International maritime law specialist Hill Dickinson announced the death of Patrick Hawkins, head of its office in Greece.Hawkins died in the hospital on August 20, having suffered a heart attack in early July. His funeral took place in Athens on Monday.Announcing his death, David Wareing and Tony Goldsmith, heads of Hill Dickinson’s Marine and Trade Group, said, “It is with enormous sadness that we have to inform you of the passing of our much loved colleague Patrick Hawkins.

Survitec appointed Mark Baines as Global Vice President, Cruise. For the first time in 100,000 years the chilling landscape of Arctic known for its snow-capped mountains and polar bears may be without its sea ice either this year or the next. Cambridge University Professor Peter Wadhams has made headlines this weekend, telling The Independent that the Arctic could become ice-free “this year or next,” says a report in Atlas Obscura. While the extreme prediction has drawn skepticism from other climate scientists, Wadhams’ warning does draw attention to a situation that many monitoring Arctic sea ice find alarming. He  based his prediction on projected data from the US National Snow and Ice Data Center showing that on 1 June this year there were estimated to be 11.1 million square kilometers of sea ice.

San Leon Energy, the AIM listed company focused on oil and gas exploration in Europe and North Africa, announces the spud of the Rawicz-12 appraisal well yesterday on the 742 km2 Rawicz Concession in Poland’s southern Permian Basin. The well, which is operated by Palomar Natural Resources (“PNR”), is targeting the previously-discovered Rawicz gas accumulation in the Permian Rotliegendes sandstones. The well is estimated to take 45 days to reach a total depth of 1,900 meters and is being drilled by Poland’s Exalo Drilling. A full testing program is planned immediately after drilling and completion of the well, assuming positive results. PNR holds 65% and is operator of the concession, with San Leon holding the remaining 35%.

Climate change is aiding shipping, fisheries and tourism in the Arctic but the economic gains fall short of a "cold rush" for an icy region where temperatures are rising twice as fast as the world average. A first cruise ship will travel the icy Northwest Passage north of Canada in 2016, Iceland has unilaterally set itself mackerel quotas as stocks shift north and Greenland is experimenting with crops such as tomatoes. Yet businesses, including oil and gas companies or mining firms looking north, face risks including that permafrost will thaw and ruin ice roads, buildings and pipelines.

Rolls-Royce is pleased to announce that Ruth Cairnie has been appointed as a Non-Executive Director of the Company with effect from 1 September 2014. Ruth Cairnie was formerly Executive Vice President Strategy & Planning at Royal Dutch Shell Plc, where she held a number of senior international roles, including managing the Global Commercial Fuels business. She served on the boards of Shell Pakistan Ltd and joint venture companies in Germany and Thailand. She is currently a Non-Executive Director of Associated British Foods plc and Keller Group plc. She is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Rotterdam School of Management. Ruth graduated in Joint Honours Mathematics & Physics from Bristol University and then took a Masters in Advanced Studies, Maths, at Cambridge University.

Aker Solutions says it has recruited David Phillips from HSBC Global Equity Research as head of industry and investor relations. He will start on June 17, 2014. Phillips, 43, served as global co-head of oil and gas research and managing director at HSBC since mid-2011 after joining the bank as an analyst in 2005. He earlier specialized as an analyst covering the chemicals sector for banks including Commerzbank, Morgan Stanley and Dresdner Kleinwort Benson. He will be based at Aker Solutions' London office and report to the company's chief financial officer. After obtaining a postgraduate degree in industrial engineering, Ibrahim Güngen founded Güngen Foreign Trade Co Ltd with his brother Mehmet in 1976 and the business quickly became the biggest importer of molasses in Turkey. Mr Güngen has been chief executive officer of Güngen Maritime and Trading since 1990. Dr Grahaeme Henderson, aged 56, joined Shell following a PhD in Engineering from Southampton University in 1980.

Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), and BP America Inc. announce the signing of a three-year, $3 million-dollar partnership, marking the beginning of a long-term research collaboration.
