Thome Appoints Tanker Fleet COO
Thome Ship Management has added to its senior management tier by appointing Steen Nygaard Madsen as Chief Operating Officer (COO) for the Thome Ship Management Tanker Fleet. Madsen will take up the position on June 1 this year, bringing with him experience in running ships, stemming from his seagoing career as well as his time with A.P Moller in Copenhagen where he was operationally responsible for a large section of its fleet.

JASNAOE Award for MOL Energy Recovery System
Mitsui OSK Lines, Ltd. today announced receipt of the 2014 Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers (JASNAOE) Award for development of a waste heat energy recovery system for marine diesel engine used to generate electric power and assist ship propulsion. The system was installed on a MOL-operated large-scale iron ore carrier. The award was made in ceremonies held in Sendai International Center, Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, on May 26, 2014.

USCG Rescues Man, Woman, 2 Dogs
Port Angeles, Washington-based U.S. Coast Guardsmen rescued two people and two dogs from a vessel taking on water near Port Angeles, Friday morning. A man and woman wearing lifejackets were aboard a 19-foot vessel with their dogs when they began taking on water. The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Wahoo, an 87-foot patrol boat homeported in Port Angeles was already underway in the area and a boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Port Angeles launched aboard a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium.

Rolls-Royce Installs Promas Lite System for Star Cruises
Rolls-Royce has installed the Promas Lite propulsion system on SuperStar Virgo, the first vessel in Southeast Asia to be equipped with this efficient and fuel saving system. Promas Lite is an integrated propeller and rudder system that increases efficiency and is designed specifically for retrofitting to existing ships. Norwegian Spirit operated by Star Cruises’ subsidiary Norwegian Cruise Line was the first vessel in the fleet to be installed with Promas Lite in 2011.

Port Hedland Tugboat Strike Averted
The threat of a strike by tugboat workers at Port Hedland has been averted after the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) said no industrial action would be taken until late June at the earliest, GAC reported in its daily Hot Port News alert. Tugboat workers aligned to the union had been threatening to bring Port Hedland to a halt over a dispute over wages and annual leave entitlements. The MUA yesterday, May 22, agreed to suspend taking industrial action for a 30-day period.

CMA CGM Upgrades SAMWAF Service

USS Vella Gulf Enters Black Sea
According to the U.S. Navy, its Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Vella Gulf (CG 72) will enter the Black Sea Friday, May 23, to promote peace and stability in the region. Vella Gulf's mission is to work with NATO allies toward mutual goals, demonstrating the United States' commitment to strengthening and improving interoperability in the region, the Navy said. The U.S. Navy routinely operates ships in the Black Sea consistent with the Montreux Convention and International Law.

WRRDA Spurs Savannah Harbor Expansion
The U.S. Senate’s passage of the federal Water Resources Reform and Development Act of 2014 (WRRDA) has cleared the way for construction to begin on the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project. The House passed identical legislation on Tuesday. Georgia Ports Authority Executive Director Curtis Foltz called the bill’s passage a critical milestone. “Today’s action is an important step toward better accommodating the larger vessels that are the new standard in global shipping,” said Foltz.

Vard to Build OSV for Island Offshore
Vard Holdings Limited, a global designer and shipbuilder of offshore and specialized vessels, has secured a contract with Island Offshore for the construction of one Rolls-Royce designed offshore support vessel (OSV). Vard reports the value of the contract exceeds NOK 1 billion. Delivery is scheduled from Vard Brevik in Norway in 2Q 2016. The hull of the vessel will be delivered from Vard Tulcea in Romania.

MARAD Announces Office Realignments
The Maritime Administration (MARAD) today announced an organizational realignment that it said will strengthen the Agency’s ability to ensure the nation has sufficient capability to meet sealift needs during conflicts or national emergencies. • Federal Sealift continues to be responsible for Ready Reserve Force vessels, Emergency Preparedness and the National Defense Reserve Fleet. • Commercial Sealift will coordinate both the Cargo Preference and Maritime Security Programs.
