Timberland to Supply Equipment for Tugs

Two Panama Canal Authority tugs, being built by Saint John Shipbuilding at East Isle Shipyard in Georgetown, Prince Edward Island, will be outfitted with deck machinery supplied by Timberland Equipment.

Saint John Shipbuilding won the contract for two new 4,000 hp tugs, along with an option for two more, in October, 2000.

Timberland's scope of supply consists of two Series 651A Hawser winches, one Series 353H, 24-in. Hydraulic Capstan and a 160 hp diesel/hydraulic power unit per ship-set. On the bow, two Timberland Series 651A Hawser winches, each with a line pull rating of 8,000 lbs. at 230 FPM mid-drum. The drums are designed for underwound configuration.

Located aft is a Timberland Series 353H hydraulic capstan, complete with a 24-in. diameter cast steel head. Performance is rated at 20,000 lbs. linepull at 30 FPM with a light line speed up to 60 FPM. Bollard rating at mid-height of capstan head is 30,000 lbs.

All deck equipment will be controlled locally from the deck or from the wheelhouse.

Timberland will supply a complete diesel-hydraulic power unit utilizing the shipyard supplied diesel engine. The hydraulic system designed to give the customer complete redundancy in the event of failure to one of the pumps.
