Kongsberg to Equip Belgian Research Vessel
Kongsberg Maritime will deliver an integrated suite of subsea technology to a new Belgian research vessel. Already under construction at Freire Shipyard in Vigo, Spain, the advanced new replacement for the Belgian research vessel RV Belgica is due to be handed over to the Belgian Federal Science Policy Office (BELSPO) in October 2020.Launched in 1984, RV Belgica carried out many years of service, however, emerging mechanical issues in 2013 catalyzed plans to build her replacement.
Navico Acquires Naviop
Marine electronics manufacturer Navico, parent company to the Lowrance, Simrad and B&G brands, announced it has finalized an agreement to acquire marine monitoring and control systems provider Naviop. Providing the integration framework to capture data from all boating systems, Naviop creates a digital ecosystem on boats outfitted with Simrad, Lowrance and B&G marine electronics, with the multifunction display serving as the hub for complete system control and information. “For years, auto manufacturers have provided consumers with a complete integration solution at their fingertips, and we, as a marine industry have fallen behind the curve to provide the same level of convenience and control,” said Leif Ottosson, Navico CEO.
Rolls-Royce, GPA Collaboration Pays Dividends
Rolls-Royce and Guido Perla and Associates, Inc. (GPA) collaborative efforts are delivering results for customers in North America. Rolls-Royce and GPA most recently teamed up last year to provide a highly innovative design and power & propulsion systems integration solution for two PSVs for Jackson Offshore Operators. Delivery of the first two GPA 675J PSVs, currently under construction at BAE Systems’ shipyard in Jacksonville, Florida, will be made in 2014. The option for two additional vessels of the same type was exercised earlier this year.
Software Slashes Fuel Consumption
The portfolio builds on ABB’s expertise in marine automation, electrical and propulsion systems to monitor and optimize all energy production and consumption processes during vessel operation. As a result of this deep knowledge of ship performance collected and processed by the ABB software, the vessel’s owners and operators will know where every drop of ship fuel is consumed and whether it is used efficiently and optimally. Most importantly, this knowledge creates awareness of ship energy consumption processes and enables benchmarks to be set and best practices to be achieved. ABB refers to this capability as Smart Marine Integration.
Transas Launches Enhanced Navi-Sailor
In mid-July, Transas commercially launched the latest version of its new-generation marine navigation and information system, Navi-Sailor 3000. The Navi-Sailor 3000 ver.2 has been designed in line with the latest IMO regulations for UAIS interface. As such, Navi-Sailor 3000 has been provided with the capability to send, receive and display UAIS transponder information exactly as it is prescribed by international requirements. Compliance is achieved in the UAIS message format, content and interface of the send/receive facility, while full static, voyage and ship movement data are displayed on the electronic chart screen in strict accordance with the international standards.
Transas Installs First VTMS Simulator in Russia
Transas Eurasia, Transas’ agent for Russia and CIS areas, has installed a VTMS training simulation complex at the Makarov State Maritime Academy (St. Petersburg, Russia). This is the first simulator of its kind installed in Russia, which guarantees the high level of VTMS training required to meet international navigation standards. The new VTMS training complex includes one instructor station, two specialised work places for VTMS operators, a full-scale navigation bridge with real control panels and 135-degree visualisation system, and a navigation bridge with one-channel visualisation. The VTMS simulator permits the use in the exercise of 48 ownship models and 43 sailing areas.

Over the past 25 years CAD and CAM have become a vital part of shipbuilding. The individual tools have evolved into highly capable products of today. This has included the change from 2-D to 3-D CAD, a dramatic increase in the level of usability (example: from batch mode to fancy 3-D GUI's) and increased functionality within the tools themselves. With the development of these tools has also come improved integration of the CAD and CAM data. While 2-D CAD drawings were originally entered into the CAM system manually, it has now become commonplace to utilize a fully integrated product model environment from vendors such as Dassault Systems (Catia), Intergraph (ISDP), Nupas-Cadmatic, Sener (Foran) and Tribon Solutions (Tribon M1).
