Wärtsilä to Power Poland’s First LNG-fueled RoPax Vessels

The technology group Wärtsilä said it has been contracted by Remontowa shipyard in Poland to supply engines, fuel storage and supply systems for three new RoPax vessels, the first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fueled RoPax vessels to be built for the Polish maritime sector. Wärtsilä Propulsion Selected for Molslinjen Fast Ferry

Wärtsilä said it will provide the propulsion solutions for a new 115-meter high-speed ferry being built by Austal at the Australian shipbuilder’s yard in the Philippines for Danish operator Molslinjen.The newbuild will feature four Wärtsilä 31 engines, recognized by Guinness World Records as being the world’s most efficient four-stroke diesel engine, and four Wärtsilä WXJ1500SRI waterjets. Wärtsilä will also supply its ProTouch bridge controls system. EU Loan Supports Ystad LNG Upgrades

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has signed a SEK 445 million ($45.6 million) loan agreement with the Municipality of Ystad to expand harbor facilities so that new, larger liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels on the Swinoujscie-Ystad line can access the harbor.The port in the southern-Swedish town is a busy connection point to the Polish Port of Swinoujscie and the Danish island of Bornholm. The project aims at increasing the capacity and upgrading the Port of Ystad facilities in order to accommodate larger ro-pax vessels over 240 meters in length…

Austal Wins New Ferry Order from Molslinjen

Perth-based ship manufacturer, Austal has penned a contract for the design and construction of a 115 meter, high-speed catamaran for Molslinjen of Denmark.The contract worth A$136 million is a follow-up order to the 109 meter high-speed catamaran Express 4, delivered to Molslinjen in January 2019, the new Auto Express 115 will be the largest ferry (by volume) ever built by Austal.The vessel will be fitted with a new generation of medium speed engines that are LNG compatible, and is designed with the potential to upgrade to LNG fuel in the future.Construction will commence in the third quarter of 2020 and delivery of the vessel will be in the first quarter of 2022.

ESL Shipping Acquires AtoB@C

Finnish dry bulker ESL ShippingLtd, a shipping company fully owned by Aspo Group, is going to acquire all the outstanding shares of AtoB@C Shipping AB and AtoB@C Holding AB (AtoB@C) that offer shipping services. The enterprise value is EUR 30 million. The final purchase price will be mainly financed by Aspo's existing financing reserves, and approximately EUR 4.2 million will be covered by new shares issued by Aspo Plc. The transaction will require the competition authority's approval in Finland to be completed. It is estimated that the transaction will be completed in the third quarter of 2018. AtoB@C is engaged in the shipping business with 30 vessels in size of 4,000-5,000 tonnes. AtoB@C owns six dry cargo vessels in full, and it has a share of 49% of two vessels.

Polferries, Sup4Nav Ink Navdec system Deal

The Navdec system designed to improve safety of passengers and freight and aimed to support navigators in collision situations was tested on board the ferry m/f Wawel and m/f Mazovia in 2016. This invention will also be installed now on m/f Baltivia sailing from Świnoujście to Ystad. Polferries decided to equip all ferries with Navdec system to improve safety of passengers and freight. Accordingly, an agreement to this effect was signed between Polferries and Sup4Nav on 8th of December 2016 in Kołobrzeg. The navigational decision support system NAVDEC is the first navigational tool worldwide that performs information functions as well as those typical of decision support systems.

Port of Ystad Posts Record First Half

Port of Ystad, which saw record-breaking volumes in 2015, continues reaching new record numbers in 2016 for traffic to and from Poland and the Danish island of Bornholm. The number of ton goods, trucks, busses, cars and passengers all showed an increase during the first half of 2016 compared to the same period last year. The biggest reported increase was the number of trucks with an 18.6 percent increase. In total 110,000 trucks passed through the port – a new record for Port of Ystad. The number of ton goods surpassed 1,650,000, also a port record with a 13 percent increase.

Record Traffic in Port of Ystad

Port of Ystad saw record breaking traffic numbers in 2015, retaining the port’s position as Sweden’s third largest ferry passenger port. The largest increase was in bus traffic, which increased by 30,7 % compared to 2014. “The numbers from 2015 show that the traffic in Port of Ystad continues to grow, with the exception of railway waggons where we saw a minor decrease. The conventional goods as well as goods on trucks and trailers increased, making the total number higher than last years” says Björn Boström, CEO of Port of Ystad. The number of passengers increased by 1,5%. In total, 1 987 982 passengers chose to travel via the Port of Ystad. If this trend continues the port is looking to exceed two million passengers in 2016. Car traffic increased by 4 % compared to 2014.

TransAtlantic Divests Container, Ship Management Operation

TransAtlantic AB has reached an agreement to divest the Container Operation to X-Press Feeders and, in a separate transaction, to divest Ship Management operations to AtoB@C. The container operations to be sold consist of TransFeeder North Line, TransBothnia Container Line and TransFeeder South Line, including the forwarding business and 15 onshore employees. The annual turnover is approximately 420 MSEK and 105 000 TEUs. The purchase price is 3.1 MEUR on a debt free basis, payable in cash on closing. The transaction is expected to close in the beginning of December 2015. X-Press Feeders will continue to conduct the business under the brand TransAtlantic Container. “We believe that X-Press Feeders is ideally positioned to take the strong market position of the container operations forward.

