Nokia, ABB and Kalmar Trial 5G Technology for Harbor Automation

Nokia, ABB and Kalmar, part of Cargotec,  have successfully conducted industrial trials that leverage the low latency capabilities of 5G to support time-critical applications and enhance protection and efficiency in a smart electricity grid and in harbor automation.In a joint press release the companies said that the trials, conducted as part of the Wireless for Verticals (WIVE) research project, represent one of the first real-world applications of time-critical 5G applications on electricity grid and harbor automation.URLLC (ultra-reliable low latency communications) has been identified as one of the three main usage scenarios for 5G due to its ability to transmit data, within a few milliseconds or less, with high reliability.

Finland Ports Strike on September 18

Finland's three big trade union federations plan industrial action on Friday against the government's labor reform program. Hence, Finnish ports, already suffering from container traffic declines, are set to shut on Friday 18 September. Transport Workers Union (ATK) head Marko Piirainen told state broadcaster YLE that the country will "virtually come to a standstill", reports JoC. Work is expected to halt beginning at 8:00 a.m. local time, with day-long demonstrations set to start at 11:00 a.m. The strike is aimed at safeguarding entitlements to paid holidays, overtime pay, and sick leave. According to YLE, stevedoring company Steveco is expected to announce negotiations over potentially shedding all its 700 workers at Kotka port. The overall traffic slipped 5% year on year in August.

STX Arctech Helsinki Shipyard Sale to USC Russia

The Russian state-owned shipbuilding firm USC has confirmed it will take full ownership of the financially challenged Arctech Helsinki shipyard from its current owner, the Korean company STX, according ot the Finnish newspaper Yle. United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) already holds a 50 percent stake in Arctech, and will now take full control when it buys out STX, says Yle, referring to a report in the Russian newspaper Kommersant. Sale of Finland's STX Shipyards Offers Opportunities

The Finland PM is hopeful that a strong new owner can turn around the prospects of the cash-strapped Finnish shipyards. This past week, the South Korean parent company STX announced it plans to sell off the Rauma and Turku shipyards as well as its half-share in the Helsinki shipyard, reports yle UUTISET Finland, while Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen considers that the looming sale of the STX shipyards in Finland represents a major opportunity. Meanwhile the aid package granted to the Turku shipyard for the construction of two cruise liners for the German company TUI will go ahead, according to yle UUTISET Finland, citing  Minister of Economic Affairs Jan Vapaavuori who informs that construction will be completed as planned, despite STX's plan to sell the shipyard.

Large Shipbuilding order for Turku Shipyard

According to a report from YLE, Germany’s TUI Cruises has ordered a large cruise vessel from Finland’s STX shipyard in Turku. The vessel will be handed over in the spring of 2014. The deal with the STX shipyard also includes a second vessel.   Source: YLE
