New Navy Contract
Swiftships Shipbuilders, LLC, Morgan City, La., is being awarded a $180,998,189 fixed-price letter contract for the detail design and construction of nine patrol boats and associated equipment and services for the Iraq Navy. This contract is in support of Foreign Military Sales (FMS) Case IQ –P-SAZ and U.S. Case E4-P-LBT. The contract is for nine Swiftships model 35PB1208E-1455 patrol boats along with six 30mm gun weapons systems, machine gun mounts and cradles, spare parts, and contractor engineering technical services. Work will be performed in Morgan City, La., (60 percent), Detroit, Mich., (30 percent), Ocean Springs, Miss., (8 percent) and Charlottesville, Va., (2 percent) and is expected to be completed by August 2012.
ADT Funded Courses Still Available
This two week course is designed for E5 and above, or E4 personnel who have taken the Store keeper basic course. The course will assist Storekeepers in regaining skills that may not have been practiced during drill weekend due to non-availability of training platform. Designed for E5 and above, and E4 who have taken the Yeoman (Basic). The purpose of the course is to provide students at the E5/E6 level with training that will refresh their basic Yeoman skills and introduce them to materials specific to the requirements for the next Advancement examination. By providing organized and intensive training, students can make practical application of current Navy administrative concepts and procedures under limited supervision.

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises say that their expedition ship 'Hanseatic' has set a new record for passenger ships in the Northeast Passage, when the 122.8-metre-long ship reached the northernmost point at 85°, 40.7'N and 135°, 39.6' E. Captain Thilo Natke comments: “Unusual ice conditions made this record possible. SHIPMATES Aims to Raise Ship Repair Efficiency
Shipyards used to repair and convert existing vessels are set to become more efficient and environmentally friendly with the help of a grant of E2,151,000 from the EU¡¦s Framework Program. SHIPMATES (SHIPrepair to Maintain Transport which is Environmentally Sustainable) is a three year project to provide a blueprint for a technologically advanced and environmentally friendly ship repair/conversion yards, with a target of a 20 percent productivity improvement over today¡¦s European yards. ¡§As an activity, repair and conversion has more of the characteristics of a service industry than manufacturing¡¨, says project coordinator Karl Ward, of the Shipbuilders & Ship Repairers Association. ¡§Relative to shipbuilding, it is high volume work with a rapid turnaround and is highly unpredictable.
Germanischer Lloyd Certifies SimulationX
ITI GmbH today announced that for the first time a marine application of the interdisciplinary simulation software SimulationX has passed Germanischer Lloyd’s (GL) type approval certification. The SimulationX software module marine propeller for the calculation of ice impact induced loads on the powertrain was designed and developed by ITI in collaboration with GL in accordance with the specifications laid down by GL, the Finnish-Swedish Maritime Administration and the IACS. The software certification conducted by GL proves the software’s high quality standards and is evidence of ITI’s commitment to safe, reliable and energy efficient ship propulsion systems.
Bollinger Modifies Vessel For Deeper Dredging
Two Bollinger shipyards have teamed to increase the dredging depth of the Pine Bluff Sand and Gravel Co. dustpan dredge, Wallace Mcgeorge, from 62-ft. to 75-ft., enabling it to dredge at higher river stages and dispatch sooner on a falling river. In the process, Bollinger Quick Repair, Harvey, La., fabricated and installed 45-ton, 36-ft. by 20-ft., port and starboard sections to the horn of the dredge, increasing the vessel’s overall length from 252.5 feet to 288.5 ft. The shipyard then installed a new 46-ton, 40-ft. wide by 15-ft. by 30-ft. high, A-frame which it had pre-fabricated for the dredge. The A-frame, which more closely resembles an inverted “U”…
