NYK-Fil Celebrates Its 30th Anniversary

Shipbuilding: NYK, Jera Carrier Named “Shinshu Maru”
Japan’s Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) held a naming ceremony at its Sakaide shipyard for the new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier owned jointly by NYK Line and JERA.The ceremony was attended by Hendrik Gordenker, chairman of JERA Co. Inc.; Yasumi Kudo, chairman of NYK; and a number of related parties.At the ceremony, the ship was named “Shinshu Maru” by Mr. Gordenker and the ceremonial rope holding the vessel in place was cut by his wife. The ship derives its name from “Shinshu”, the traditional name for Nagano Prefecture, located in central Honshu—the primary island of Japan, which is one of the areas that the Chubu Electric Power Co. Inc.
New Japanese Coal Carrier Enters Service
A new coal carrier Noshiro Maru was delivered on September 30 at Oshima Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. in Saikai city, Nagasaki prefecture. A delivery and naming ceremony was held at the shipyard on the same day and attended by Makoto Kaiwa, chairman of Tohoku Electric Power; his wife; and NYK Chairman Yasumi Kudo. The new ship is the third to take the name Noshiro Maru, the first of which began transporting coal for Tohoku Electric Power Co. Inc. 23 years ago. The vessel is named after Noshiro terminal in Akita prefecture, the destination for coal that is transported mainly from Australia and Indonesia to generate electricity for the Tohoku district of Japan.
Coal Carrier Shin Sekiyo Delivered
On January 15, a new coal carrier, Shin Sekiyo, was delivered at Oshima Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. (Saikai city, Nagasaki prefecture). A delivery and naming ceremony was held at the shipyard on the same day and attended by NYK chairman Yasumi Kudo and representatives from Chugoku Electric Power Co. Inc. Shin Sekiyo is the successor to the first Sekiyo operated by NYK. After delivery, the ship will be assigned to transport coal mainly from Australia and Indonesia to power plants operated by Chugoku Electric Power. Compared to the standard 70,000-ton Panamax bulk carrier, Shin Sekiyo has a wider beam and a shallower draft, improving transportation efficiency to ports having a limited water depth.
Shallow Draft Coal Carrier Delivered to NYK Line
The 'Hokuriku Maru', a specialized coal carrier having a wide beam and shallow draft for the transport of steaming coal from Australia and Indonesia to power plants operated by the Hokuriku Electric Power Company (Hokuriku Denryoku) has been accepted from the shipyard by NYK. A naming ceremony was held at the shipyard on the same day and attended by Hokuriku Denryoku representatives and NYK president Yasumi Kudo, among others. Hokuriku Maru is the second vessel to have been honored with this name. The original Hokuriku Maru was built in 1995.
NYK Presents Model Vessel to ICS to Honor Chairmanship
To mark the Chairmanship of Masamichi Morooka, the International Chamber of Shipping was last night presented with a scale model of the award-winning NYK car carrier Auriga Leader, the world’s first solar-assisted vessel to be put into commercial service. The model was formally presented to ICS by Yasumi Kudo, President of NYK, in the presence of the ICS Chairman. The 60,000-metric-ton vessel is fitted with 328 solar panels which can generate as much as 40 kilowatts of power.
NYK-Line Support New Philippine Maritime Training Academy
The new NYK-TDG campus opens its doors to 180 students at its Calamba location (about 50 km south of Manila). Two ceremonies were held — an opening ceremony for the sparkling new crew training facilities, maritime academy, classrooms, and lodgings, and then an entrance ceremony for the incoming class. NTMA is jointly run by NYK and business partner Transnational Diversified Group (TDG). Students receive three years of classroom study that includes use of the academy’s ship-handling simulator and engine plant, and follow that learning with one year of practical onboard training.
First Solar-Power-Assisted Vessel in Development
Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line; head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; president: Yasumi Kudo), Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. (KHI; head office: Kobe-shi, Hyogo Prefecture; president: Satoshi Hasegawa), the Monohakobi Technology Institute (MTI; head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; president: Yutaka Yasunaga), and Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK; head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; chairman and president: Noboru Ueda) are to begin in June shipboard tests to verify the effects of a jointly developed hybrid power supply system for vessels.
