MOD of Norway signed an agreement to take part in a development project to extend the range and features of the STADT Stealth Naval Electric Propulsion.Due to increased use of electric and electronic weapon-systems, navies globally show increased interest for electric propulsion to power future navy vessels. Overall goals include minimizing carbon footprint, lowering power consumption with the use of new low emission power sources, while also increasing operational range and defense capabilities by stealth operations.

Marine technology provider Høglund Marine Solutions announced it has taken a two-thirds stake in Vindskip AS, a company developing a wind- and liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered vessel concept.Vindskip (which translates to ‘wind ship’ in English) is a vessel design project for a car/truck carrier that combines wind and gas power to achieve the lowest possible emissions in its market segment.With a majority share in Vindskip AS, Høglund will bring the company’s experience and expertise from providing LNG and automation solutions to the Vindskip project.

Germany is located on the divide between the South flowing Danube system and the north flowing Mainz River which is a tributary of the Rhine. Since 1992 the remarkable Rhine-Mainz-Danube canal and locks have connected the two systems allowing cargos to travel from the North Sea to the Mediterranean via the Black Sea. This allows inland river cargo vessels access to thousands of kilometers or inland waters. Even if a boat lays up at night, it can still rack up a lot of hours on its engine.As a result, repowers are a necessary but important decision for vessel owners.

Caribbean shipyard Grand Bahama Shipyard (GBS) said it has completed work on 30 commercial vessels within first half of 2017, predominantly comprised of companies returning to the yard with repeat business including tankers, bulk carriers, containerships, tugs, dive support vessels and drilling support vessels. The Caribbean shipyard Grand Bahama Shipyard Limited (GBSL) worked on 49 commercial vessels and 20 cruise ships throughout 2016, with scope of works ranging from major steel fabrication and repairs, to engine and technical systems overhauls, hull treatment and tank cleanings. And looking to 2017 and beyond, the yard reports it has a healthy order book, with docking periods secured as far ahead as three years. VShips USA brought two bulk carriers, CSL Acadian and CSL Argosy, to GBSL to do tank cleaning on both vessels. CSL Acadian also received extensive pipe work.

Shanghai's Zhonggu Shipping may buy 3,398-TEU Stadt Aachen, that was up for sale for US$7.1 million, say local media reports. Zhonggu Shipping earlier stated that it plans to acquire a handful of vessels this year, all of which will start operations between June and August. The Chinese company announced in the middle of March that it has acquired two containerships from Singapore and Germany. Additionally, last month the company signed a shipbuilding contract with CSSC-affiliated Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard for the construction of a 2,500-TEU ship. Xia Guoqing, General Manager, Zhang Jiangang, vice general manager of Zhonggu Shipping, and Dai Jiming, president of Changhong International Shipyard, attended the contact signing ceremony.

With three species of migrating cod to fish and new commercial species arriving as oceans warm, Norway is a fisheries Valhalla. Yet, recent boat sales suggest the Scandinavian country’s role is changing. Vessel orders and rules in Norway are propping up yards and designers on Europe’s fringes. Medium-sized hull orders for Romanian, Russian and Turkish boat builders are new, while large vessel orders for Denmark or Spain continue apace. Unconventional Icelandic designs, too, are gaining ground here as catches and profits soar.

Crowley Delivers Six New Turbine Blades to Costa Rican Wind Mill Farm. Crowley Maritime Corporation's liner services group recently shipped six oversized wind turbine blades from Port Everglades, Fla., to Limon, Costa Rica. The blades, which weighed two-and-a-half tons each and were 72 feet long, were lifted on board the Crowley ship Stadt Emden, using gantry cranes, slings and hooks, and transported to Costa Rica in time to meet the shipper's tight deadline. Gunnar H. Hide has been appointed as the new managing director of Ulstein Power & Control. Hide has a background from the maritime industry and has among others, worked as a manager in Acel, ABB, Stadt Automation, and IKM Group. Hide said that had his first job with Ulstein in 1980, at Ulstein Smevik in Herøy, where he was for three years and took his mechanical certificate. Hide is a graduate mechanical engineer from Horten Engineering School.

STADT AS has a gained a foothold in both the offshore and fishing fleet with a new diesel electric propulsion system. The company is located in Gjerdsvika at the Northwest coast of Norway, and has patented a new solution based on Sinus-technology. “This is sustainable technology, and we are definitely on track,” says Hallvard Slettevoll, president of STADT AS. For more than seven years the company has worked to develop a diesel-electric propulsion system with the goal of reducing the load on the environment and improving the operating economy of ships.

On Feb. 5, Port Everglades and SeaFreight Line celebrated the 100th voyage of the MV Stadt Rendsburg from the South Florida seaport. Built in 2004, the 1,100-TEU containerized cargo vessel has spent its entire working career home-ported at Port Everglades and sailing every three weeks to Jamaica, Aruba, Curacao, Bonaire, Venezuela, Panama, Trinidad and Jacksonville, Fla. “We congratulate SeaFreight on the MV Stadt Rendsburg’s 100th voyage to Port Everglades and a successful business model that generated nearly 75,000 TEUs at Port Everglades this past year,” said Port Director Phil Allen.

Boarding team members from Coast Guard Station Yankeetown stopped four unsafe passenger vessels operating on the Crystal River, Fla., and in the vicinity of Homosassa, Fla., Dec. 29, through Dec. 31, 2008. During random safety boardings, crewmembers discovered two commercial vessels operated by Stadt Aquatic Adventures operating with more than their maximum allowable passengers. Additionally, Yankeetown crews discovered that the captain of the second vessel failed to properly report a marine casualty involving one of its main engines. The Coast Guard terminated both voyages for the safety infractions and will seek civil penalties against Stadt Aquatic Adventures. The Coast Guard will also pursue action to suspend the captains’ licenses for failing to comply with proper safety procedures.

The Coast Guard's first Legend-class National Security Cutter, Bertholf, returned to its homeport here Sunday marking the completion of the cutter's first operational patrol. Bertholf's crew conducted a shakedown of the ship's systems and carried out flight operations, small-boat operations and weapons testing. A primary goal of the patrol was to complete flight tests – known as dynamic interface testing – to determine the limits of wind and sea conditions in which a helicopter can land safely upon Bertholf's flight deck.

Norcontrol IT has won the contract to upgrade the Vessel Traffic Management and Information System (VTMIS) for the Draugen Offshore Oil Platform in the North Sea. The contract also includes a five-year Long Term System Support Program (LT-SSP). The Draugen Platform is owned and operated by A/S Norske Shell and currently uses a Norcontrol IT VOC 90 system. This system will be replaced with the latest VTMIS 5060, which can be upgraded to communicate with other VTS systems in the North Sea. The VTMIS 5060 has the built in capability to meet future government requirements regarding communication between land and offshore platforms. Draugen Offshore Oil Platform has been in operation since 1993 and has an average production of 220,000 barrels of oil per day.

Italia Marittima SpA (ITS) is set to upgrade its Mediterranean – U.S. East Coast (MUS) service in a two-stage process that will see larger and faster ships serving the trade. Direct calls will be offered in Turkey while two Taranto calls will provide a connection with Italia’s Med feeder network. Six vessels, each with a capacity of approximately 2,500 TEU, will replace the present 1,800 TEU vessel fleet. Italia will provide two ships, Ital Oceano and Stadt Wismar, while partners CMA CGM and Gold Star Line are supplying the other four vessels. August will see the addition to the MUS schedule of the Italian hub port of Taranto while Barcelona will replace Valencia as the service’s Spanish call.
