As attention increasingly turns to ocean health and sustainability, an innovative new fish farm solution was deployed earlier this year when the De Maas’ Semi-submersible Spar Fish Farm (SSFF) became the world’s first offshore farm installed at an open ocean location exposed to tropical storms. MTR recently visited – virtually – with co-founder Philip Schreven for insight on the design and operation particulars of their innovation.How did you became involved in this unique niche of the maritime industry?Mark van Leeuwen and I founded De Maas in 2007 as an offshore oil and gas services company.

MAN Energy Solutions’ marine liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel-gas-system manufacturer MAN Cryo has inked a deal to supply the LNG fuel-gas supply systems for two icebreaking roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) newbuilds being built at Yantai Raffles shipyard in China for Swedish shipping line Wallenius SOL. China Offshore Oil Engineering Corporation (COOEC) signed a contract with SpecTec Asia Pacific East Ltd, SpecTec Group Hong Kong subsidiary. The contract is relevant to the supply of AMOS Maintenance and Procurement modules for six Offshore Support Vessels, two pipelay vessels and one crane barge. AMOS M&P will integrate management of maintenance work and costs, stock control and purchasing onboard the vessel. One of the vessels included in the contract is COOEC first flagship deep-water pipe-laying vessel, the Haiyangshiyou 201. The vessel will be used on CNOOC’s deep-water pipelay service duties at Husky’s Liwan 13-1 Gas Field in the South China Sea.

According to a Jan. 4 report from the Moscow Times, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin announced plans for the state-run United Shipbuilding Corporation to build two major infrastructure projects with foreign partners, with investments of a combined $700m. Putin also said the government had created a $5b plan for the purchase of civilian ships and related technology in the Far East through 2020. The first infrastructure project, with Singapore’s Yantai Raffles Shipyard, will create a new shipyard to build drilling platforms in Chazhma Bay. The second is with South Korea’s Daewoo to construct a dry dock at the existing Zvezda factory in the nearby town of Bolshoi Kamen to make tankers, including for liquefied natural gas. After building five diesel-electric platform supply vessels (PSVs) at Singapore’s Yantai Raffles Shipyard, Tidewater is having additional vessels built in China. Currently the firm has 12 Cummins-powered diesel-electric vessels on order at the Fujian Mawei Shipbuilding yard. An additional four-boat order is being completed at the Shejiang Shipbuilding Company yard near Ningbo China. The first of the vessels, the Desoto Tide, was delivered in January ‘09 with the second, the Gubert Tide, receiving extra outfitting at Tidewater’s Hong Kong facility in late April.

Remedial Offshore announced the purchase of V228 medium-speed diesel engines from GE Marine to power the new Remedial Offshore Elevating Support Vessels (ESVs). Reportedly the world’s first self-propelled, 325-foot nominal water depth-rated jack-up well intervention vessel, Remedial Offhore’s ESV design provides a hybrid between a jack-up drilling rig and a marine vessel. The new ESV concept offers versatility and operational functionality, ranging from an incorporated electric well workover package to a large open deck for offshore support functions.

Yantai Raffles Shipyard is pleased to announced that Klyne Tugs ( Lowestoft ) Limited, UK have placed an order with the shipyard to build a repeat UT719-T 67m Anchor Handling Towing Supply Vessel. The contract was signed on November 23 in Yantai by Carl Beare,managing director of Klyne Tugs and Brian Chang – Chairman/CEO of Yantai Raffles Shipyard. “ We are extremely pleased to receive a repeat order from Klyne Tugs and it is our desire to deliver once again a quality vessel. Stewart & Stevenson Services, Inc., New Orleans, La., has shipped the first four of 20 marine models of General Motors totally new EMD 16-265H diesel engines and generators to Yantai Raffles Shipyard PTE, LTD in China for installation in the MV John P. LABORDE. It is the first of five new 282-ft., diesel electric anchor handling/tug supply boats (AH/TS) under construction for Tidewater Marine, Inc., New Orleans, La. The four EMD generator sets in each vessel will produce a total of 24,000 hp (or 17,200 kilowatts of electrical power) required for the boats’ diesel-electric propulsion, dynamic positioning, winching, towing and other systems as well as hotel loads. The generator sets utilize generators manufactured by the Baylor Division of National Oilwell, LP of Houston, Texas.

Kawasaki Heavy Industries has expanded with the addition of a new service center to its worldwide network for marine machinery. Established in the New Orleans area to support Kawasaki's marine propulsion systems, the new operation is end result of an agreement with AmClyde Engineered Products Company - to utilize AmClyde's parts and service center in Covington, La. Kawasaki supplied a set of four propulsion thrusters for Tidewater's ROV support vessel Nautical Tide. The equipment package was comprised of two azimuth thrusters for main propulsion, one tunnel bow thruster and one retractable azimuth bow thruster. The vessel was constructed at Yantai-Raffles Shipyard in China under subcontract from the company's U.S.-based partner - Friede Goldman Halter.

Awilco Offshore ASA (AWO) has been awarded an option to build a possible fifth semi submersible drilling rig at Yantai Raffles Shipyard. The option can be exercised until end December 2008, and would have a building period of 33 months from exercise. The additional option has been awarded AWO as part of an agreement with the yard to reschedule the delivery of the first rig, WilPioneer with 3 months to October 2008. AWO announced in the second quarter report that such a 3 months longer building period was expected.

Dockwise Yacht Transport , a group company of Dockwise, recently merged with Sealift Ltd, has christened the largest and most modern yacht carrier in the world. The vessel has been built at the Yantai Raffles Shipyard in China. The 687.5-foot (209 meter) Yacht Express is purpose-built with a semi-submersible dock bay that allows yachts of any size to be safely floated on and off as cargo. Dockwise is considered the global leader in maritime transports of extremely large and heavy cargoes. Dockwise Yacht Transport LLC (DYT), which also operates four other semi-submersible yacht carriers, is based in Fort Lauderdale, USA.

