuelling vessels equipped with LNG power systems. The report is available to the public through the ABS website, www.eagle.org. "Ship owners, operators, designers and shipyards around the world are considering the advantages that operating on natural gas may provide," said Roy Bleiberg, ABS' Director of Global Gas Solutions.

Global Inmarsat Fleet Service Launched

On April 1, Xantic became the world’s first company to offer the new maritime Inmarsat Fleet 77 service globally. It is also the first provider to have its service commercially approved for global operations by Inmarsat. It is the service’s availability via the company’s Burum (Netherlands) and Perth (Australia) Land Earth Stations that allow Xantic to become the first LESO to offer a fully global Inmarsat Fleet service, spanning all four Inmarsat ocean regions. Approval for commercial operation was granted by Inmarsat at the end of March following a successful and extensive test program. MOL Bulker is the First Built with Safer Hull

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) announced the world’s first use of highly ductile steel plate NSafe-Hull, developed by Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation on a merchant vessel. The ship featuring this new safety-enhancing feature, a large-size bulk carrier, was launched on August 2. The NSafe-Hull’s highly ductile steel reportedly absorbs side impact to the hull three times more effectively than conventional steel plate, reducing the risk of cracks in the hull and significantly increasing the safety of the vessel, MOL said.

Great Ships of 2016: M/V Auto Eco

Since it started publishing in 1939, Maritime Reporter & Engineering News has recognized excellence in ship construction. United European Car Carriers (UECC), which is jointly owned by Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and Wallenius Lines, held a naming ceremony for the M/V Auto Eco, a s historic ship in that it is the first of two dual fuel LNG PCTCs with 1A Super Finnish/Swedish ice class. The world’s first dual fuel LNG PCTC M/V Auto Eco had her formal naming ceremony at the Port of Zeebrugge, Belgium on November 21, 2016.

First LNG-fueled Aframax Tankers Ordered

Hyundai Heavy Industries’ shipbuilding affiliate Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI) said it recently won a $240 million order to build four 114,000 DWT Ice-Class IA aframax tankers from Sovcomflot, the Russia’s state-owned shipping company. The vessels are said to be the world’s first LNG-fueled aframax tankers, and will measure 250 meters in length, 44 meters in width and 21 meters in height. They are scheduled to be delivered from the third quarter of 2018 and to be chartered to Shell.

ABS to Class the First Very Large Ethane Carrier

ABS, a provider of classification services to the maritime and offshore industries, has been chosen to class the world's first contracted series of very large ethane carriers (VLECs). The class contract for the ships, which will be built in Korea by Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) for an Asian shipowner, represents another gas ship milestone for ABS. "We are delighted to have received the class contract for the world's first large ethane carriers," says ABS Vice President of Global Gas Solutions Patrick Janssens. "As a result of the shale gas boom in the US, ethane is developing as an exciting new market with great potential, requiring the development of new ship types. The contract is for six 87,000 m3 VLECs and available options.

New World First Ferry Orders Two Ferries

Austal and New World First Ferry Services (Macau) Limited (First Ferry (Macau)) ordered two new high-speed catamarans for operation between Macau and Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong. With five Austal 155.8-ft. high speed passenger catamarans already in service, the new ferries will be almost identical to the original design. The ferries are said to be optimized for service speeds in excess of 42 knots and the comfortable carriage of 418 passengers with numerous passenger amenities. The new ferries are scheduled to enter service in 2008 to meet the growing tourism demand generated from the remarkable increase in the Macau's tourist arrivals since the development of the gaming and mega-resort industry and the extension of Individual Visitor Scheme.

Wison Offshore & Marine Announces Award for construction of World’s First Floating LNG Liquefaction Unit. Shanghai-based Wison Offshore & Marine Ltd., a subsidiary of the Wison Group, announced today the successful award of a contract by the Exmar group for engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning (EPCIC) of the world’s first Floating LNG Liquefaction, Regasification and Storage Unit (FLRSU). The facility will be used by Exmar under a Build, Own, and Operate contract with Pacific Rubiales Energy Corporation, and located on the Caribbean coast offshore Colombia.

World's First Barge-based FSRU Exits Dry Dock

The world’s first barge-based Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) has undocked from dry-dock in Nantong, China, announced Wison Offshore & Marine, who provided EPC services for Exmar. Upon the undocking, topside installation has been completed, which paves the way for delivery. This is the first FSRU being built in China and the facility is to become the world’s first FSRU with small-scale storage capacity. This non-propelled FSRU barge has a regasification capacity of 600MMSCFD. Two SPB cargo tanks, each with a capacity of 12,500 m3, are installed in the hull for LNG storage.

First Ferry Vessels Approach Completion

The first of two 47.5 metre passenger catamaran ferries for New World First Ferry (Macau) has been launched at Austal , marking a  milestone for the shipyard. With new orders for the shipyard currently being finalized and a workforce which has grown from 40 to more than 120 during the past 12 months, the inaugural launch signals the emergence of Austal as a significant member of Austal’s global production capacity. Located in , south of Tasmanian capital , the modern shipbuilding facility was purchased by Austal in February 2007 and boasts a history of quality aluminium ship construction.

Keppel FLNG MOSS Vessel Conversion Contract Activated

Keppel Shipyard says that the contract it entered into earlier with Golar Hilli Corporation to perform the world's first-of-its-type conversion of an existing Moss LNG carrier, the Hilli, into a Floating Liquefaction Vessel (FLNGV), has become effective. The contract is worth approximately US$735 million. In carrying out the FLNGV conversion, Keppel Shipyard explains that it shall be responsible for the provision of the design, detailed engineering and procurement of the marine systems and all of the conversion-related construction services.

DONG Energy has decided to retire “Vindeby”, the world’s first offshore wind farm, which 25 years ago marked the birth of the offshore wind industry. Today, offshore wind is a recognised and proven renewable energy technology, and the offshore wind turbines harvest the energy from the wind, transforming it into green power for millions of households. But it is actually only some 25 years ago that the world's first offshore wind farm was constructed close to shore in the low waters off Vindeby near Lolland in the south east of Denmark.

First Electronic Container Freight Swap Settled in USD

Saxo Bank and ICAP Shipping Involved in World's First Electronic Container Freight Swap Settled in USD. Saxo Bank, the trading and investment specialist, and ICAP Shipping, the shipping arm of ICAP plc, announced on Thursday that they were involved in the execution of the world's first electronic, voice-assisted trade of a container freight swap agreement settled in US dollars. The counterparties to the trade were Saxo Bank in Denmark as the buyer and a Netherlands-based trading house as the seller. ICAP Shipping was the broker of the trade. The container freight swap agreement was executed on ICAP's Webtrader platform, with manual input from ICAP Shipping brokers and cleared by LCH.Clearnet. The trade was executed by rugby star Lawrence Dallaglio during ICAP's 19th annual Charity Day.

RINA Group to Project-Manage Indonesian FSRU

Italy-based RINA Group will deliver concept selection, FEED, support during negotiations with potential shipyards, project management during construction, and support for commissioning for a new floating LNG FSRU terminal in South Sumatra, Indonesia. RINA has been appointed by PGAS Solution, a subsidiary of PGN, Indonesia’s largest natural gas distribution company, which will own and operate the FSRU. The Floating Storage and Regasification Unit is to serve as an LNG importing hub for PGN in South Sumatra and will have a storage capacity of 170…

A shipbuilding first was recorded with Exmar took delivery of the world's first barge-based FSRU and secures long-term employment for the unit. Final delivery of the world’s first barge-based floating LNG storage and re-gasification unit (FSRU) from the Wison Shipyard in Nantong, China.
