The Liberian Registry said it has augmented its leadership team to help keep pace with nearly 12% over the last 12 months. The Liberian International Ship and Corporate Registry (LISCR) has added to its ranks Thomas Klenum as Senior Vice President of Maritime Operations, and Reynaldo Garibaldi as Senior Vice President of Maritime Operations and South America.Klenum, based at the Registry’s headquarters, is in charge of the Regulations and Standards, Investigations, and Fleet Security and Certifications Divisions.

Grand Bahama Shipyard and L&R Midland (UK) Ltd have signed an exclusive agency agreement covering the U.K. markets effective June 1, 2017. Caribbean shipyard Grand Bahama Shipyard (GBS) has engaged L&R Midland (UK) as its representative in the U.K. in what is expected to be an increasingly busy period due to approaching new International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations that will require ballast water treatment systems (BWTS) and exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCS) retrofits.

ABS reports that it has centralized its global Marine strategic planning, client development, and product and service offerings to deliver enhanced classification services and joint technical projects. Effective Feb. 15, 2016, Dr. Kirsi Tikka is promoted to the new role of Executive Vice President – Global Marine. She will continue to be based in London. “An industry-recognized and respected expert, Kirsi brings tremendous experience and insight to deliver improved coordination, consistency and responsiveness to our members and clients,” sadi ABS Chairman, President and CEO Christopher J. The running year turned out as a tough year in shipping. Despite a raft of technical projects for the company, the stinging tale of the low oil price created a steep downturn in the global offshore industry as well as leaving many projects deferred or cancelled. As a result SAL concludes 2015 with significant project references, but also with the marks of the general challenges in the shipping industry. SAL foresees a continued challenged mar-ket in 2016 and predicts project carriers will have to toughen up to be capable of withstanding the fights that will inevitably come. Alfa Laval said its PureSOx exhaust gas cleaning system is gaining ground in the cruise ship market. Following a lengthy selection and qualification process, four PureSOx scrubbers have been ordered by Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCL). Three of these will be PureSOx 2.0 systems as presented at SMM 2014, while the fourth will be the first test inline version of PureSOx. Alfa Laval’s deliveries to RCL will extend over the summer of 2015. The PureSOx systems will be installed as retrofits aboard four Royal Caribbean International ships: three of the Freedom Class and one of the Voyager Class.

As part of a $2.3 billion newbuilding program, United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) has reached an agreement with Jotun for the provision of antifouling coatings for 11 new container vessels. The agreement marks the first time the companies have worked together on marine antifouling hull coatings. Of the 11 vessels to be coated with Jotun's premium antifouling range, eight are 14,500 TEU and three are 18,800 TEU capacity vessels. Manager and operator of the first semi-automated terminal in the Middle East, Khalifa Port Container Terminal, says it has appointed Mr. Mohamed Al Afeefi as Technical Director. Mr. Al Afeefi, who has been working in the oil & gas, aviation and energy intensive industries for the past 15 years, will be a key member of the corporate management team, with overall responsibility for overseeing technical, facility and workshop activities at ADT’s Khalifa Port Container Terminal. The marine industry watched as the United States’ largest floating drydock, the Vigorous, was delivered to its final home at Vigor Industrial’s Portland shipyard on the Willamette River in August. W&O is one of the partners that supported Vigor in this $40 million dollar project, by providing an actuated valve solution for the ballast system of the drydock. From design specification through initial commissioning, the W&O team has provided technical and product expertise for the Vigorous ballast system, utilizing SPACE Gate Valves, EIM Electric Actuators, reach rods and deck stands.

Sakhalin Energy and Sovcomflot (SCF) inform they have agreed to extend their co-operation having signed a number of agreements for construction and long-term operation of support vessels for the Sakhalin-2 project. SCF explain that the vessels will be used as year-round personnel carriers and also as supply vessela for offshore platforms in the Sea of Okhotsk. In case of emergency, they will be deployed for personnel evacuation and oil spill response. It is intended that Russian shipbuilders will play an active role in the construction of the new vessels: SCF has already signed a shipbuilding contract with Arctech (a joint venture between OAO United Shipbuilding Corporation and STX Finland) and structural components for the vessels will be produced in Russia at Vyborg Shipyard.
