Wärtsilä Scrubbers for 6 Finnlines Vessels
With new, more stringent sulphur oxide (SOx) emission regulations due to take effect January 2015, Finnlines has ordered Wärtsilä Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems for six of its Baltic and North Sea fleet of vessels, Wärtsilä said. By selecting the scrubber systems, Wärtsilä said the vessels will be able to operate in compliance with the new environmental regulations while continuing to operate on heavy fuel oil.

Honolulu Harbor Gets New Security Sign
Construction will be completed Friday of a new sign informing mariners of the 24/7 security zone in the Honolulu Harbor and whom to contact for permission to enter, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) said in a press announcement. The sign, measuring 12 x 24 feet, is worded with large letters created using highly reflective tape, will be lit at night and is oriented so that mariners will be able to read the sign while still offshore, outside the security zone.

Foss Honors Newbuild POLB Fireboat
The first of two new fireboats built by Foss Maritime for the Port of Long Beach (POLB) was dedicated in a blessing ceremony on Thursday, May 1 at Foss Maritime's Seattle Shipyard, the company said. The vessel, named Fireboat 20, is being readied for service and is slated for delivery to Long Beach, Calif., this summer. Gary Faber, Foss Senior Vice President, made opening remarks and praised the hardworking men and women who helped construct the vessel.

Divers Guilty of Raiding Historic Shipwrecks
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) announced that two divers from Kent have pleaded guilty to not declaring valuable items from shipwrecks off the U.K. coast. David Knight and Edward Huzzey, both from Sandgate, admitted to 19 offences between them, contrary to section 236 and section 237 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995. Items were taken from shipwrecks off the Kent coast, with the first known objects removed in 2001.

SENER Presents Hull Form Optimization Paper
COMPIT, Europe’s annual international conference on computer applications and information technology in the Maritime Industries, took place this year from May 12-14 in Redworth, U.K., with the participation of SENER. SENER’s Rodrigo Pérez presented the paper “An Innovative Approach for Hull Surface Fairing” written by Perez and SENER colleague Mirko Toman. GE Gas Turbines Power LCS USS Coronado
Littoral Combat Ship USS Coronado (LCS 4) was commissioned by the United States Navy on April 5 at its home port of San Diego, California. GE Marine reported that this Independence-variant LCS is powered by two GE LM2500 marine gas turbines. Named for the California city of Coronado, LCS 4 is the third Navy ship to bear the name of the "Crown City." The first USS Coronado (PF 38), a patrol frigate, served as a convoy escort during World War II.

TOTE, Inc. President and CEO Anthony Chiarello is among 11 honored by the White House as 2014 transportation industry “Champions of Change.” Chiarello was chosen for his role in leading the U.S. maritime industry toward natural gas as fuel. DNV GL announced the release of its new Navigator Port 2 software, an overhaul of DNV Navigator. According to DNV GL, the upgraded port clearance software aims to achieve a new level of usability, with a new and intuitive structure and interface. Navigator Port 2, previously called DNV Navigator, has taken a leap forward in ease-of-use. The interface has been improved. It is now more intuitive and efficient, with a work-oriented process that is easier to understand and navigate within.
