Kongsberg Maritime AS has signed an agreement to sell its underwater technology subsidiary company Hydroid, Inc. for $350 million to shipbuilder Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII). Saudi Arabia’s International Maritime Industries (IMI) has signed a vessel purchase agreement (VPA) with the National Shipping Company of Saudi Arabia (Bahri) and a subsequent sub-contract agreement with South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) to build one very large crude carrier (VLCC).Hyundai Heavy will transfer architectural designs and related technological know-how for the building of very large crude carriers (VLCCs) to IMI. Bahri, the world's largest owner and operator of very large crude carriers, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to build its first very large crude carrier (VLCC) at the International Maritime Industries (IMI) yard in Saudi Arabia.The agreement signed with IMI and Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), one of the partners in IMI, sees Bahri committing the new mega-shipyard its first order before the end of July 2019.Following the placing of the order, IMI will engage HHI as a sub-contractor to build the vessel in South Korea. Construction work has begun on a joint venture to build a shipyard on Saudi Arabia's eastern coast, oil rig builder Lamprell Plc said in a statement on Friday. The joint venture, International Maritime Industries (IMI), started operations after reaching agreement for a loan from the state-backed Saudi Industrial Development Fund (SIDF), the statement said. The SIDF agreed in principle last year to provide 3.75 billion riyals ($1 billion) in financing for the project. IMI is a partnership between United Arab Emirates-based Lamprell, state oil giant Saudi Aramco, National Shipping Co of Saudi Arabia (Bahri) and South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries Co.

Saudi Aramco and its partners have appointed Fathi K. Al-Saleem as chief executive of a joint venture to build a shipyard on the kingdom’s east coast, part of the Saudi Arabian government’s drive to diversify the economy beyond oil. The state-owned oil giant said in a statement on Friday that International Maritime Industries (IMI) had been officially launched in partnership with National Shipping Co of Saudi Arabia (Bahri), engineering firm Lamprell Plc, and South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries Co.

Norway’s IMS group AS announced it has signed a purchase agreement with the OceanSaver Trustee to acquire the ballast water treatment system manufacturer’s intellectual property, certificates and assets following its bankruptcy filed on September 13, 2017. OceanSaver had sold approximately 200 ballast water treatment systems and was among the first suppliers to be approved by IMO, to successfully complete the stringent test regime by the U.S. Coast Guard and to obtain a USCG type approval in December 2016. As negotiations begin on the UK's departure from the European Union, David Dingle CBE, Chairman of Maritime UK said: "These are the most critical set of negotiations in a lifetime. “Above all, we need free trade with Europe as well as the rest of the world, enabling our sector to perform its unique and fundamental role in facilitating UK global trade. “A cross-party agreement on Brexit would be a powerful tool to demonstrate a united front in the negotiations. Negotiating such an agreement would mean that the final deal had the widespread support of the British people, and more likely be signed off by Parliament. Our negotiating partners would therefore take the negotiations more seriously, providing certainty and stability, allowing industry to get on with its job.

Ship operators must combine vigilance, structure and care with the new SOLAS X1-1/7 - MSC.1/Circ.1477 & MSC.1/Circ.1485 regulations to safeguard crews from the dangers of gas when entering enclosed spaces, warns Wilhelmsen Ships Service (WSS), stressing that just supplying vessels with one portable four-gas detection unit, as stipulated by the IMO, simply isn’t sufficient. The new regulation, coming into force on July 1, 2016, requires all ships engaged in international voyages to have at least one unit capable of detecting the presence of oxygen, flammable gases or vapors, carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulfide. This is an important step forward, acknowledges WSS, global provider of maritime products and services, but not the end of the road when it comes to safety.

The Finnish government's innovation investment arm, Tekes, said that it is making a multi-year commitment to funding collaborative research and development of autonomous, unmanned ships to ply the world’s oceans in the not-so-distant future. Tekes said in a statement that this research area is a priority for the Finnish government and would contribute to the nation's competitiveness. "Digitalization has a strong role in the development of the competitiveness of the Finnish maritime cluster. Autonomous maritime ecosystem is a concrete action of Finnish digitalization strategy and Finnish Marine Industries envisioning," says the statement.
