U.S.-flag Great Lakes freighters (lakers) moved 8.8 million tons of cargo in October, a decrease of 9.2 percent compared to a year ago, and 10.2 percent below the month’s five-year average, according to the Lake Carriers’ Association (LCA). October was also the sixth consecutive month in which cargos trailed the previous year. Iron ore cargos for the steel industry totaled 4.4 million tons in October, an increase of 5.3 percent compared to a year ago.

Coal shipments to power plants and steel mills fell to 1.8 million tons, a decrease of 14.3 percent.

Coal shipments to power plants and steel mills fell to 1.4 million tons, a decrease of nearly 28 percent.
March US-flag Lakes Cargoes Double from 2015
U.S.-flag Great Lakes freighters (lakers) moved 1,747,111 tons of cargo in March, more than double their total of a year ago, according to the Lake Carriers’ Association (LCA), who said the March float was also on pace with the month’s five-year average. Iron ore cargos totaled 1,362,768 tons, again more than double the volume of a year ago, while coal cargos totaled 133,155 tons, basically a repeat of a year ago.
US-flag Lakes Cargo Volumes Lowest Since 2009
U.S.-flag Great Lakes freighters (lakers) moved 87.2 million tons of cargo in 2015, a decrease of 3.3 percent compared to 2014, the Lake Carriers’ Association (LCA) said. The end-year tally is the lowest since 2009 when the U.S.-flag float totaled 66.5 million tons. According to the LCA, the total volumes or iron ore, coal and sand shipments fell in 2015, while limestone, cement and grain cargos saw overall gains. Sand shipments, meanwhile, stayed about even with 2014’s figures.

Another brutal winter again spawned heavy ice formations Lakeswide that slowed the vessels that were put into service and delayed others’ sail date. With five of the six U.S. iron ore loading ports on Lake Superior, it follows that the iron ore trade was most affected by the ice fields.

The September float was also 2.2 percent below the month’s 5-year average. Iron ore cargos for the steel industry totaled 4,351,654 tons in September, a decrease of 5.1 percent compared to a year ago.

Iron ore cargos for the steel industry in July totaled 4.3 million tons, a decrease of nearly 18 percent compared to a year ago. Coal cargos fell by almost 23 percent.

Iron ore cargos for the steel industry registered a modest increase compared to a year ago. Coal for power generation and steel production dipped 16.5 percent. Aggregate and fluxstone for the construction and steel industries rose by more than 14 percent.
U.S.-Flag Lakes Fleet Back to Work
Cleveland—The U.S.-flag Great Lakes fleet is returning to service to keep industrial America on the mend. The first vessel to get underway was the tug/barge unit DOROTHY ANN/PATHFINDER on March 5. The vessel will spend the month shuttling iron ore within Cleveland Harbor. Next to sail was the cement carrier SAMUEL DE CHAMPLAIN/INNOVATION. The tug/barge unit left its winter berth in Cleveland on March 7 and sailed to Alpena, Michigan, where it loaded cement to resupply silos in Chicago.
