Health Monitoring System Keeps an Eye on the Fleet
When you’re out at sea, the last thing you need is a major breakdown. In such a case, it would mean being towed back to dry dock for expensive repairs – and that’s something that hard-pressed shipping companies can do without. One way around this is to keep a constant watch over onboard assets condition, and SKF has helped one shipping customer to do this – introducing condition monitoring to its ship, with plans to extend the service to other vessels in the fleet.

Sept. 1, 2008, the amphibious command ship USS Mount Whitney (LCC/JCC 20) departed Souda harbor following a routine port visit. Mount Whitney is homeported in Gaeta, Italy, where she received humanitarian aid supplies destined for the Republic of Georgia. The coastal patrol craft USS Chinook (PC 9) conducts maritime security operations in the near the Iraqi Khawr Al Amaya oil terminal (KAAOT). Chinook is part of Combined Task Force (CTF) 158, which is specifically responsible for ensuring the security of 's KAAOT and Al Basra oil terminals in support of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1790. CTF-158 operates jointly with Iraqi Navy sailors and marines, trained by members of the Navy Transition Team based in nearby Umm Qasr.