Dockwise Yacht Transport (DYT), the world's only float-on/float-off yacht transport service, has launched its newest ship, which will provide yacht owners with faster and more frequent delivery of their luxury power and sailing yachts across the Atlantic Ocean. The 685.7-ft. (209 m) Yacht Express, built at the Yantai Raffles Shipyard in China, has an official delivery date of May, 2007. It will be the largest vessel of its kind in the world, purpose-built with a semi-submersible dock bay that allows yachts of any size to be safely floated on and off as cargo. Yacht Express will join four other dedicated yacht carriers, all semi-submersible, in the existing liner service of DYT.

Three offshore, ship and tug design and technical consulting companies have joined forces to provide a new one-stop resource for oil companies, offshore operators, tug owners, ports and shipyards. Offshore Ship Designers, based in Ijmuiden, the Netherlands, bring together the skills, experience, innovation and workforce of naval architects and engineers of Dutch companies Sea of Solutions BV, WorldWise Marine BV and UK-based IMT Marine Consultants. The formation of Offshore Ship Designers follows the acquisition of the majority shareholding in IMT by Sea of Solutions and WorldWise Marine, which was completed at the end of 2006. IBM and Dassault Systemes (DS) announced that PLM solutions from IBM and Dassault Systemes are driving a multi-national collaborative global design and manufacturing oil platform project that includes China-based Yantai Raffles Shipyard, Norwegian offshore technology company Sevan Marine, and Brazil's state-run oil company, Petrobras. The complex Sevan Stabilized Platform (SSP) 300 project, wherein Yantai Raffles builds the Sevan Marine-designed oil platform, utilizes Catia, Enovia and Delmia from Dassault Systemes. The Yantai-built SSP 300s will be deployed by its customer Petrobras. Until recently, the offshore industry opted for retrofitted oil tankers as offshore storage and production facilities.

IBM and Dassault Systems announced that PLM solutions from IBM and Dassault Systems are driving a multi-national collaborative global design and manufacturing oil platform project that includes China-based Yantai Raffles Shipyard, Norwegian offshore technology company Sevan Marine, and Brazil's state-run oil company, Petrobras. The complex Sevan Stabilized Platform (SSP) 300 project, wherein Yantai Raffles builds the Sevan Marine-designed oil platform, utilizes CATIA, ENOVIA and DELMIA from Dassault Systemes and epitomizes the advantages that PLM brings to worldwide industry, according to Brian Chang, CEO, Yantai Raffles Shipyard. The Yantai-built SSP 300s will be deployed by its customer Petrobras.

Volvo Penta has received an order from Consafe Offshore for the delivery of diesel powered gensets to the Safe Bristolia accommodation platform. The gensets were ordered by Swedish Consafe Offshore, which for the first time will be installing so called high-speed (1500 rpm) gensets equipped with Volvo Penta engines. The order comprises four complete gensets, of which three are powered by Volvo Penta’s 65-liter D65 engine and one by a 49-liter D49 model. The total power output is 6 Mwe. The gensets will be delivered in December to the Yantai Raffles Shipyard in China where the Safe Bristolia is currently being rebuilt. After the rebuild, the Safe Bristolia will be stationed in the Sakhalin II oilfield in Russia.

Wärtsilä Corporation was awarded a contract in November 2005 by Yantai Raffles Shipyard in China to supply the main engines, thrusters and associated ancillary equipment for the new offshore semi-submersible platform "ORS Pioneer". Wärtsilä will deliver six Wärtsilä 32 diesel engines and motor-driven steerable thrusters together with various ancillary equipment. The main engines have a combined power of 29 MW. This new offshore platform has been contracted at the Yantai Raffles Shipyard by the Norwegian company Offshore Rig Services AS. The platform has been designed by Global Maritime AS in Norway. It is a multipurpose, mobile platform suitable for various offshore operations including drilling and well intervention. It is due to be delivered in the first quarter of 2008.

Yantai Raffles Shipyard, in conjunction with prime contractor Friede Goldman Halter, has garnered a $109 million order from China National Offshore Oil Corp. (CNOOC) to construct a 515 ft. (157 m), 3,800-ton heavy derrick/pipelay vessel. The two companies, who signed the contract on December 21, 1999 in Beijing, China, beat out competitors from Singapore, South Korea and Japan to secure the largest contract ever awarded by CNOOC. Scheduled for a March 31, 2001 delivery, the vessel will be built at the Yantai Raffles yard in Shandong Province, China.

Yantai Raffles Shipyard and SENER have entered into an agreement for the evaluation of FORAN, a CAD/CAM/CAE software for the design and production of all types of ship using a 3D product model. Yantai Raffles Shipyard, which is situated in Yantai, Shandong Province in northern China, has decided to carry out an evaluation of FORAN by means of a pilot installation for the elaboration of a 3D product model of their current project for an 86 m. AHTS vessel for Tidewater. A couple of days sufficed for the system implementation and currently the personnel at Yantai are undergoing full training in FORAN use. At the completion of each phase of this training the people involved will continue with real work on the project in hand.

According to Rolls-Royce chief executive John Rose, Rolls-Royce has been increasing its marine business in China by more than 20 percent. Annually over recent years. The Rolls-Royce office in Shanghai is responsible for the company’s marine activity in China, including gas turbines, diesel engines, propellers, water jets, rudders steering gear and deck machinery. Recently, China Offshore Oil Corporation ordered seven supply vessels for which Rolls-Royce is supplying a range of marine equipment for five of them.
