U.S. Navy hospital ship USNS Comfort (T-AH 20) departed Norfolk, Va. The Vindskip, designed by Lade AS, comes to rescue and bring wind power back into action. It uses a hull designed to act as a so-called airfoil, or giant sail. Futuristic concepts for containerships powered by windmill-powered propellers have been in vogue for some time, especially after the studies revealed that shipping accounts for around 3% of global CO2 emissions. A Norwegian engineer has designed a radical new cargo ship with a hull so large it acts as the sails of old. Named Vindskip, the hull on the concept would act as a so-called giant airfoil to harness power from the wind and lift and propel the ship forward, while onboard software would constantly monitor weather forecasts to choose the best course possible.

On a journey that would take more than five weeks, six 32-foot transportable security boats (TPSBs), two pick-up trucks, six boat trailers, and 15 five-ton storage containers traveled more than 5,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean from Everett, Washington to Pohang, South Korea. Coast Guard Port Security Units 311, 312 and 313 mobilized 80 tons of gear and more than 100 personnel to participate in one of the largest, international military exercises on the Korean peninsula, Combined Joint Logistics Over the Shore Exercise (CJLOTS). CJLOTS is an annual exercise comprised of more than 1,200 U.S.

Sailors aboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) are participating in shipwide exercises beginning March 20, which are aimed at returning the ship and its crew to operational status following an extended stay at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. General Quarters (GQ), engineering, crash and salvage, man overboard, sighting team, security, and other drills are being conducted during simulated underway periods in which the crew operate on an at sea schedule. “The fact that we’re done with most of the work we had to do in the yards means we can shift our focus now to training,” said Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) 1st Class (AW) Billy Ramirez, leading petty officer of Air Department’s crash and salvage team.

Hornblower Marine Services will be responsible for the complete start-up and operating infrastructure, in addition to the daily operations of Bahamas Fast Ferry Service Limited. This new ferry service will provide high-speed transportation between Nassau, Harbor Island, Eleuthera and other destinations. The 114 ft. (35 m) Solent Class, high-speed catamaran, designed by FBM Marine and built by Pequot River Shipworks, will be used to transport visitors, as well as Bahamian residents (177 total) at speeds of 35-40 knots. Hornblower has entered into yet another venture, this time with Virginia-based MetroMarine Holdings for a passenger ferry service between downtown Hampton and downtown Norfolk.

Hornblower Marines Services, a shareholder in Bahamas Fast Ferries Service Limited, has established a ferry to run between Nassau and Harbor Island for high-speed visitor/resident transportation. The 115 ft. Solent class high speed catamaran was designed by FBM Marine Ltd and built by Pequot River Shipworks, a subsidiary of Connecticut-based Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation. With Hornblower overseeing the day-to-day operations and infrastructure of this service, the 35 knot vessel will be lauched this June and will hold 177 passengers with a travel time of one hour and 40 minutes between each port.

Litton Marine Systems has received an order to supply an AMIRIS infrared imaging system and other electronics for a new catamaran passenger ferry under construction at Pequot River Shipworks. Under the contract, Litton is providing a C. Plath Navigat X MK 1 gyrocompass, Navipilot HSC autopilot, in addition to the AMIRIS infrared imaging system for the new 147.6-ft. 300-passenger TriCat ferry being built for Catalina Cruises. This is the second Pequot vessel to be fitted with the AMIRIS infrared imaging system. Since its initial introduction in 1997, the AMIRIS product has been upgraded with options such as an integrated CCD camera, providing a variable thermal image overlay, dual axis stabilization and a laser range finder. AMIRIS is available with either a monochrome or color display.

The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), located in Kings Point, N.Y., strives to produce graduates who have the expertise, as well as the understanding of not only how a ship works, but what it takes to operate and build a ship.
