MaK, Caterpillar to Partner DNV GL for Condition Based Monitoring

MaK together with Caterpillar’s Marine Asset Intelligence organization has announced that they have partnered with DNV GL to help make the change from time based maintenance to condition based maintenance by leveraging the predictive analytics of Cat Asset Intelligence in accordance with DNV GL’s Survey Arrangement Machinery Condition Monitoring (CM) requirements. The Survey Arrangement of DNV GL recognizes, across multiple dimensions, the value that an industry leading condition based monitoring system such as Cat Asset Intelligence provides to ship owners. First, by using data analytics to provide transparency and validate equipment condition, unnecessary maintenance expense can be avoided by right-sizing maintenance to condition and not to the calendar.

JX Ocean Selects ClassNK CMAXS LC-A

ClassNK subsidiary ClassNK Consulting Service announced that JX Ocean Co., Ltd. has selected the machinery condition monitoring and automatic diagnostic system ClassNK CMAXS LC- A for use on 310,000 dwt tanker Eneos Spirit. ClassNK CMAXS LC- A is a solution that integrates sensor anomaly detection algorithm to analyze correlations between multiple sensor data in the engine room and detect any early signs of malfunction or potential damage to machinery. Also, the solution has a feature that automatically shows the optimum setting of the main engine, and troubleshooting instructions based on the results obtained by the analysis. The solution shows the condition of a wide variety of machinery in real- time…

K Line Expands Use of ClassNK CMAX LC-A

“K” Line Ship Management (Singapore) Pte Ltd has selected ClassNK Consulting Service’s machinery condition monitoring and automatic diagnostic system ClassNK CMAXS LC-A for use on one of its container vessels, marking the first commercial application of the software. “K” Line Ship Management (Singapore) Pte Ltd selected ClassNK CMAXS LC-A after a successful trial installation in 2014 delivered proven fuel and lubricating oil savings of 200 tons/year. The trial was carried out as part of a joint research project in collaboration with ClassNK and Diesel United Ltd. ClassNK CMAXS LC-A uses innovative diagnosis algorithms to analyze multiple sensor data in the engine room and detect any early signs of machinery damage.

Maintenance: How Well Do You Listen?

A predictive / preventative maintenance program that includes vibration analysis can help save time and money. Are you one of those people who “listen to your gut?” If you are in charge of a vessel’s maintenance program – listening to your machinery is vital to its livelihood. And, if it’s in high demand, or on a tight schedule, chances are your livelihood, and that of your crew, is at stake too. Vibration is annoying and uncomfortable – easy to notice on a pleasure craft – not so much on a commercial vessel.

Kittiwake Launches MHC Bearing Checker

London - Kittiwake, a global provider of asset control and protection technology, announced the launch of its MHC Bearing Checker, a small, hand-held device, designed to provide an instant indication of machinery condition. The acoustic emission-based instrument is a solution to monitoring an unlimited number of machines on a periodic basis. Based on the detection of high frequency activity which is naturally generated by deterioration in rotating machinery, the MHC Bearing Checker is simple to use as its Distress® parameter removes the need for machine specific interpretations. If Distress® is greater than 10, the user knows there is a problem and can instigate further checks.

Type Approval for Kongsberg's Bearing Wear Condition Monitor

No open-up inspections required following Type Approval. Kongsberg Maritime is pleased to announce that it has received system Type Approval for its Bearing Wear Condition Monitoring (BWCM) system. The Type Approval was received October 2011 and is according to Germanischer Lloyd’s (GL) ‘Guidelines for Machinery Condition Monitoring’, meaning it is now approved to avoid open-up inspections, thereby reducing engine downtime and maintenance costs significantly. The KONGSBERG BWCM system measures and displays the combined physical wear of crosshead…

IMarEST President's Lecture Focuses on Failure

Engineering failures in the marine industry certainly cost time and resources to correct and, sadly, sometimes resulting in loss of life. At his President’s Day Lecture, Professor John Carlton FREng, Professor of Marine Engineering, City University London and the 109th President of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST), will retrospectively discuss some of the marine failures that he has encountered, with the aim of teasing out the underlying issues that have contributed to their causes. The President’s Lecture will be held Tuesday 11 October at IET London in Savoy Place, London WC2. Tea will be served from 17.30, the President’s Lecture will begin at 18.00 and a Reception will follow at 19.00.

An Alternative Route to Greener Shipping

The management of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions from shipping has been widely talked about and extensively reported on over the past six months. The disappointment of COP 15 and the resulting lack of clarity has caused some frustration as well as an increased likelihood that there will be a plethora of regional and potentially costly regulations to respond to. So with this new set of challenges on the horizon perhaps now is the time to reflect on some of the alternative ways of promoting energy efficiency and greener shipping. Del Redvers and Simon Burnay of the BMT group, experts in corporate sustainability and ship performance matters…
