ABS - "An Introduction to Arctic Engineering"

Date: Tuesday, November 5, 2013
Time: 8:00am - 5:00pm
Fee: $295 per person, refreshments and lunch will be included

The exploration for resources and marine transportation in the Arctic region are becoming increasingly viable and correspondingly the interest in research and commercial exploitation has been steadily rising. This requires vessels, offshore structures and their equipment to be designed to operate in ice covered waters in high latitude, low temperature environments. This introductory course will provide participants with a view of up-to-date Arctic marine and offshore activities, regulatory issues in the Arctic, Arctic environments and ship-ice interaction, performance of ice capable ships, ice strengthening design standards, design and operational considerations for low temperature environments, design-assessment procedures for direct calculation and offshore structures in the Arctic.

Time: 8:00am - 5:00pm

This is a beginning to intermediate level course for naval architects, salvors and others whose work requires the use of the GHS software. Topics include: Section Editor, Part Maker and Model Converter Modules; basic concept and principles; model building; run files; GHS commands and the command language including macros and variables; creating tables and graphs; load conditions; stability criteria; intact and damage stability; wind heeling moments; free surface issues; longitudinal strength calculations including waves; tank characteristics and tables; floodable lengths; introduction to Load Editor; and possibly time for last day topics from students.

CD-adapco - The Virtual Tow Tank

Date: Tuesday, November 5, 2013
Time: 8:00am - 5:00pm

The aim of this one day short course is to teach the techniques needed to conduct accurate and efficient marine simulations using computational fluid dynamics. The course is structured as a combination of lectures, demonstrations and workshops (tutorials). Best practices for meshing and analysis of stationary and multi-degree-of-freedom (DOF) free-surface applications are emphasized and demonstrated. Attendees will leave the short course having constructed a model of a typical ship geometry and set up a resistance analysis. Examples will also be shown of calculating sinkage and trim, seakeeping and the modeling and analysis of propellers.