Adelte Wins Contracts for 8 Boarding Bridges

Adelte, a designer and manufacturer of sophisticated Seaport Passenger Boarding Bridges (SPBBs) for cruise and ferry terminals has recently won eight contracts for the supply in 2014 of a total of eleven tailor-made SPBBs to the ports of Rotterdam, Stornoway, Swinoujscie and Ullapool in Northern Europe, Denia and Savona in Southern Europe and Busan and Singapore in Asia. Adelte has been awarded a contract by the Rotterdam Port Authority to install this summer a new KRONUS SPBB, which will replace the current system.

Transatlantic Aims to Become Baltic Sea Bulk Major

Sweden's Rederi AB TransAtlantic has entered into an agreement with AtoB@C Shipping AB where TransAtlantic effectively outsources all the commercial activities of its Short Sea Bulk division, starting September 1, 2013. Additionally, the agreement sets the terms for the chartering out all of TransAtlantic’s short sea bulk vessels to AtoB@C. TransAtlantic’s strategy is to become a more dominant player in key markets by focusing on the Baltic RoRo and Container segments. Entering into the agreement with AtoB@C fits very well with this strategy and is part of TransAtlantic’s restructuring and repositioning program. TransAtlantic will continue to have ownership of its current short sea bulk fleet and also continue the current charters of short sea bulk vessels.

Cavotec co-hosted a community & business outreach event at the Port of Ystad, including a seminar on benefits of Alernative Marine Power (AMP). The event was co-hosted by Cavotec, leading power and automation conglomerate ABB, the Port of Ystad, electrical systems specialist Processkontroll Elektriska, technical consultancy Grontmij, as well as Polferries and Unity Line. Cavotec AMP systems enable ships to close down their engines while docked and to connect to shore side electricity.

ABB shore-to-ship power connection installed in Port of Ystad enables vesels to shut down their diesel generators to reduce pollution and noise. Shore to ship power connection is sometimes known as AMP, Alternative Maritime Power. Located on the southern tip of Sweden on the Baltic coast, Ystad is Sweden’s fifth largest port, handling some 3,500 sailings annually, including daily ferry services to Poland and Denmark, as well as cruise ships in the summer and cargo vessels all year round.

An AMP (Alternative Marine Power) application installed in the south of Sweden port by Cavotec for 'Cold Ironing'. Cavotec claim this to be the largest high-voltage shore connection system in the world. Concern over air quality in harbours has led to growing pressure on port operators to reduce carbon and nitrogen dioxide emissions. Alternative Maritime Power (AMP) is a cold ironing system which allows ships to turn off their engines when in port, and plug into shore-side electricity supply, thus helping to bring cleaner air to ports and surrounding communities.

Færgen Takes Delivery of Austal's Largest Catamaran

Austal’s largest catamaran built to date, the 113 metre “Leonora Christina”, was recently handed over to her owners, marking completion of construction of the high speed vehicle-passenger ferry at Austal’s Henderson shipyard. “Leonora Christina” was constructed for Danish company Færgen (formerly Nordic Ferry Services) and is due to depart Austal’s Henderson shipyard for Denmark this week, where it will be operated by Bornholmer Færgen, a subsidiary of Færgen. “Leonora Christina” will join the 86 metre Austal-built catamaran…

Austal Launches Its Largest Catamaran

The final stages of construction of Austal’s largest catamaran to date were celebrated this week with a traditional coin ceremony, followed by the vessel’s successful launch. Placing a coin at the foot of the mast of a newly constructed ship is an ancient maritime tradition which is believed to bring good luck to the vessel and its crew. Senior Captain Soren Schow travelled from Denmark with a coin from the year 1660. This coin holds significance as it is from the same era as the ship’s namesake, Danish historical icon, Leonora Christina.

Oil Slick Recovery in Baltic Progresses Slowly

Rescue boats were making slow progress in scooping up an oil slick in the southern Baltic Sea that was drifting towards Germany on Wednesday because the oil was thicker than expected, coastguards said. The origin of the slick was unknown, but was likely to be a spill from a ship passing through the busy area. The slick was 17 miles long and 250 m wide when discovered about 45 km south of the port city of Ystad on Sweden's southeast coast around noon on Tuesday. The Swedish Coast Guard said in a statement that a Swedish and a German ship had managed to scoop up only about 212 cu. ft. (six cu. m) of oil between them as the slick drifted into Danish and German territorial waters. It was reported that five other ships were on the scene and one more, from Denmark, was en route.

Volvo to Provide Breathylizers to Nordic Ferries

The Volvo Group has taken a step to reduce the number of intoxicated drivers entering Sweden by providing breathalyzer equipment for truck and bus drivers at ferries serving Sweden. This initiative has been welcomed by the authorities. Over the past few years, there have been several serious accidents involving foreign vehicles driven by drivers who have been intoxicated. Statistics from the police in southern Sweden also indicate a sharp rise in the number of intoxicated drivers. As of March this year, the number of drivers arrested in the port of Ystad for driving under the influence of alcohol has more than doubled compared with the previous year.
